Micah's started producing Medium Fleece. The main differences from the small version are that it gives a slightly larger defense bonus when used to upgrade & you only need one to make a yarn ball instead of three. Exciting!

Raven, why are you in my house so early in the morning? Why are you even in my house at all? This is private property! And this is totally different from when I barge into everyone elses' house uninvited!

What?
Never mind...

That's not an answer!

Better see what ninja mom wants. Hopefully Raven has fun creeping in Link's house while we're off doing errands.

Well, it's a little silly, but I was hoping you could prepare a dish for me.
A dish?
I usually ask Blaise to prepare meals for us, but he's been awfully busy lately. I think he needs a break.
Sure. I don't mind lending a hand.
Thank you so much. The tricky part is that I need a dish that both of my girls will love.
Gotcha. So I need to cook one dish that matches both of their tastes.
That's right. I wish I could be more specific, but I'm all out of ideas. Maybe you can get some inspiration by talking to them.

Now this is one you can probably figure out from random dialogue, but I'm going to do this the 'right' way anyway.

I swing by Yue since she's in town and I'm in the inn, and holy ow that's one expensive squid.

Oh! You chose poorly.
No, no, no! I meant the opposite!
Oh. Is that how it is? Well, it looks like you chose wisely, then.

Link: Grandmaster at shooting himself in the foot.

>Normal girls

Oh. That's too good.
Wait? So you didn't want me to answer in opposite-speak?
Why would you think that?! It's not like the question was confusing or anything!

It's time for some answers, Pia.

Baths!
Uh...That's not exactly what I meant.

>What does Sakuya like?

Baths! And she likes eating sashimi in the bath! Especially tasty, tasty squid sashimi!

>What do I like?

Baths! No question about it!
N-Now that I think about it...

To be fair to Pia, baths are pretty good in this game.

Nations have fought WARS over potatoes? ...cool!

This message brought to you by the national potato council of whatever country this is.

What? What do I like? I looooove sashimi!

>What does Pia like?

Pia likes any kind of squid. She's a real fanatic for it!

So yes, the obvious solution here is making squid sashimi. The squid part was easy to figure out without anyone telling us, and Sakuya likes going on about Sashimi during fishing contests, but this dialogue's here just in case you're a weird recluse who only interacts with townspeople during quests.

>What do I like?

Huh? Did you hit your head and lose your memory again?

Or if you hit your head and forgot. :v:

Thankfully Squid are easy to catch in town any time of year.

Shino has a bit more to say if we talk to her before handing over the sashimi.

Yes, thank you for doing this.

>Sofia and Evelyn

Close. As in not even.

>Wells and Marjorie

Link, how old do you think I am?
I-I'm sorry.

Quick, hand over the sashimi before she murders us!

You really must understand both of my girls well.
You think so?
Well, here's your reward. And thanks again.
Any time!

Ooo. Greenifier increases the level of seeds a crop produces from using the sickle/randomly getting a seed drop on harvest. And higher levels mean more money & better dishes, so that's a Very Good Thing.

Carmen gets some sashimi from the not-squid I fished up, and...

Since you gave me this, I need to tell you something!
I love Seafood Doria only slightly less than I love my brother. There, I said it! So, keep that in mind next time!

:yikes:

One thing I've noticed in bachelorette chat is that nobody really brings up Shara, for good or for ill.

I'm proud of you all, but I do feel obligated to do her quests still. Besides, this one leads to Monica actually being a character instead of a "I hate you, I'm gonna bite you!" dispenser.

It's about Monica...I'm sure you've noticed, but she's very shy around people. That's why she's always talking about biting them. That might be okay now, but I'm worried that she won't grow out of it. So I was hoping that you might be able to give me some advice.

In any other game, that wouldn't be a serious long term worry. In RF3, Shara has every reason to be concerned that Monica will become "that villager with the biting gimmick".

Hmmm. That's a tough one...what's something that Monica likes?
Something she likes? Well, she likes anything that has to do with accessories.
Hm...I can't see how that'll help us.

Oh, wait...
Did you think of something else?
She had a favorite fairytale when she was younger.
Really? What was it?
Well, it was called "The Rose Prince" One day, a handsome prince saw a very beautiful girl in the forest. He could see that she was terribly lost, and wanted to help. But he didn't want her to see him. She would recognize him as the prince, and fall all over him just like all the other girls in the kingdom. He had a 100-rose bouquet with him, though. It was a gift that he was supposed to give to a princess he'd been arranged to marry. So the prince took his bouquet apart rose by rose and left a trail of roses for the girl to follow to safety. But the girl was faster than the prince expected. She caught him as he was laying down the last rose at the end of the forest. She loved him, but not just because he was a prince. She loved him for the kindness of his gesture. And the prince knew he'd found his princess.

