Not really schad. He was always going to lose and get paid likely 100 million dollars to do it.

Yeah on the one hand he got knocked out by a 40 year old retiree who hasn't KOd anyone (properly) in like a decade, on the other in all fairness he did go 10 rounds with the world's best boxer and Mayweather said he was tougher than he expected. He got paid a completely absurd amount to go through the motions of what was definitely gonna happen and didn't really embarrass himself too badly in the process.

A TKO is not a KO. Fight was called because a) he could no longer keep his hands up and b) was unsteady on his legs. But not because he was all loopy from punches. He ran out of gas and had zero energy to protect himself, which everyone predicted. That's why the ref called it with a TKO.

All said, he did far better than I thought he would. I figured he'd be running on fumes by the 6th round.

Oh yeah fair enough, he didn't get KOd at all, and he's more tired than loopy. But he was against the rope taking big punches and unable to defend himself, it's just stopping an actual KO at the point where its inevitable and pointless. Not a KO but (discounting Ortiz) still I think the first time Mayweather's finished a fight early in like a decade?

That's fair enough.

I actually thought it was an interesting fight from a technical perspective. Mayweather put on a clinic of how to approach an opponent of whom you have no knowledge or even tapes of previous bouts to study. I just wish the guy wasn't a total douche-bag (what with the wife beating and all).

I think with a couple years of serious training, McGreggor could transition into a world-class boxer, but he does have time against him. He's already in the peak performance window age-wise. A few more years and his speed and strength will start to decline.

From an entertainment perspective he should go back to mma. He is completely gimped by the boxing rule set. If you don't watch mma go back and check out some of his fights they are really fun.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali_vs._Antonio_Inoki

quote:

As soon as the opening bell rang, Inoki ran the 16-foot gap and slid at the legs of Ali, who sidestepped the attack. Inoki stayed on the ground for all but the first 14 seconds of the three-minute first round, kicking at Ali and landing one clean hit to Ali's right leg. The majority of the fight saw Inoki on his back kicking Ali's legs, occasionally connecting. By the third round, a wound had appeared on Ali's left knee.

Ali began walking around the ring, out of reach of Inoki's kicks, taunting him by shouting "Coward Inoki! Inoki no fight!". In the fourth round, Inoki, still on his back, trapped Ali in a corner and started kicking wildly at his thighs. Ali leapt up on to the ropes and tucked his legs underneath him. In round six, Ali tried to grab Inoki's left ankle as he kicked him, but Inoki wrapped his right leg around Ali's right calf and flipped him over on the canvas. He then rolled over on top of Ali's chest. While in this hold, Inoki elbowed Ali in the face, costing him three points.[4]

Ali did not throw his first punch until the seventh round. In the eighth, Ali's trainer, Angelo Dundee, demanded that Inoki tape the tips of his shoelaces, claiming that one of the eyelets came loose and was cutting Ali's legs. A wound had already opened up on his thigh. In the tenth, Ali threw his second punch, and two more in the thirteenth. He threw only six punches in total during the fight.[5]

I don't bet on sports, so I'm not clear how odds work. I know something like 95% of people bet on the underdog who was destined to lose.

Do the odds actually affect how much your return is? Like if I were to bet $100 on Mayweather, would I still just be getting $200 back? Or does it just affect bookies?

Odds affect your return, yes. So if you bet a few bucks on McGregor, you'd end up getting a bunch back. If you bet a thousand bucks on Mayweather, you'd only make a fraction in profit. There were a bunch of people who made tiny bets on McGregor because they figured it was worth tossing a few bucks with the hope of making a small windfall. On the other hand, most of the money was in larger best on Mayweather, where it was close to a sure thing to make a small profit.

I believe it was -400 Mayweather, +300 McGregor. That means that a $400 bet on Mayweather would earn $100. Alternatively, a $100 bet on McGregor would earn $300.
