Music: Town (Day)

Today is a very important day - Gaius' birthday!

What?
...Because it's Gaius' birthday.

Curry Udon is one of his loved items, but there's something easier to give to him.

Too bad, you're getting a gift anyway!

Gaius' other loved items are platinum and gold. If you're really hard up for gifts, he merely likes the other ores(including scrap metal for some reason).

Getting this on my birthday, is there something you want to tell me...?
No, there isn't any deep meaning.
Yeah. I knew that.

With that out of the way, let's see what Marjorie wants.

I'm scared to even guess...Wheat sleeves? Pickle pants?
Or maybe it all comes full circle at that point and becomes "normal"!
Normal? You mean like wheat sleeves and pickle pants?
Okay, I guess not.
I guess it goes PAST full circle and becomes "abnormal" again!
If pickle pants are "abnormal," I don't want to BE normal!

I think this entire convo was just an excuse to say 'pickle pants.'

Oh, yes.
Well, Could you deliver this to Gaius?

Way to shove it into Link's hands before he has a chance to say yes or no.

Then again this is Link, so at worst he'd stutter a lot before agreeing to it anyway.

I see...Well, I'll go get this to him right now.
Oh, thank you. But, if you lose it...
Lose it...?
Well, Do something about it on your own.
I-I see...
Well now, Thank you for doing this for me.

Oh, that! I completely forgot about it.
Did you really remember just now?
Yes, it has something to do with Marjorie's prized possession..I have to be careful.
What's her prized possession?
I can't tell you that.
...
Anyway, I got it now. Could you let Marjorie know?
Ah...

Back in "I forgot to screenshot the first line of this conversation" land:

Oh, Link. It seems like you gave him the Toyherb.

Most important? Let's see...a container, I guess.
Container?
Oh. A wonderful container that will accept my heart.
...?
Anyway, thank you for today. This is for your trouble. Well now, thanks again.

I can't believe Gaius is repairing Marjorie's horcrux.

I think the mermaid would win this one by default, but maybe that's just me.

Well, I've put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears of my own into it. To meet cute monsters.
That's why?!

Now that we've beaten the third boss, Sakuya has a new feature for us!

Yes, it's a tradition from my homeland! I can tell you how your day will go! "Excellent" is the best reading, followed by "Great," "Good," "Average," and "Uncertain." However, if your reading is "Poor" or "Horrible," something bad will happen!
Wait...something bad?
Well, the chances of that are low, so I think it's worth the risk! I think so, at least.
Sounds, um, interesting.

Let's give it a whirl!

Um...Okay. It says "Good."
That means you'll have good luck today.
In what way, exactly?
Uh, try smashing rocks? It might go better than usual.
I see.

The other possible results are Excellent(higher spawn rate of treasure chests in dungeons), Great(higher rate of monster drops), Fishing Luck(fish bite more often), Average(easier time befriending monsters), Uncertain(no effect), Poor(you do less damage in combat), and Horrible(Sakuya takes an extra 800 gold from you). Money's easy enough to come by that I might as well get a fortune every day, but in reality I'm lazy and won't do it that often. :v:

Alvarna is the town from RF2. I have no clue what Lillyland is and google isn't helping either.

Ooo. I take a few. Sadly medicine bread isn't as useful as the other breads, simply because there aren't as many recipes to learn from it.

Next!

But first let's get distracted and buy a bunch of stuff from Evelyn.

All of the stuff sold here is for decorative purposes only.

But it's all pretty cheap, so hey, if you want to decorate, then decorate. I don't buy any of it though, since what I'm really here for is...

...new clothes.

Specifically, I'm going to make Link run around in a swimsuit and you can't stop me.

Although maybe I should have stopped myself.

I also pick up a blue outfit for when I inevitably get sick of running around in bright red swim trunks.

The swimsuit is the only outfit that changes Link's portrait, too. How is someone who mines, chops wood, fights monsters, and farms all the time so scrawny? Is this the power of anime?

Lean in close.
Uh, okay...
(It's about Evelyn's tears!)
EVELYN'S TEARS?!
Don't yell, you nincompoop!
Ah. Sorry about that. But why would you need me to investigate that?
I looked into Evelyn's room the other day and she was just bawling, tears streaming down her face in front of her workbench!
Do you know what she was upset about?
I know. But I thought we should go around town and ask some people. Think you could help? You can be my hard-boiled private investigator!
Well, not sure how "hard-boiled" I am. But I'll try. Do you have any leads?
Well, she was focused on her clothes. I'm sure that's partly the reason.
Well, that's not much to go on.
Let's ask around town. Someone must know something. Just don't blab that I saw Evelyn crying. Mum's the word!
Sure thing. Mum's the word.
Let's hit the road, P.I.!

