There are definitely some characters who are stronger or weaker than others. Zaamassal (post-nerf) and Marmalee are both weak enough that playing as them is almost always done as a deliberate handicap. Meanwhile, there are characters like Tanis who can, in the right hands, break characters over their knees and very conceivably get perfects while doing so.

Eustace handles better against characters that like to brawl, since he has some of the highest melee stats out of the box. The problem is that he's fragile, so rangers, dancers, and specialists can just have a field day with him. Guess what most of the better characters are? On a related note: Tanis isn't even in the top 5 non-banned characters. She's good, but Hepzibah, Lesandra, and Clive take the top spot, with Burman and Thessala close behind.

Well, the new tournament rules for Force Gauge and Dodge have really been shaking up the tiers, too.

I knew their were tiers, I was just wondering if I was missing something with Eustace. He's cool and his mechanics seem interesting but I've never seen him work. Dodge is just Dash at priority 3 right? How are people liking it? It seems like a pretty huge change.

I like it because there is no longer the issue of a bunch of match ups just turning into a game of dash-baiting chicken.

It's also SoB instead of AA, which means you can't negate it by going first. It's a big blow for speedster characters like Demitras, or those with "Become Active Player" tricks like Marmelee.

It means you can clash it out as well if you get a good read. It really opens up the options for strategy. ...I want my copy of Trials to arrive so I have an excuse to round people up and make them play Battlecon again.

It aggravates me how hard it is to get friends to play Battlecon. It's easier to get them to play LCGs with me and they're not even particularly good at those or enjoy the process that much (and hate deckbuilding). Why! This makes no sense! <looks mournfully at the complete set of Indines boxes>

Because BattleCON suffers from some of the same issues actual FGs suffer from, namely that doing well relies on having very good knowledge of complicated systems, and that makes it hard to break into.

Zaamassal post-nerf is probably still one of the best characters in the game, at the very least top 20. His control tools are amazing and Paradigm of Haste will be forever crazy. Tanis is weird, since she's solid but Playful skews some matchups really badly. We'll be taking a look at her for Devastation Remastered.

The next time my turn came up I picked one of my favourites (Kallistar) and still got my clock cleaned.

This is also a problem in FGs - so much of playing the game well depends on being able to predict what the opponent is likely to do next and countering it, which isn't something you can do when the other side is so inexperienced that they have no idea what not to do and when not to do it.

I think that the biggest thing Battlecon has working against it is that it is a 2 player game in an intrinsically social activity. A niche for 2 player games does exist, but it is harder to bring to a random meet up than something that sits 4 players.

Yeah; I get loads of play out of my 4-6 player stuff with my normal gaming group or at my FLGS' board game meetups, but not a whole lot of opportunity for 2 player gaming, other than playing the odd casual game here and there with my wife.

This is even more true for the card games I play but they seem to not struggle here. Battlecon is much better for giving you only a limited number of possibilities and telling you what all of them are.

On the other hand once Trials shows up I'll have enough Battlecon sets to run eight people simultaneously. Maybe I'll host a mini-tournament or something.

My only issue with BattleCON is the only other person who plays it with me spends ten minutes figuring out what combo will block me each turn. It's aggravating and killed the game for me honestly. I regret getting Fate and Trials since I haven't even finished putting Devastation together.

I grab a character I'm bad with when teaching new people as well, but I also will verbalize the start of my thought process to jump start their comprehension of the strategy. e.g. "Most of your cards that provide stun guard are in you discard. That combined with your characters low priority will give me a high chance of going first and stunning you."

Tekopo posted:How do you know which cards the clock chooses, though? The ideal would be some sort of heavily modified chess clock setup, where two timers run concurrently. You start the timer after recycling and taking force, and stop the timer to lock in your pair as your final answer. Run out of time, auto-lose the match. But that's an awfully complicated setup for a low-profile card game for dorks. ... Unrelated, incredibly stupid idea but: When BCO finally comes out, I'd absolutely want to run some sort of BattleCON + Yomi chessboxing tournament. Every matchup has to play both games against each other. No idea how the format or scoring would work yet, but...

What? That's way too complicated. Just put a 2 minute timer on selecting your cards and a 30second timer on anything else if you feel the need to.