Although now she's too shy to read it anymore.
Heh. That's cute.
That's it! Link! Don't you think that Monica might have an easy time talking to "The Rose Prince"?
Uh, I guess so?
He's someone who she's always admired. I'm sure "The Rose Prince" could open up her heart!
But how can she talk to a character from a fairytale?
Isn't it obvious? You'll become him!
Huh?! I-I'm supposed to become "The Rose Prince"?!
You said that you would help, didn't you?
I did, but...
It's fine if you can't...
...L-Let's do it! Anything if it'll help her stop biting me!
That's the spirit! I'll go talk to her in a little bit. I'll have her send you a letter soon.
Okay. I'll check my mailbox.
Link...
Yes?
I really hope you can help Monica.
I'm "The Rose Prince"! She's in good hands.
Tee-hee. Thank you very much, Rose Prince.

Well this sounds insanely adorable, even if Link leaned a bit too hard on the "wait, can you spell out the obvious thing we'll do " and "I dunno if I want to do the quest I accepted..." bits.

But since today's mailbox quest is spoken for, it'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Most of the day is spent fishing instead. Summer has a good variety of fish, including that insanely pricey squid Yui was selling.

I also do a bit of wood chopping and show off the axe charge. Link does an insane jump that somehow chops a row of three things at once. It's not super useful compared to later ones that do entire squares, but it'll do for now.

Wait, I never said anything CLOSE to that!
Will! Get back here, you idiot! Uh, Will must have accidentally gotten into the wine supply! He's clearly talking crazy!
Y-Yeah, that must be it!

That's nice and all, but shut up while I shove these mugs of hot chocolate in your face.

Kuruna loves cooked chocolate dishes(regular old bars of chocolates are just a liked item instead of a loved one), and Hot Chocolate is the easiest one to make en masse. Put one chocolate in the pot. Done. That's definitely how hot chocolate works.

New day, time to do Monica's quest.

And to remember Pia's birthday. She gets a squid sashimi.

I can't believe I get to eat Squid on my birthday. How ex-squid-zit!

Yes, the game actually highlighted 'ex-squid-zit'.

She's waiting for you in the plaza. Please hand her this 100-Rose Bouquet
Wow. We're really going for authenticity, huh?
How do you expect to play the part of the prince without it?
Ha ha...
I'm leaving Monica in your hands.

Music: Contest

I'm only here because Shara begged me. Don't embarrass me! RRRAAAARRRR! *BITE!*
Ow, hey! Calm down, Monica! I thought we could spend some time together today.
What are you talking about?! Quit being weird or I'll bite you again!
I gave you those roses because it's only for today, but I'll be your Rose Prince. So...Please calm down, Princess Monica.

W-What?!
Wherever you want to go, I'll be there to make sure you get back safely.

I wanna go to Vale:Icy Rosebush.
Very well. Let us depart, Princess Monica.
S-Stop calling me princess!

For some weird reason the literal child isn't any good in combat. You actually can drag her along as a party member outside this quest, but I'm not sure why you'd want to.

Music: Vale River

I can see my breath!

Monica.
What is it?
Would you like to go anywhere else?
Really?!
Yeah, you'll be safe with me.
Yay! Yeah!
Well, let's go to Oddward: Rainbow Falls next.
Okay!

Look! Oh...
Yeah. It's beautiful, isn't it?
...
Hm? What's the matter?
It's nothing! Let's move on!!
??
Hurry!
Okay. Let's go to...Privera: Flower Field.
Okay!

On the way over...

I don't have the power to grant you that. What name were you thinking of?
Well, I was going to name it Daria's Rainbow Garden!
Please don't make it your own.

I think Daria might have a heart attack if we took her to the rainbow screen in Oddward Valley.

I help her take care of the flowers.
Really? You do a great job.

Rarr!
Ah! Hey! L-Let's keep going!
We should go to Sol Terrano: Star Dunes. I want to wait until 7PM to go. Is that okay with you, Monica?
I need to tell Shara if I'm gonna be late.
Oh, don't worry. She said I'm watching out for you today.
Really? Then it's OK!
Yeah! Let's go!

We have to wait because the whole draw of the desert area is the nighttime stars.

While wasting time, I remember there's a few villagers whose beds I haven't tried to sleep in yet. Karina is less than amused.

I also power up my shiny new sword.

And engage in some thrilling soil inspection action. :woop:

I'm not super sure about the soil mechanics in RF3, but if it's anything like RF4 then one of the penalities for poor soil is slower-growing crops. Which is bad, since we need them to fuel the cooking/gifting/crop levelling machine.

Monica doesn't automatically notify you when it's past 7, but she'll whine about it if you talk to her.

Look at all the stars!

Yes! It's wonderful!
Good. Monica, can I ask you something?
What is it?
Why don't you let people talk to you?
...
You don't have to answer if you don't want to. I just thought you might want to talk about it.
It's just...I...When people talk to me, I get really nervous. And then I get mad at them for making me nervous and uncomfortable! And then I bite them!
I see.
I...I know I shouldn't do that.
Well, when you explain it like that, maybe it's not so bad.
Huh...?
Oh, I mean, you definitely shouldn't bite people. But it's good to hear that you know it's wrong.
As long as you try to overcome your fear of talking to people, I know you'll get there eventually.
...You really are like the Rose Prince!
Y-You think so?
Yes. I think I can talk to you.
Thanks. Well, shall I walk you home?
Okay!