I can already tell this is going to be a fantastic quest. :allears:

I really want one. Anyway, have you noticed anything different about Evelyn?
Different? I think she's coming up with even better design concepts. I might want to incorporate some in my own work! Right, Link?!
Danger...

Well, I mean, you are a grandpa...
Hmph, it's the same meaning.
Do you know anything about my sister?
Yes, she was growing a Ironleaf. You need a lot of patience for that one. I don't know why she did, but she's got a good eye for picking a Ironleaf.

But I think I saw her planting Ironleaf in front of her house.
That's Evelyn. I can't believe she was doing something so fun without me...
Sofia. Your legs are shaking.
She was worried they couldn't breathe, so she carefully pulled each one halfway out.
...

What? Let's see...oh! She said that she was growing Ironleaf for some inspiration on flower designs.
I see.
I wonder why she picked Ironleaf.

Because the world just wasn't ready for pickle pants?

She said she was going to grow more vegetables to make new outfits.
That's a usual conversation from her?
Yes...

That's even less helpful than what everyone else has been saying!

No.
I see.
...

I see...
Maybe you should ask someone who is close to her?
You may have a point. Thank you, innkeeper.

Nah, let's keep asking the entire town.

Wait, did she start selling to another store?! What's going on?!
No, please calm down.

Not even close.
We wanted to ask you about Evelyn--
FISH AREN'T CLOTHING MATERIAL!
Can't disagree with you there.

Why isn't Evelyn growing Ironleaf in our garden? Is it all part of her vile plot to prevent me from sneaking in food?
That's a pretty smart plan, actually.

...does Sofia actually know anyone's name?

Lemme think...she's ice-cold with the zingers. I got served the other day.
Uh, that doesn't really help us.

Oh, no. I'm just getting hungrier!!
Sous-chef! A query. Have you seen Evelyn?
What?! I didn't eat Evelyn! Speaking of Evelyn, do you have 11 helpings of chicken on you, Sofia?
Your appetite never ceases to amaze me! It's so very annoying!
Uh, is that a compliment?
I think so...but maybe not.

Did you notice anything strange about her behavior?
Not especially. She cast an anti-poison spell on my food, like she always does.
Does that actually work?
It's for peace of mind. Evelyn explained it to me one time. Basically, it's to ensure my innocence in the event of a poisoning.
She's got good intentions.
Yeah, she does. She just doesn't need to go to all that trouble.
I don't think I ever knew that about Evelyn.

We're really not getting any leads here, are we?

Did you want another shot?!
Y-Yes!
I knew it! Then let's--
W-Wait! I just came to ask about Evelyn--
I know! Evelyn never comes around, but you like shots, don't you, Sofia?
I love them!
Okay, just roll up your sleeve--

In retrospect Marian was probably a bad person to ask.

I don't know! I only look at Carmen!
...

Have you noticed anything normal about Evelyn lately?
That's a good question. When I called to her when I went fishing...
She said that if I caught a big one, she could use it as clothes. Yes. So, nothing strange.
I see...
...

Evelyn was crying in front of her workbench.
Huh? Is it okay just telling her?
It's only Karina.
Well, she did mention making pants for someone. (Or I thought...)
Oh.
What is it, Link? Wait, did you--
No. Do you think that's the thing Gaius ordered?
The iron man?
Yes. I helped gather materials with her the other day.
Very suspicious.
Well, let's go see Gaius.

Before we go, let's talk to Evelyn for shits and giggles.

Evelyn?! I-It's nothing!
Help me out here, Link!
Uh, yeah. Like she said. Nothing. And there's nothing between us.
Okay. But you guys look awfully suspicious. You've got that whole "private investigator" fashion going today.

Wait, Gaius isn't at the blacksmith's? Hmm.

In fact, he's nowhere in town. Instead...

...he's off in the desert. In the middle of a typhoon, no less. (:rip: my crops)

I find an elusive desert tomato on the way.

Music: Gaius' Theme

We've been looking for you, Iron Man!
Huh? Oh, to see me? Well, how about we go back to my shop and talk.
There's no time for that!
Sofia, calm down. What are we gonna solve chatting all the way out here in the desert?
...Fine. Lead the way, Iron Man.

