I'm hoping to hell that it's a working group because I try to think the best of my comrades. If it's just an unofficial group of members of color it's absolutely inexcusable to present this with a title indicating it's a statement from the PoC hivemind, especially with the DSA being so weak on race issues as is. Love seeing white members gleefully using this to say "see the PoC agree with me!".

this was exactly their goal and it was not sent out to the PoC caucus.

A lot of you are saying, why did we pick Danny Fetonte? Danny Fetonte who raped and killed a girl in 1990? Should we even waste two seconds on Danny Fetonte, who raped and killed a girl in 1990? First of all it's not true, it's not true that Danny Fetonte raped and killed a girl in 1990.

If you have any proof that Danny Fetonte raped and killed a girl in 1990, stop gossiping and go right to the police with it!

In sf we helped clean homeless encampments and handed out cool pamplets to people urging them to not call the police on tents, i wish i had the template handy because it's really good

I think both sides share some good points. Twitter controversy shouldn't be reason enough to purge members, but the NPC should be accountable to members outside of the NPC.

We also need a system robust enough to combat the kind of political disenfranchisement that most poor and marginalized people have to deal with.

I'm hoping that the special conference thing the accountability folks are pushing happens, because it's both more democratic and within established rules

Yeah it's really hosed how theres more and more backlash against the homeless in California but these motherfuckers won't build more affordable housing. Everything that gets built nowadays is either a 5 bedroom mcmansion in Marin or Folsom or something or its a 'middle range' condo tower. The last time I saw a house you could still consider affordable get built was before the recession, when some family friend literally paid a company to ship out and install one of those prefabricated houses.

how many total local chapters are there?

if there's concern among chapters covering 2/3 or more of the membership (looks like potentially yes?), the locals could always call a special national convention and essentially redo the election*

*eta and it appears there would be plenary authority to do more or less anything else

I honestly think we may need a separate thread just for Danny talk, because it has absolutely devoured this thread. I get that this falls under the umbrella of DSA talk, but at this point it's become its own separate discussion. Also there are people itt who apparently have no interest in talking about anything else and frankly I'm tired of seeing the exact same argument over and over again.

I just dont get it at all. democratic centralism is literally how like every democratic structure I take part in works its just that only the socialist orgs call it democratic centralism. when my work democratically votes on rules that I dont like I still have to follow the rules while objecting to them and trying to build a case against the rule. in every other context this is understood as just how democracy works but for some reason when socialists do it its very bad.

Socialists make the distinction because some socialists want decision making to be centralized in a single organization, and others (especially anarchists) want it to be spread out among a bunch of co-equal local groups. Both groups want it to be democratic, just in different ways, so the one that wants a centralized structure becomes democratic centralist.

Also we need to specify the "democratic" part explicitly because :ussr:

my understanding of democratic centralism is that the last bit of this sentence is not the case, as that causes factionalism which is what democratic centralism is explicitly trying to prevent

Since Minneapolis just recently got $15 minimum wage passed, Twin Cities DSA members are going to be helping out with local strikes to both defend the ground we've gained and to fight for our comrades in the rest of Minnesota.

I love hearing about all the cool things that the other chapters are doing! It really pumps me up to get out and organize!

yeah the big diff. between something like dsa and, say, ISO or SAlt is that the latter two orgs attempt to stop their members from critcizing the org in a non-internal way. Whereas there's no kind of gag order of that kind in the DSA (obviously, as this thread and every other online has shown)