Yes! Very much!
I'm glad.
Hey, Link...
What?

Monica races in for the kiss. Kids, amirite?

!!!
See ya.

The real reward is that Monica will give actual dialogue now instead of repeatedly saying how much she hates us.

Next is Carmen, who has apparently confused the bulletin board with OKCupid.

Okay. Yeah, I don't have anything to do.
I see. Then let's go on a date!
What?! Date?! You're pretty direct, Carmen.

Link, do you just not read these requests before accepting them?

Well, the magazine I always read had a feature. Said that mountain stream fishing is all the rage! So let's go! It'll be fun.
Oh, you just want me to go fishing. My heart skipped a beat for a second.
Ha ha. But I can't tell Carlos about it. So it's our secret! Well, off we go! Let's go to Oddward: Archway!

Nothing weird about going on a fishing non-date at 8pm. Nope.

Her weapon is a fishing pole. Yes, you can actually use fishing poles as weapons.

Music: Pinch

Hey, you two! Taking a trip alone, you got some guts.
Ah, Carlos! You were listening?
I'll never let you date as long as I live! You can fish at our resort!
Aw...

Getting a little creepy there, bro.

Music: Home 2

Alright...!

It's a good size.
Wow, Carmen. You're good at this.
I know! I'm lucky today.
I'm having no luck. It brings me down.
Don't worry. Just fishing with you is fun for me.
Yeah, me too. I was being selfish.
Don't worry. You'll catch something. It's all you can fish.
Okay. I'll be patient.

Indeterminate amount of time later...

Let's eat. I'm getting hungry. Made by me. Here! Go ahead.
Oh, just a minute. I'll put the fishing rod down.
Don't worry. Now say 'ah'.
Ahhh. (Yum.)
Hmm...it's good.
Heh heh. I'm glad I woke up early and made it! It was hard to prepare without making noise!

Yes, Link is in fact the densest motherfucker on the planet.

Huh? Is that a fish biting?
Oh! You got one! Pull it up!
O-Okay! It's pretty big. The rod might break...
Don't force it! I'll help you!

That was a strong fish. I wonder if it was the King Fish.
You think so?! Wow! The King Fish was just on our line! That's amazing!!!
Oh! Ouch!
Are you OK?
I'll be fine! I twisted my ankle. It kinda hurts. Heh heh.
Don't worry. Use my shoulder.

What's wrong, Carmen? Are you hurt? What did you do to her? You better answer me!
I'm sorry, Carlos. I think Carmen got hurt because of me.
No, stop! I was helping him catch a large fish. Then the line.broke, and I fell to the ground! You're so hot-headed!
...! Sorry about that. I get crazy about my little sister, you know? You were helping her and I yelled at you. Sorry.
Carlos.
Silly guy...I'm glad you're worried, but you need to trust us. *mumble mumble*
...Let's go home now. Today was fun. Thanks.
I had fun too. Take care of your foot.
...

Our prize is absolutely nothing! :toot:

It appears that our comrades in the glorious Univir settlement wish to show us the glory of the also glorious desert. Let's see it for ourselves!

That's right. You need to see the beauty of the desert.
Uh, okay. I'm not sure there's much to see, but it might be nice to check out.
Ah. You have seen, but you have not observed. I'll show you the majesty of Sol Terrano:Star Dunes. The skies are clear in the afternoon, and it's a perfect place to go stargazing.

We were there literally last update!

That's too bad. I was hoping to show you something new.
Uh, but it might be, like, different with you there!
Do you really think so?
Sure! There's always something new to discover!
Hmmm...well, if you say so, comrade. Besides, you've come all the way to the settlement, so we should head out there anyway.
Sounds good. Uh, which way do we go?
We can get to Sol Terrano:Star Dunes directly west from the Sol Terrano Desert entrance.

Thankfully I don't have to wait until the sun sets this time.

It's...not quite as impressive this way. :v:

It's so beautiful. And it's surprisingly cool for the desert!
Since we're near the ocean, the heat doesn't get too stifling.
No, I don't even notice the heat at all! I never really appreciated how magnificent the desert scenery actually is! I could get to really like this place.
Isn't it amazing? The Hornless can't appreciate beauty like this. Only we can.
I'm not sure about--

An earthquake?!
I don't think so. That felt more like a rockslide.
Do you get those often around here?
Yeah. The rocks around here tend to become unstable, especially after we get rain.
So I guess the desert's beautiful...but also awfully dangerous.

Nevermind all the things trying to murder us out here. It's the rockslides that make it dangerous!

