Can't dome over the fort he's sieging though, but I guess he could dome up his other throne forts. I do second the bishop fish, that thing is super easy to summon and will make your life 100x easier when pushing thrones.

I have no globals up, half my mages are dead and the army that is sieging that fort got cut down from about 150 to 50 thanks to fireballs, undead remote attack(s), and a rather critical Mind Lord recently bit it. I have a 500 or so strong army on the wrong side of the world guarding one of the level three forts that I could theoretically spend all my remaining pearls astral traveling in but then I remember it took 2+ hours of scripting last turn and uggghhhhhhhh. Ermor earned this, he also managed to remote attack/assassinate Kailasa (who was the former no1) into going AI as well. I came incredibly close to taking that fort a few turns ago but army of gold and Warriors of neif didn't go off and like 500 lobos and 20 slave mages died to firestorm. Then the rest tried to storm the fort, RIP. Wolfsbane posted:Oh no you don't, not again. I was curious about something, and I figured this would be the best place to ask. Is there any reason to buy Dominions 3 if you already own Dominions 4? What about Conquest Of Elysium 4 as compared to CoE3? I already own Dom 4, but I don't own CoE 4 or 3, and I noticed all of them but CoE 4 are on sale on Steam today for pretty cheap. I was wondering if either Dom 3 or CoE 3 are worth it or if I should just ignore Dom 3 and wait to scoop up CoE 4 later.

Dom 4 pretty much completely obsoletes Dom 3 unless you find some total grogs to play with. Haven't played much of the CoE games but they're a lot less involved that the Dominions.

I made a brief effort to get into Dom3, but failed. I think partly because my first shot at MP was subbing into a late game and I just got overwhelmed and lost interest. But I've been reading a few LPs recently and since I've owned dom4 on steam for the last 3 years or something I think it's time I made another shot at it. Are there any newbie games in the pipeline at the moment? Edit: also newbie games are usually EA, is that right? So I can experiment a bit in SP.

I just got Dom4 (Before the sale :Minus:) and I decided to play a random fuckoff game as MA Ermor because I just wanted to mess around with freespawn undead and try summon-and-freespawn-sacred spam. It was alright, but I think my view of Ermor will always be coloured by the fact that this guy showed up on turn 3, I made him my prophet, and I suddenly had Dusk Elders on turn 4. I'll never again have my super awesome Wraith Knight literally show up and basically conquer the whole northlands for me. I never finished that game, because I'd made some mistakes setting it up, and it was my first game. For one, I decided to go 'mo money' as a lark and because I figured I'd need the influx early to be able to bank cash and build my fortresses e'rywhere for my Knights of the Unholy Sepulchre. This didn't end up doing that much for me in the end, as my Dominion just killed everyone and the income from a new province was gone in like three turns anyway, and it made it so my enemies had better income throughout to combat my freespawn (If I'd gotten there) midgame. I did manage to roll over a neighbour, and my KotUS and Lictors were able to murder at least one awake pretender, in their own Dominion, during a castle siege. But I'd also not increased sites from 40%, so my gem income was *trash*. The only gem income I had in Death was Capital 15, and a 2 death site. I had decent other income, though, but I should have increased the sites anyway to balance out. Secondly was my pretender design. I don't remember the scales offhand, but I remember taking good luck and magic, tanking most everything else, and Dom 10. The paths were... I hadn't really done research for magic, just gone on the gut of "Earth is good for forging, need forging for my undead commanders. 4 is good, and Re-inv is good for stuff too everyone always takes reinv on SC's and if I have it as a bless I'm ahead". Looking back, fire/death would have been better than that. Possibly take a different chassis for fire 4/earth 2/death 9, instead, so I can earth boots my pretender into hammers, fire has some good summons and I already have minor fire access so higher fire on pretender means fireboosters for my fire 1-2 Dusk Elders without needing gems or a phoenix fire (I think? The fireboosting magic combat spell). But seriously, that hero showing up on turn 3 changed the entire strategy I would have had. Gave me access to archbishops and dusk elders a good 10 turns before my pretender (which was until turn it work up, or my hero/dusk elders it summoned, the only Death 3 or above mage I had), which got my Lictor and KotUS gangs going a lot faster. I played loose with my Archbishops, loading up three of them with a bunch of Lictors, as many Knights as I had, and 80-100 varied Ermor Legionnaire longdead. It was brutally effective against the AI. I actually did have a lot of fun with that game until the micro annoyed me. The freespawn management is not for me, but I love every other aspect of the nation. Gimme something like MA Ermor without that poo poo and it'll be my baby. I am surprised at how much I actually learned from a really terrible set up (the like 500 province map, 5 AIs, Mo'Money everything except sites) that was poo poo through and through. My second real game I decided to run with the Ulm example they have in the manual. MA Ulm, Allfather chassis, pretty standard. Game begins, capital is on a little peninsula with only one land territory to the rest of the continent. Oh well, chokepoint cap circle but not great for income. AND it's a throne, but level 2 and not that heavily defended (Put Indies at 4 for this game.) My pretender wakes up, I get him to begin site searching. Gets to the throne province next to my cap, searches, I keep going. Next turn he has a hit, I'm like "Ehnnnn death site that gives illness thats poo poo everything I have has to funnel through there gently caress" and move my god one province south. Next turn I look at my god again and he has six afflictions, including one that halves all his paths, on turn 13. I ragequit but I still have the save. I started a fresh game with that exact same Ulm setup, found a throne in a neighbouring, Cap circle province (but not a bottleneck thank god). It's a throne that causes illness. I noped an entire circle around it and I only conquered the province like on turn 20, after I'd already eaten a neighbour and was working on two more. No one's claimed the throne yet, because I'm not risking anything that can cap thrones in that province until it's like a summon or something. loving Dominions.

