Watching Comrade Detective on Amazon and it's ... so many things but mostly stupid. The propaganda is pretty interesting though.

A cop dies and someone breaks into his apartment, the police reassure the landlady that's it's just a premature attempt to redistribute Nikita's wealth. The cops killer wears a Reagan mask.

A cop lectures a drug dealer on how the CIA imports drugs to destroy inner city blacks.

The tough guy cop does a pirouette through some street ruffians. When he hears where his new partner is from, he calls him a goat fucker.

It's an 80s Communist, buddy cop TV series dubbed into English.

I never read the book(s) kind of got burnt out by the author but Elijah Wood keeps hitting it out of the park and the rest of the cast may be better than he was.

Recovering from that loving hobbit movie is amazing.

Edit: It’s also not real 80s propaganda, it’s produced recently and with the English overdub intended. However, it is real Romanians speaking Romanian on film.

Turned On on Netflix is pretty great - it's a series of documentaries focused on the subject of relationships/sex vs current technology. But the 5th episode is something else - an Australian guy falls in love with a camgirl from the US that he has had an online 'relationship' with for 4 years. He pays for her ticket so that she can meet him in Australia and it goes as well as you would expect. drat, that was hard to watch.

Thanks for the suggestion, I watched this last night and it was a doozy! The cam girl seemed sincere when she said she cared for the guy, but jfc how naive of her to think she could fly out there and just hang out. And her husband had really sad eyes :(

My coffee warned me about it.

Yeah, the scenes where the husband browses his smartphone while his wife strips naked in the background and professes love to her client whom she's going to visit on the weekend were something else. A lot of memorable moments in that episode.

There's something interesting in every episode though, the one with pornstars living together who seem all cool and cheerful before it's slowly revealed how the delusions they built around themselves break apart one by one was somewhat chilling as well.

Nthing Norsemen, it's fantastic. To make it more impressive I did a bit of digging and found out they filmed each scene twice, once in Norwegian and once in English to avoid the need for subtitles. Now that's goddamn dedication, both by the actors and the writers to make sure the script flowed well and kept its humor in both languages.

Any opinions on The Defenders yet? I know people mostly disliked Iron Fist and Luke Cage was lukewarm (:heh:), but I'm curious how the new one is shaping up. I'm only just starting it and 5 minutes in there has been a pretty good martial arts fight but they're doing more 'The Hand' stuff which is hopefully not going to be as boring as it's been previously.

I just assumed by now that people who already liked them will watch the Defenders and anyone else will just not. I did not like Iron Fist as mich as I thought I would but Defenders won me back.1 I do think that it's funny that everyone in the show thinks Iron Fist sucks but I'm really happy with the dynamic between him and Luke Cage. The first ~2 episodes moved at a strange pace because it was all the characters slowly coming together but after that I was pretty happy with it.

The Hand is still boring, though.

It starts well but ends kinda stupid. There are a whole bunch of head-slappingly dumb decisions that have to happen to get to the finale and the conclusion is telegraphed from a mile away. By the end, all the Kung Fu gets p dumb, especially when they explicitly say (several times) that the baddies are 'armed' but they all proceed to have a hand-to-hand fight instead.

I haven't gotten far into it but heard good things.

Heard a lot of bad things about Iron Fist, skipped it entirely. Then they led with Iron Fist.

That white boy has a yellow heck of a fist.

But Cage and Jones and DD showed up in the first two or three eps and it was a relief.

I think the show creators didn't get the message that a lot of people hated Iron Fist the same way you hate Kung Fu and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kung_Fu:_The_Legend_Continues

Show seems dece, but could they not have white-washed IF in the first place? And then ran with it as a series opener?

Dipping into this pool is a fool's errand but here we go:

White man learning ancient Asian mystic arts and then becoming the best at it is a lovely trope.
Yes the character has been a white dude forever but there was a golden opportunity that they missed:

Iron Fist is a title and the carrier of the power is not immortal. They could (should?) have made it a person of Asian decent. In fact, in the comics the new Iron Fist is a young Asian girl.

Edit: The problem maybe wouldn't have been such a big deal if:
1) Iron Fist wasn't such a godawful show
2) They didn't gently caress up casting The Ancient One in Dr. Strange.

What annoys me is that the actor who played the drunken fighter in the best fight scene in Iron Fist actually auditioned to play Danny. His name is Lewis Tan, and he's a half-British, half-Chinese actor, stuntman, and trained martial artist. He's a handsome dude and could have been much more interesting in the role than Finn Jones, especially if the show went with a biracial Danny Rand who didn't fully fit in or feel truly at home in New York or K'un Lun.

I thought white washing was when they make not white characters white? Don't get me wrong I'd be super down for them just making up all new characters and back stories because what I know of the pre-Danny Iron Fists there's some good stories to tell but instead we got Matt Murdock, Danny Rand, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones.

Although really what we need is an anthology ghost rider series because there was a WW1 biplane rider. Or the shark rider. The cowboy with his penance fist.

Yes, they didn't actually whitewash the character but they squandered a good opportunity to not have yet another boring white dude as a super hero.

My take is that, unless the character's race or gender is essential to their story, do whatever you want.
It worked for Ms. Marvel, Captain America, Spider-Man and Thor.
Plus, diversity and inclusion has been proven to be profitable in the long run.

Nationality didn't have anything to do with him being boring. Personally I don't care about the race of the character if it's a well written entertaining story. But, if you change the race, age, or sex of the character then you need to rewrite the character and give them an appropriate personality so it makes sense. But at the end of the day, boring is boring.

gently caress yeah.

It's something that hasn't been done a million billion times before and an underrepresented nationality is shown being skilled, not as some prop.

Having a white dude (who has the most privilege) start near the top (billionaire) and ALSO be the most skilled at another nation's tradition SUUUUUUUUCKS.

Her not being Asian worked in the character arc of Dr Strange, though, in that she was another white person butting into the monastery and abusing the powers within, and not abusing that power was a big part of Stranges character development. It's not like the movie opted to not cast minorities, look at Mordo and Wong.

E: Mordo even started as a white guy in the comics, actually, and they also took him from straight villain to someone with their own motivations.