Do you head out here often, Kuruna?
I've come here all my life! I used to sneak out here a lot with Ondorus when we were children.
That doesn't sound like.appropriate behavior for an elder!
Well, even elders used.to be kids, you know.
Sorry! I didn't mean.to insult you!
Heh. You didn't insult me. I know it's hard to imagine me as a kid.
It sure is...
Time just flew by back then. It felt like our own secret hideout.
It sounds like this place means a lot to you. I wish I could get my memories back...
Oh, I didn't mean to offend you!
I'm not offended at all! I want to get them back because I want to tell you about my childhood, too!
I'd like to hear those memories, comrade.

Well, you have to start with the part where a human and a wooly committed crimes against the natural order, and then had to teach their kid how to switch between the forms, and...

Well, should we head back to the settlement?
Yeah, I have some work to take care of back there.

You know, I always kind of wondered where the rock spawns on the farm came from. The sticks make sense because it's below a giant tree, but the rocks? Are gnomes smuggling them under cover of night? Is Shara putting them there so we have something to do?

At least it's not a mystery for the desert fields, because rocks apparently just fall from the sky at random. Hopefully Link's little acorn hat doubles as a hard hat.

And then everything goes black.

Sorry about the partial portraits/dialogue boxes, but the timing for some of these animations is a bitch.

Comrade! You've come to! Oh, I was so worried!
What...happened?

Oh no, we've lost our memory again! I guess it's time for Kuruna to give us a conveniently empty farm in town and

You don't remember? You knocked me out of the way of a falling rock! Such valorous instincts, comrade!
I apologize profusely. It seems I was...distracted.
You aren't hurt at all?
No, I'm fine. If not for your bravery, though, I'm not sure what might have happened? How about you? Are you in pain?
A mild headache, but I'm doing fine other than that.
That's good to hear. It looks like my healing arts worked.
You have healing powers? I guess that's what this glowing light is.
Indeed. All Univir elders are skilled in the healing arts.
You must be pretty powerful! Even my headache's going away now! You're amazing, Kuruna!
No, comrade. You're the one who's amazing. You sacrificed yourself for the Univir elder today. That means so much to me and my people! I will not forget your selflessness, comrade.
I'm just glad you're safe. That's all I wanted. Anyway, we should probably get out of here before we run into any more rockslides!
Definitely!

You're sure you'll be okay?
Oh, I'm more than okay. And it's all thanks to you! What about you, comrade? How are you doing?
Your healing arts are amazing! I think I feel even better than before that rock flattened me!
I know my healing powers are potent...but not that potent! Take care of yourself out there, comrade. I want to see you come back in one piece!
I will!
Here's a token of my appreciation. It's the least I can do. Use it when you run low on health.
Thanks a lot! I'll keep that in mind.
I hope I can show you some more of the desert sometime.

I can poo poo these out en masse, but I guess it's the thought that counts.

Meanwhile, with the hornles...er, humans.

But don't you think Evelyn's outfits are a little...off?
That's crazy talk! The designs themselves are sublime, but they leave me feeling cold. I get the same feeling when I look at junk!
I guess it's a genetic defect, then.

I'd ask where the ice came from, but this is a town within shouting distance of a land of eternal winter.

Norad?
Yes, it's a small kingdom surrounded by larger ones. This is the birthplace of the dragon legend.
Really? So you must be pretty familiar with the story by now.
Well, actually...I never was very interested, so I don't remember much of it.
Oh.

The geography of the Rune Factory world is never relevant to the plot(aside from the Sechs Empire invasions in 1 and 4), but you can get more details here if you want.

More importantly, there's a :siren: bathmergency! :siren:

Music: Home 2

It's something I heard from an old friend of hers.
...!
Sakuya...?
Suddenly I'm getting a chill.

Pfft, she's harmless.

That's why you should strike at the end of their attack. Or a heavy weapon. like an axe or hammer will work well, too.

See? Harmless.

Pia?! What happened?!

Let's just ignore the fact that Sakuya was out front two seconds ago.

Nah, that may be what it looks like, but I'm still rarin' to go! Trust me! Besides, who...else...can clean the...bath...?
No! Mom will do it. You get some rest!
The...bath...NEEDS...me!
Just do it!
I'll stop...for a little bit. Maybe.

She's been really enthusiastic lately. But maybe too much when it comes to the bath. I know work's important, but it's not important enough to work yourself to the bone.
She cares so much about the bath.
Well, it seems like she's alright. I'm sure she'll be back to work in no time. But I'm sure she'd love it if you took a Fried Squid to her.
Fried Squid? Yeah, I think I can manage that!
Although, I have a feeling she'd just be happy to see you.
Really?

:ohdear:

I should really just start stockpiling squid.

In proper state fair fashion, fried squid is served on a stick.

And Sofia's in our house. Staring vacantly at the entrace. Possibly unaware that we're frying up a squid for the local bath-obsessed mermaid.

(Once villagers like you enough, they start going into your house at random. It'd be cute if I was ever in my house for more than two seconds at a time.)

