There's another subtle detail here. In Episode 1, Avdol mentions that he would've melted the metal rod in midair with Magician's Red if he was attacked. Here he gives Polnareff a knife to see if he intended to attack him from behind as a test of character. He probably would've let him burn if he actually threw it.
