is there a difficulty setting and can you change it during your playthrough?

Not during the first play through. There’s an easy mode you can choose before each stage. The difficulty is set the same as other Mario games: once you clear a world, you can then replay the levels with added challenge/difficulties.

The campaign does not have difficulty levels, it has a cheat button and it also give you a score based on number of turns. The coop mode has difficulty levels. I haven't seen the single player "challenge" mode.

E: FB
sounds like the challenge mode also has difficulty settings. Cool.

Get Luigi the rifle with the +chance for bounce on Smashers, if you can.

Also, movement damage like sides and stomps does not trigger their charge. In fact, sliding/stomping in general is something you should be doing every time you have a chance for it.

this game is not just fun it's also the absolute perfect use of the switch. I played it in tablet mode for a bit, then docked it and now I can just kinda lounge and watch Hulu while I hold the controllers in my hands. Lazy gaming is best gaming

There's no leveling up, but there's skill trees that introduce or enhance existing abilities, plus you get more health per completed world.

There are different guns too, but aside from straight damage upgrades differences are mostly to the effect of which status effect they give, the odds that it applies that effect, and maybe which enemy type it has a greater chance to give it to.

There’s plenty of weapons to choose from and each character has a skill tree you’ll need to manage.

I just finished the first world. God drat that boss fight was amazing. It’s stupid how long it took me for it to “click”. I have no idea how I managed to not lose anyone during it.

And now I can replay the cleared levels for gold medals I missed AND also replay the world for challenges? Yeah this game is going to end up taking a whole lot more than 20 hours to complete.

EDIT: holy poo poo do not try the first challenge as soon as you get it.

I beat the first boss to and it was pretty fun. I accidentally used a motorbomb aimed at the boss though and was surprised when it raced across the field and pushed every button for me :v:.

Also how do you do stage 1-9 without losing anyone to the final skirmish? I nailed 3 smashers before getting overwhelmed and if I went into the pipe that chain chomp was waiting. It felt kinda lose-lose

Do you have marios hammer unlocked? That thing that has a stupidly big AOE around the primary target.

And on 1-9, you could take out the first one then B-Line to the other side of the lower level with a team jump, though one left behind will need to be tanky enough to take hits from the smashers/chain chomp.

Another thing that they do not make clear is that the chain chomp has a limited movement range (At least from what I have seen).

Augh I almost lost to the first world midboss because I accidentally moved Rabbid Peach out into the open instead of into the pipe I meant to put her in. My kingdom (battle) for an "undo movement" button.

Also this is my first time playing an XCOM style game, is there any way to see if your character will hit an enemy when you move them? I kept on having issues with the midboss where I would move a character to where I thought they were in range to shoot an enemy only to be greeted by the "no ones in range, idiot" buzzer.

Other than my lack of knowledge of the game type, I'm having fun! The soundtrack is amazing, I'm wondering how the Mario Odyssey soundtrack is going to top it.

there's usually a small box near the enemy denoting your chance to hit them, being either 100 %, 50 %, or 0%

He meant if there’s a way of knowing what those % are going to be before you move to a specific location. I don’t think there is without actually moving.

that's just something you're gonna have to suss out. I think it's easy because it's based on some pretty basic visual cues like what your character's line of sight is gonna be and where the enemy is positioned relative to cover, but ymmv

Yeah the first Mid-boss beat my rear end. The level right before it keys you in on the mechanic you need to use to have an advantage and I totally forgot it. Prior to that fight game wasn't very challenging so that was very enjoyable. The theme for that fight also quite good.