Wait, what? I thought they had specifically said there will never be a D5 because the code is so convoluted they don't want to touch it again? This isn't a complete rewrite into a sensible code base is it?

The UI seems mostly the same but it's got real time combat instead of turn based so that indicates a big change to the code. The new bless purchase system looks really good as well.

DOMINIONS FIVE ANNOUNCEMENT http://jaffa.illwinter.com/dom5/ Highlights: - Real time combat instead of turn based combat, with a new casting time mechanic. Big spells take a couple of turns to fire instead of being instant, and summoning is slower than regular magic. - New movement system that can allow you to move through your provinces and attack on the same turn provided you can move far enough. - New bless system based on points - no more fixed +8hp / regen for N9, instead you get to mix and match a much wider pool. Some blesses are "incarnate", meaning if your god isn't awake yet, or is dead, they won't take effect. - Slightly changed recruitment: Points-based instead of the old 1-per turn or StR system - high level forts provide up to 3, which is normally 3 mundane commanders, a mage and a commander, or 3/4 of the recruitment time of a formerly StR mage (meaning one StR and one regular mage out every two turns). - New nations like these guys!

It looks like they might've deleted and rewritten the whole base yeah what with these changes to combat recruitment movement etc idk if I'll pick dom4 back up again but I doubt I'll be able to resist trying this new thing in mp

Looks like the same graphical base from the screenshots, seems like a lot of mechanical changes though. Could be a rewrite from scratch for the back end. Like they said.

you can queue research what the heck
|
# ? Sep 11, 2017 11:01 |
Yeah you can't research in parallel anymore but it is a better system than getting vexed with sliders (if you accidentally leave the queue unfilled it will do conjuration research by the way, the RP doesn't just vanish)

It's neat that in mid/late, province names are visible from an extra step away. Early game capital hunts would be scarier.

Perhaps the biggest change is the change to recruitment. It seems Illwinter didn’t like how everyone ignored the new fort options, and always built the cheapest ones, so now bigger forts give more commander recruitment points. Finally a reason to build them. Wait, I just thought another big change. At first the change to real time battles seemed nice (shorter big battles) and otherwise not that important. But tactically there is an important difference: Before people were 'exploiting' the fact that a single turn doesn't happen at the same time like in a WEGO system, inside a single turn there was a order between the units, and people used that to chain up spells in the correct order, to be able to launch a big spell at the end of turn 1 instead of turn 3, despite needing other spells done by his mage companions. Not anymore.

I wonder if the custom pretender spell system can extend to rituals. And is it tied to chassis or to paths? I've often thought that the human pretenders should have custom summons, since they're basing their claim to godhood on their skills rather than raw power.

Because I know there are a pair of beta testers here... Can we have a short video of a real time battle? I want to watch to understand how it works. I suppose they kind of... take their turns moving all at the same time, more than looking like a true real time battle (like a Total War game).