I feel a little bad having you do all this for me. I need to get better and back to work!
You don't need to push yourself so hard...
Huh?
Sakuya was upset. You need to take better care of yourself. She gave me an earful, too. It seems like you don't think you're any good without the bath.
Yeah, that's right.
What?
If I didn't have the bath, I'd have nothing left. Then I'd feel bad for Sakuya because.she made me who I am.
...I don't think people can make you anything.
Huh?
Sakuya didn't make you who you are or anything, you changed when you met Sakuya. And so, that's what made you happy the most.
Happy...?
Let's go somewhere together when you're feeling better. I want to go somewhere with you.
...OK.

Thanks for coming. Seems like she wasn't going to be listening to me. Oh, and this is from Mom. She says to take good care of her girls.
Oh, but I didn't do anything--
She's really busy right now, but she's worried about Pia, too.

An alarmingly credible threat. :stare:

She will?!
Anyway, take good care of Pia!

Our prize is slightly underwhelming, but less underwhelming than a lot of other recent quest rewards.

Time for Collette. Maybe someone out there likes her. Maybe.

For this quest, Collette isn't in either of her usual haunts(the restaurant & the apothecary). Instead...

This bit might be more meaningful if she was feeding/petting something actually dangerous. Instead she's feeding the apple/dog thing that's only a hair more intimidating than a wooly.

Link...I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit scared. But I feel like I need to distinguish myself from other cooks. Cooking is a force that brings together those who eat and those who feed. Neither of those people can say which job is more important.
I see.

But I haven't been able to do that very well lately. I keep messing up. All I've been thinking about is growing taller. Maybe I should just.give up my dreams of being a good cook...then--
It'll be okay.
What?
What you just said. "Neither can say which is important."
Yeah...?
Doesn't that include yourself? People who eat, and people who feed. And your own feelings. Collette, you're thinking about sacrificing yourself.
...
Caring for everybody leads to caring.for yourself.

You're right...
I'll take better care of everyone else! And me, too!
Yes.
Alright! I'm feeling better! And I'm getting hungry! Thank you for today! Link! I'll work harder from now on!
(Taking care...Maybe...Collette might accept my transforming powers...)
What's the matter?
Oh...no, it's nothing. (I don't have enough courage.)

They really had to reach to find something vaguely poignant for Collette, huh?

Music: Oddward Valley

Oh well. Let's go deal with a boss.

That gate sure looks like a plot thing. (The monster drop is Giant Gloves, which give +1 ATK and +3 DEF when used to upgrade)

But first, mining. Never say no to a bunch of rocks on one convenient screen.

What do we get to beat up this time? A lobster? A dragon? A tank? Sherman trying to eat a tank?

But...It's too quiet. Like there never was any howling. I need to tell Sakuya, I should get back to town!

Don't forget to pick up the free gift for Sofia. :v:

Grating blocks us from re-entry once we leave. Hmm.

I'm damned lucky Sakuya's still awake at this hour.

The diner got vandalized!
What?!
I heard it was like a giant lion. Maybe it's the same one that attacked me.

Run! Run like plot triggers depend on it!

What happened here?!

Nobody got hurt, but it snatched the Salted Char right out of my hands!
...I don't look that scary when I'm scarfing, do I?!
I'd cooked that fish to perfection, too.
A lion-like beast? I'd better head to Oddward Valley! The townspeople have a right to eat in peace!
I'm afraid to cook anything now! Who knows what vile beast the smells might attract?!

Nah, look at the time. We can kill a lion tomorrow. Or next week. Eventually.

Music: Town (Day)

Besides, now it's Sherman's birthday and that's much more important.

He likes cooked food, so he's just getting a rice ball. :effort:

Yeah. I want to get bigger. And eating good food should make me grow up fast, right?
I don't think it actually works like that. I mean, it's good to eat healthy food, but your body isn't going to grow until it's ready.
Really? Oh...
But you should enjoy being a kid now. You'll have plenty of time to be a grownup later.
I see. Well, if you say so, I guess I can wait.

Glad to see someone in this town has a healthy attitude towards growing taller.

I just told Blaise to bake nine.
Nine?! Why does he need nine cakes?!

You don't maintain a waistline like that by slacking off. :colbert:

Particularly not food!

Fine, fatass, here's your birthday ric...are those statues of turnips?

I hate these! How terrible! No thank you very much.

While I'm in the giving mood, Marian gets a pumpkin. It seems vaguely appropriate.

Are you sure?
Well, I couldn't say...I just feel like it's something you'd get if you worked hard at it.
...Maybe you're right.

Even me...?
Aren't you happy now, Raven?

......
Sorry...

Well, I think we can all agree on that!
Really? I didn't know that! Does that mean you'll join me in raiding her studio in "Operation Fish-Scale Justice"?
Uh...I don't think we find her outfits offensive for the same reasons!

It's criminal that this is never an actual quest.

Duh! Who doesn't know "Radish Rangers"? It was a really popular play in the city back when I was a kid! "Go, go Radish Rangers!" That was the theme song! All the kids used to sing it back in the day!
What was the plot?
This disembodied head recruited five teenagers with attitudes, and they fought giant monsters using various types of oils and spices!
Uh...that doesn't seem like appropriate material for kids!

Link confirmed as zero fun.

It seemed normal at the time! But looking back, that disembodied head was wack! And he was always hitting on the female team members!

I went with Gaius the other day, but I guess you help with the mining, too, don't you?
Sometimes...When our supplies are low, or when Gaius can't go outside.
I see. Then where are we going to mine today?
Oddward:Windy Hill...or something.
Or something...?
...Then Oddward:Windy Hill.
Are you just picking random spots?
...Let's just go.
Oh, okay.

Oh? And Raven, too.
Yes...
Oh. I forgot you said you were going to take the day off!
Umm. Well then the.store is...
Guess we're closed today!
Won't your customers be mad?
Ah, don't sweat it. Anyway, are you guys on a date?
N-No. I'm helping Raven gather some material.
Materials?
...!
Yes. She said you were running out.
We are?
...
Hmm...I guess we are.
What?
Well, I'll leave the gathering to Raven, and I'll get back to the store.
Yes, I think that's best. Someone should be there.
Yeah. Well, see you.
...

If Gaius was any more chill, he'd be a snowman.

Curry Udon for dinner tomorrow, OK?
Oh...
OK...

Oh, I see.
...Let's go.
Oh, wait.

Raven dies a lot on the way to the destination, but thankfully this isn't an escort mission.

Well, I should--

Is that a wooly?
...It's okay. This one looks like the one from the ice field.
I see. It likes you, Raven.
...

Well, let's go then.
Yes.

Back at the entrance to the dungeon...

...!

(What is...this light? My body is...)
(Oh no, I'm transforming!)

Thank god noted friend to monsters Raven(who blatantly shares the same secret as us) didn't find out that we're half monster!!

Nevermind that we dashed into the cave right in front of her. A+ stealth game, Link.

What was that light?

Where's Raven--

Raven!

What's the matter? You don't look well.
No...it's nothing.
Are you sure? Well, maybe you should just rest for today. I'll take you home.
OK...

Thanks for today...
Don't worry about that, it's time for rest!
Yes...

All angst aside, at least she pays well.

Oh. Link...
Sorry. I'm just thinking...

I could name some, but honestly they'd be the exceptions that prove the rule.

Also basically none of them are romantic leads which is probably the issue at hand with our furball protagonist. Romantic tension via thickness of head is a time-honored tradition for the convolution of plots, if people were actually honest and forthright with their feelings you might get somewhere too fast and then how would you fill time.

It's not a typo, though, that's actually what's in the Japanese artbook - which is the closest the series has or will ever get to a Word of God.

Grass colors are seasonal. Summer brings Green Grass(which I confuse with antidote grass. A lot.), indigo grass, and purple grass(which looks very similar to indigo grass) with it.

Why are the fields such a mess all of a sudden? Well...

Summer also brings typhoons with it. They'll cause a ton of poo poo to spawn in your fields, and can delete crops at any stage of growth.

This effect also applies to dungeon fields(except the cave field from the fall dungeon).

Have fun doing all your planting en masse so you get something out of it once nature is done ruining your day. :shepicide:

Hilarious!
Hilarious? Hilarious how?
Hilarious! You know, like ghosts! Zombies! Marian!
Ah, I understand. Especially after you mentioned that last part.
Anyway, I ate a gourmet soup prepared by a three-star chef!
Well, we've got one right here in town. I'll just ask Blaise to whip up some more.
No. I need to give the three-star chef some birds before he can make another batch. Specifically...he needs bird saliva.
That's an...interesting ingredient.

Labeling text boxes correctly is easy.

Could you catch 3 birds by 11AM?
Hmm, by 11AM? I'm not sure I can.
Why do you think I told you to take your time?!
I'll, uh...do what I can, then.
You better! If you catch a bird, just give it to me. I'll send them all to the chef together.
Understood!
Oh, if you run quickly by holding down R, you can catch the birds more easily!

True to her word, you can walk by holding down R and this lets you pick up birds without scaring them away.

Sadly they can't go into your inventory, so you have to carry them back one at a time.

If you're bored you can also pick up birds and throw them at things. Not that I've ever done that.

You're welcome!

Well then, Marian suddenly became a giant and picked me up.

"Come on, it's just tea!" So I said okay and drank it, and I shrunk smaller and smaller! "Huh? That wasn't supposed to happen. Let's try it again!" I mean, why did that happen?! I'm the older one here!
So she still gets you, even in your dreams.

No. Self-preservation. Instinct.

And so, what's the medicine?
It's a "growth serum". There's someone perfect to test it on.
Test...?
Now, Link! Go find that evasive Collette and bring her here!

Wait, my body's moving on its own...?

More medicine?!
I don't believe it! It must have been the tea...Why don't those things fail like the others?!

Karina is about as useful in combat as you'd expect. She can use a bit of magic, but she's not exactly aggressive about using it.

What's this poo poo, then?

Oh. You can tell they really couldn't figure out a graceful way to write around this boss, since there's no natural plot points guiding you towards it other than a stream of seemingly random 'oh by the way this lion monster did poo poo' events.

