Both? Kinda sorta? There's some monster conflation going, which is pretty common in Touhou. She's a corpse animated by a Taoist necromancer, but the image of those has started overlapping with zombies in pop culture, so she has aspects of both.

Wikipedia says hopping vampire or zombie (literally "stiff corpse"), but since it drains chi/qi to survive, I prefer the former to the latter.

I was really high by the time I got to the second one so the only thing I remember other than the Shinjiro/Ken arc was the shot where it's just Yukari and the MC on the beach during the dark hour. That was cool. Got too high though so I didn't watch the last two, doing that today

Anyone remember Darkside Blues? I randomly started reading the novel series that was based on and it's making me nostalgic for those old violent, gory 'Japanimation' movies from the 90s. I remember watching Akira, Darkside Blues and Psychodiver at a friend's house while his parents were away and thinking: drat, Japanese shows really ARE just boobs and blood aren't they?

I have the manga, it was one of the first ones I ever bought and it was a completely random purchase lol

If you're hankering for that era just do a Kawajiri marathon; all the tits and gore you could want while still being pretty decent depending on your selection. Cyber City Oedo 808 would be a really good place to start.

Yeah it always confuses me when people want a live action version of an anime or game to be exactly the same as the source material. Wouldn't you rather see a different, original take on the story? My favorite kind of anime franchise is the kind where the game, anime, manga, novels etc present a completely different version of things. A good example being Galaxy Angel.

it's the people who go "i don't care that it was different, it was a complete poo poo movie anyways!" who really stun me, though

like, did I watch the same loving movie as them? the Death Note I watched is pretty much hands-down the most gorgeously-shot movie Netflix has put out since Beasts Of No Nation, has not one but three completely loving killer near-Oscar-level performances in it (obviously Dafoe kills it as Ryuk but I thought Nat Wolff was shockingly good as Light and Lakeith Stanfield is basically perfect as L), loving amazing effects (Ryuk looked goddamn incredible and the gore was ridonkulous), an awesome musical score... literally the only beef I have with it is that the plot is a little messy, and honestly, everything else outweighed that about as hard as it possibly could.

Mister Facetious posted:

the second and third RE movies are the only genuinely bad ones. the first is a relatively bog-standard but fun B-movie and gave us that laser hallway bit, and then Afterlife through the last one all completely loving own

the death note movie is well-made but also it's just kind of dumb and i didn't care to finish it

light being a giant loser is kind of funny but that's basically his entire character and it gets kind of boring after a while. i haven't seen any other death note stuff but hearing people reading it as a giant own on the source material just makes it sound kind of lame because on its own it doesn't really do anything to make it interesting

The first is dog poo poo, and the laser section is the prime example. Five minutes of jerking the audience around when they were all dead the second they were trapped. The entire movie is constantly wasting the watcher's time to stretch it to feature length.

With Death Note in particular we already had 420 adaptions of the same story anyhow so I'm glad they mixed it up

it's not really a "giant own on the source material," honestly it's pretty respectful

I wasn't really into it, but none of that had to with the liberties it took with the source material. The new ideas were all solid, but the execution was lacking.

The cinematography and lighting were outstanding, though. What a beautiful movie. :eyepop:

anyway:

the film's absolutely well shot but the script is terrible and while the cast gives it their all there's only so much they can do to elevate the material, and taking a thing that was mostly interesting for the high-stakes plotting and overdramtic counter-counter-counter strategies and turning it into final destination but less interesting is bad. 'well shot gore' isn't exactly enough to make me think something's really good
