@texas goons, while I'm probably at risk of being a company shill with this, UHAUL is offering free storage to Hurricane victims for a month. Been coordinating relief being sent south and have helped secure a few Rockport folks storage today so I figured I'd just throw it out there. I know there's still availability in Corpus Christie.

Yeah, but those offers are generally made to either embarrass the receiving nation or are logistically not viable. Venezuela made a big show about offering low-cost heating oil to poor Americans and then trumped it up as a sign their socialist revolution was better than those capitalist pigs in El Norte. I wouldn't be surprised if Cuba's offer was similar. The real question is whether we needed 1500 doctors and medicine and I'm not sure we did. There were problems (read Five Days at Memorial if you want a harrowing account) but those were because no one could get to those areas, not because we didn't let Cuba send people.

The issue with making broad statements like "gently caress X state" or "Burn the South" is that it's taking any ownership away from the decent people who live there. It's actually furthering the white/conservative narrative that they're the real owners of the regional identity, and everyone else is secondary, inferior, or undeserving of a voice.