Really?! Please tell me more!
Well, I was just fishing down by the falls. I got hungry, so I got my lunch out, and it came out of nowhere. It was so fast. And its claws and giant teeth...Man! It was scary! I just got out of there as fast as I could.
So it's down there?!
I'm not sure. I went to check on my fishing rod, and it wasn't there any more. Looks like it took my Salted Char, too. That's too bad.
(Blaise said it got his Salted char too. Maybe I can use it to lure it out. I'll get some ready before I go.) Thank you.
You're welcome. Good luck taking out that monster, Link!

A char.

A frying pan.

A plan.

I'm trapped!

Not very hard. Karina even gets a levelup out of it.

:toot:

Oh no!

They fall to the strategy of "hit them until they die."

I'm sure Karina will be very helpful in this fight and not die instantly.

There he is!

So this is the monster that attacked Blaise and Collette! You'll pay for that!

Ruh roh.

Yup. It's a duo boss.

Wait, another one?! Which one attacked the diner?!

Guess it doesn't matter! They're both about ready to make me their meal!

Music: VS Amaranthine and Crimsone

The basic gimmick here is that the red one(Crimsone) is a physical attacker, and the blue one(Amaranthine) is a mage.

And...that's really the entire gimmick. Amaranthine spams that cyclone spell a lot and Crimsone goes pretty fast, but their attack patterns are nothing noteworthy.

Red one down. Purple one gains a damaging roar at some point but is still nothing to write home about. This is honestly just kind of a filler boss.

And down goes the other one.

:toot:

Way to ruin the mood.

(Villagers will automatically go home at 9PM. I'm assuming Karina stayed later because I dragged her into a boss fight.)

I'm lucky enough to get both lions' drops. Their effects reflect their gimmicks.

Music: Mystery

What memory will I get back this time? Where was I before? Why did I come here? What are these orbs to begin with...I hope it all becomes clear, but...

???: ...
???: Five monsters fled to this town. Will you go after them, Link?
Past-Link: Five of them?! Okay...!
???: We're counting on you.
???: ...
Past-Link: *pant pant* Where are they? !! Found you! Stop!!...

I was chasing after them. Raccoon from Privera Forest. Skelefang, the monster that attacked the desert settlement. Crimsone, Amaranthine. The monsters here that took Sakuya's and Blaise's lunches. And one more...
It's no good. I can't remember the last one.
...! But...I have to go! He's dangerous. I can't rest knowing that he's out there! And that's my only lead to get my memories!

So each monster Link was chasing was one of the bosses from the dungeons. No prizes for guessing where the last one shows up.

But there's no hurry, so let's go to bed.

I found that Karina's laziness is actually kind of a plus once you're at a certain point of the game. Maybe more so when she levels up and you give her some appropriate gear?

So which NPC is the best fighter in this game? There doesn't seem to be anyone like Forte from RF4 with obvious fighting skills anywhere. Considering there's absolutely no military presence anywhere in Norad, and the strongest person in town is usually a random amnesiac farmer, it's a wonder Sechs doesn't own the place already. I'm honestly not sure, since I've never gotten into using NPC backup in this game. Although if it's like RF4, the answer is "anyone you equip well and bring along with you often enough that their level's on par with yours," minus the few NPCs with really annoying combat habits.

Malon/Salisb and Micah have upgraded to providing Medium Milk and Medium Fleece, respectively. It sure is nice of the Buffamoo to package the milk in bigger cartons as their output grows.

The Sharance tree gets bigger with each boss we beat, although only the first one gives us more usable space. I'm sure that has no plot relevance whatsoever.

Whew...I'd wish to be able to eat something until I'm full.

And eggs. Mostly eggs.

Let's see what Karina's up to this fine morning.

The dungeons? Why?
Just because. (I don't feel like explaining.)
Well, for starters, they're more like wild areas than dungeons.
I see. Well, whatever they are, I've got some questions about them.

Huh. (Even with all the monsters? Maybe monsters aren't so bad once you get used to them.)

I see. (I guess those are pretty good.)

Okay. I'll get one for you.
What?
Just wait here.
Oh, okay. (I'm glad he caught on.)

This actually changes depending on what you pick earlier! If you say you like fishing she'll want a fish, for example.

Thank you for your contribution, Daria.

It's random whether any given mushroom is poisonous or not. I'm sure Karina will be fine.

Yes. That's the same thing that happened to me.
What?
The more I think about it, I've smelled it so many times shipping it. (I completely forgot.)
Notice sooner.

Once again, she actually does have a reaction if she gets a poison mushroom!

Hm...? (Everything's foggy.) Is this a poisonous mushroom?
What?!
You said you like eating stuff off the ground, didn't you? Well, open up. (I dare you to eat this.)
H-Hey! I won't eat just anything I find!

Rejoining the true timeline...

Here, for everything you did today. Thanks for everything. I learned a lot. (Now I'm one step closer to city life.)
?

A garbage accessory. All it does is give you immunity to critical hits. Horray!

