Just came across this in my desk: A Techtool Protege FireWire diagnostics drive. Has a bootable system plus all the Techtool utilities on it to fix hard drive issues. Pretty sure Apple changed the Firewire port as soon as I bought one. Not sure I ever used it other than to test it out.

edit: Turns out I have two of them. One for intel macs, the other for PowerPC.

The Xing mp3 encoder was one of the very worst. It made garbage files that sounded like they were being played from underwater

I used the original reference Fraunhofer MP3enc for a long-rear end time since the 128Kbps files it produced sounded better than Xing 160Kbps ones. It was more effective in busy areas that would leave cymbals washy. Not in the audiophile sense but really noticeable.

I once recorded 10 or so MP3's off a PC onto my MiniDisc. Basically what you did was connect the line out on the PC to a line in on the MD and played all the songs and added track breaks etc. About halfway through the album my brother started using the PC so there are random system sounds like mouse clicks and error messages notification sounds.

I'm soo glad (kinda) that I was late to the party with MD. I had a sweet NetMD one that used USB to transfer. It was bittersweet because it used that piece of poo poo software SonicStage Sony made.

One of them was ripped buy a guy who had AOL instant messenger on in the background. The door-shutting sound when one of your friends logs off plays during the bridge of the song, and I always listen for it when I play that song.

Was the song "Coo Coo Ca Choo" by the Bloodhound Gang by any chance? If that's it, that was me!

I remember when I uploaded it I still didn't notice the AOL sound because it happened at a perfect part in the song. It's still on YouTube like that to this day! I must have uploaded it in 1998.

Speaking of AOL, they are going to start charging monthly for people to use their software. If anyone remembers, earlier in the thread I logged onto AOL 4.0 and screen grabbed a bunch of stuff that still works, and the chat rooms are still active. I wonder if they are going to be completely empty now.

That was a pretty lame demo not helped by the inherently terrible sound output the Mega Drive has.

Maybe it's worth noting I said it's looking fine and didn't say poo poo about music. It's graphic style is good and there are some impressive effects considering the hardware. Those oldschool scrollers can go gently caress themselves though.

Hey now, the FM + PSG chips in the Mega Drive produced some of the best video game music of its generation. :colbert:

Edit: and I thought the demo was neat. Transparency and polygon rendering are examples of things the MD was never meant to do.

Yeah man what the hell, that demo was dope and the soundtrack was good

Now, it was not completely what I figured it would be as I have a pretty good idea of what to expect from a demo and I was like "O.K. here are the gorgeous paintings, but where are the inbetween wormhole tunneling and bouncing polygon scenes" but reading that the hardware fundamentally should not have even been able to do the few polygons it did have made it make sense.

Composers used the Neo Geo's PCM chip intensively in many cases. In some cases it was just 100% recorded music playing on it with that glorious 11khz resolution, with no FM synth whatsoever (Matrimelee and Neo Bomberman are some good examples).

Flipping a coin and figuring this belongs more here than the obsolete/failed tech thread...

I finally got around to photographing some old devices in my latest workplace (high school laboratory) - nothing too old or unique or innovative, but still neat. And functional!

  • Lower left is a combined power supply; 300VDC/100mA on the left, 50VDC/10mA on the right, 6.3VAC/4A in the middle. It's made by a company called Selby's, so maybe the 1970s or early 80s. I haven't tested this one.
  • Upper left is a signal generator. It still works, but there's never been a good reason to use it; the one time I could have, the lower limit of 18Hz was too high. "Model ORC-27A RC Oscillator" by Kikusui Electronics Corp; incredibly, the manual is available online from the original manufacturer. It contains five vacuum tubes which in hindsight I'm lucky I haven't broken. No date on the manual, sadly. A label on the back suggests this was bought from or donated by the local university at some point.
  • Lower middle is an analog oscilloscope, the Good Will GOS-955. It not only works, it's the only oscilloscope we own (apart from some lovely USB data recorders which can't be viewed live). Circa 1980.
  • Lower right is a Griffin & George 5kV EHT power supply (5kVDC/3mA, with a few other <=12V connectors). This one is used once a year for one specific physics experiment, though our setup isn't as fancy (and hasn't changed since I did it as a student):

  • Upper right are two more power supplies, 20VDC/6A or 18VAC/10A max, not very interesting apart from their pleasantly-chunky design.
  • Upper middle is a battery in a wooden case! Though to be honest the case is mostly for show, it's just two plastic-walled cells inside. "nife alcad | Alkaline Batteries Limited (Redditch)", Battery H13714, Type ZP242, Capacity 24 Ah. I assume it's nickel-iron. I quickly topped up the cells and short-circuited it to get nearly half a volt - not bad considering it probably hasn't been maintained for a decade or two!
I took close-up photos of the devices, but they're just on http://imgur.com/a/VuEHg instead of clogging up this post. I'd like to take more professional ones when I have free time and more bench space (i.e. never). There's also a bonus photo of our non-portable laser pointer, which is approaching it's 30th birthday but is otherwise unremarkable - and someone already put the same model in their museum with much better photos anyway.

Meanwhile, our latest modern signal generator was dead on arrival, the school bought a truckload of datalogging peripherals for the students which the teachers have abandoned because the software is terrible, my own computer is barely powerful enough to load our chemical manifest database... if only we could go back to the days of sturdy technology and straightforward student electrocutions.

Some remasters are really loving good.

Steven Wilson's work on Opeth's Damnation album is stellar, as are his 40th anniversary Jethro Tull remasters.

I don't know who did the 2007 remasters of Blind Guardian's most important albums, but they're a lot clearer and less muddy than the originals. There might be a very slight reduction in absolute dynamic range, but I'll take it because now the bass lines are actually properly audible.

Should we do a BBS invasion?

I don't mean anything nasty like forum invasions - DDoS, spamming, etc. - but if we find some cool telnet/SSH BBS somewhere and 5 of us start logging in once a week and doing normal things for a little while, that would probably be like an invasion for most BBSes as I don't imagine many of them see that much activity.

I'd love to find somewhere with some door games I used to play like Legend of the Red Dragon, Arrowbridge, Barren Realms Elite or MUDs, and maybe some old shareware titles so I can relive the experience of downloading a game, playing it for a minute and deciding it's crap compared to stuff from Apogee and iD. I'll probably get over this desire fairly quickly :v:
