My grandpa was a marine on Guadalcanal and was in Johnny Basilone's squad. His brothers in law were in the navy. One during WWII in the pacific. The other merchant marine in WWII, airborne ranger in Korea (white guy in a black battalion!), navy diver, and eventually captain of the ship that recovered the shuttle tanks/boosters. A reminder this was the cultural attitude towards the grandparents we've been talking about before the war: "I wonder if they have it in 'em. Been taught a lot of nonsense in the last twenty years. My father's father spoke German and spent World War II translating intel without ever leaving the mainland. He never shut up about his service and sacrifice... My mother's father was a helicopter pilot who did two tours in Vietnam and then crashed during a routine training mission in California a decade before I was born. One of my grandfathers was some kind of government worker. I don't know which kind exactly. Whatever kind gets repeated personalized letters from three different Presidents and that no one in the family really liked to talk about in detail. Everyone who could have given me the full story is dead by now anyway. Another one was an ex-cop who tried to "retire" in his forties on a disability scam but got busted when he was spotted re-shingling his roof when he should have been in bed. It takes all kinds.

Haha I accidentally started a many-pages-long grandad chat. Guess I should contribute to it! I thought that on dad's side, grandpa wasn't old enough to fight but that's okay because there wasn't a lot Estonia could do against the Soviet Army. Later, the family fled with the retreating Wehrmacht because some had been collaborators and served in the Nazi puppet government. Grandfather later became a top-tier physicist and worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for some years before returning to the UK. Then a few years ago I learned he wasn't my grandad after all and I have no idea who is except that he's some Irish fella, just that my grandma cheated  Mom's side, Granda Jack was also just too young, but he worked at the Belfast dockyards as a teenager. One of his older brothers served, was shot in the head and had to spend regular time at the Franciscan Convent because it caused chronic headaches so painful they maddened him with rage, and the Sisters were willing to risk that whilst taking care of him in order to protect his family or regular nurses from his wrath during those times. (Outside of those episodes he was apparently an extremely kind and classy dude so it wasn't a cover for just being a poo poo). Later, after he died, his wife went to inform the office of it so they could end his pension payments, but after checking his records they informed her they would quietly continue paying them to her. None of the family has any idea what's in those records but we assume it must be something supremely badass.