When I was in my bed, I could hear my mom and customers laughing. (I felt a bit lonely.)
...

Let's try someone less likely to bombard us with weird questions.

Music: Home 2

Well, I'll ask Gaius.

Hey, Gaius!
Huh...?

Oh, hey, Link. What's the matter?
I came to see Raven.
Raven? She's not there?
No.
Well, she does wander off now and then.
Is something the matter?
Well, she just hasn't been herself recently.
I see. (Probably because of that dungeon.)
Sofia or Karina might know something.
Okay. I'll go ask them.
Thanks.

Who knows? (Wait, didn't I see her?) She's gone?
Yeah. Gaius didn't hear anything either.
Oh.
What?
Wait, she was walking towards Vale: Icy Rosebush.
You saw her?!
I think I did... (Vaguely though.)
Thanks, I'll look there.

Hmm. Let's go see what Sofia has to say, just for shits and giggles.

What could have set her off?

Good question, but not the one we're trying to answer right now.

What?!
No.
Oh, I see.
That reminds me, she said that she wouldn't be able to see you again. What did you do to Raven, Link?
... (Does it have to do with that light...?)

Music: Vale River

Welp, better go handle this.

Stay away from me!
Huh...?
...

...Why did you come...?
Huh...?
That was...a mistake. I don't have anything more to say to you.
Wait--
...Go home!

...Don't come near me.
...Please.
...

Good job, you drove the wooly away with too many ellipses.

I'm alone again.

But right now--

That wooly, it's drawn to Raven.
...Maybe if I pretend to be that wooly...

Now to use the snow to make me white...

For once Link's cunning plan actually seems vaguely cunning.

I see...you came back.
Bah!
... (I'm sorry to trick you.)

Bah?
Link...he hates me now for sure.
B-bah bah bah! (That's not true!)
I don't know what you're saying.
B-bah... (Of course not.)
But...thank you.
I wonder why this always happens...
Bah?
And I thought we were getting along so well...that light...it takes everyone away.
... (This is the curse she talked about before.)
So I decided not to be friends with anyone again. That's what I decided...but being lonely is hard...
...

Icy hellholes are great places for naps.

You'll catch a cold if you sleep here, Raven.

Link...
Go away. I don't have anything more to say to you.
Because of your curse?
?!

I thought finally I've found it...finally I've grasped it! But...when I open my hands, there's nothing there.
It's always empty.
...
I can't take it any more. I don't want to lose someone important again...I can't take it...

...!
Not again! (But...why is it...? It feels so familiar.)

(Maybe it feels similar. And that wooly...)

What?
I thought you disappeared.
...it's okay.

See, I'm here. I didn't disappear.
...
...idiot.
Hey...Raven.
Yes.
Let's go home.
...O-OK.

Raven?
Um...thanks for today.
What?
This is for you.....Bye.

Hm? What's this on my clothes...? ...! This is from the bird in the Sol Terrano Desert! But if its feather's here, then it must have been real...but why was it there? ...Well, no use pondering it.

:unsmith:

And just because, here's the state of Link's skills and relationships:

(Yes, love is an element. It also reduces RP use in wooly form.)

Turns out that talking to almost everyone every day gives you remarkably even friendship charts.

Eggman likes us a little already. :3:

Side note: The textdump I use cuts off in the middle of Raven's event, so don't be shy about typo hunting.

Actually, as counterintuitive as it may sound, I would recommend actually eating them. After all, as shown in that skill update at the end, status resistances are counted as skills. Therefore, eating the various poisonous mushrooms (which, if I'm remembering correctly, can inflict nearly any status problem depending on the specimen) can count as immunization training! :pseudo:

Two days. Tomorrow's weather is determined when you wake up today, basically. It's like that in every RF and HM game as far as I know.
I don't know about any other HM/RF games, but I've savescummed to avoid typhoons in the first RF by saving the night before and reloading when I wake up. It's the reason I save before bed and not after waking up. If weather was determined the day before, I shouldn't be able to do that.

It might only be true for games where you can get an "accurate reading" on the weather the day before, then - eg RF2, HM SNES, etc.

Are there any weapons that are kind of safe to use around crops based on what they count as?

Objection! I object! That was... objectionable!

Long/short/dual blades bad, because they count as scythes.

Everything else is okay since axes count as axes(!), hammers count as hammers(!!), and spears & staves don't have a farm tool effect afaik.

Another #MarianTip: You train your defense skill by taking damage. So make sure you get hurt a lot for maximum not getting hurt in the future!

I'm pretty sure hammers won't hurt your crops, due to mining hammers not being used to plant/harvest crops. I don't think axes will, either, due to lumber axes not interacting with crops. I'm also almost certain that the gloves in RF4 don't directly map to a tool and thus don't harm crops, but I don't even know if they're in this game.

Gloves in RF4 are lifted directly from RF3's transformed attacks (same animations and everything). So basically, fighting on farmland is fine if you're a sheep at the time!

Hammers return tilled soil to untilled farmland. I just don't know of the top of my head if they destroy crops, too.