Well, we were just--

I've been looking all over town for you! Sorry for the wait. Your outfit's finally done!

Well that's certainly not the dread most people have towards her outfits!

Oh, Sofia. I didn't see you there.
That outfit!
What about it!
That's the same outfit I saw from before! I saw her, Iron Man! She was sprawled out on her workbench, bawling her eyes out!
Bawling...? Oh, yeah. I guess I was. It's because I was using Onions.
Onions?!
Onions?! Then you weren't crying over Iron Man?
Why would I cry over Gaius? We're good friends. Nothing more than that.

:smith:

Anyway, I'm in a rush. I need to get this outfit to Gaius before it spoils!
What's the point of an outfit that spoils?

Well, see you later!
Wait, something still seems odd here...

Also we now own one of those monkey things from Evelyn's outfit.

What's that?

In between the scene before and the one in this update, it really seems like Sofia's character quirk is the most actively harmful to her. I mean, unless it turns out Pia can't actually breathe air or something, she's got it the worst.

Perhaps Evelyn is secretly the sharpest person in town? I mean, unless Link and Sofia were wearing trenchcoats and fedoras and had bubble pipes in their hands, most of the rest of the townsfolk wouldn't notice that they seemed to be investigating something.

Indeed. It was decreed by my ancestors, comrade.
So...if you could've chosen a career, what do you think you would've done?
That's easy. I'd own a cake shop!
You can't eat your inventory, you know.
Hmm...You've got a point. I might have to reconsider, then.

I'm not sure what's stopping Kuruna from owning a cake chop and settlement elder-ing, what with her being in charge of a whopping two other people and all.

Alright, Shara time.

Not-really-random aside: I know I've been stalling on putting up a marriage poll, but that's because all these bachelorette quests are their heart events. You have to finish a girl's quest chain(which sometimes includes doing quests from a different character, in this case doing some of Monica's quests to advance Shara's questline) to marry her. You also have to get further in the main plot that I am right now before marriage is an option, so there's no real point in voting now.

She's still just a child, but she seems a little more grown up. Oh, and she wouldn't stop talking about you. She's "Link did this," and "Link likes that." So much so that it almost made me jealous.
Aw, shucks.
Really, I couldn't have imagined seeing her like this at all. Really, thank you so much.
Oh, no, I couldn't have done it without your help. You're giving me too much credit.
I'm glad to hear you say that. And now, I have a gift for you.
Oh, I don't need anything.
But it's not here.
...?!
I gave it to Monica to hold. Why don't you go see her, Prince?
Th-That again...?

Yup!! I baked it with Shara.
That's great. I can cook, too.
Heh heh. But Shara's better, so I'm going to have her teach me lots! I'll let you have some of my next batch!
Okay, thanks.

Surprise. The reward is cake.

Wow. I want one.
Heh heh. But you can't have it.

Rude.

Also what item she found is randomly generated each time she shows it. Where the hell is she wandering?

...

Later dungeon=higher tier gems. That's all you really need to remember.

But my sister's room is off limits. Got it? Bro'.
Ha ha ha...
I'm always here if you need to talk. But our walls are thin. Ha ha ha!

Thanks, Carlos.

Is that a compliment?
...The greatest.
What?!

I'm pretty sure Gaius' crush on Evelyn is the entire reason she's not a marriage candidate. Link could never bring himself to be that much of a monster.

Oh poo poo, are we finally going to make him eat his goddamned vegetables? I'm in.

The minimap spoils the fact that he's up in this tree after starting the quest. Hmm.

Riiiight.

You know how Rusk doesn't like vegetables, right? He pretty much only eats pastries!
Well, everyone has different tastes. What's so wrong with that?

He's going to die of various vitamin deficiencies?

He's a vegicist! We need to fix that! So I made him a scrum-diddly-umptious veggie surprise, but now there's a problem!
What? He didn't like it?
No! I can't even find him to force the veggie surprise down his throat!
Well, I think that's on you! You did post the request on the bulletin board for all to see!
Find that vegicist! Drag his hide back here so I can administer legumic justice!
I'm not sure Rusk is gonna like this too much...but you asked so nicely, so I'll do it for you!

Still more ethical than Marian's requests.

Nah, I'm his doppelganger.
Sure you are, buddy. Hey, Collette's looking for you?
Is that so? News to me.
But she went out of her way to cook something for you? Could you try it? Even just one bite?
Lemme think about it. I'm full.
(It's no use. I should tell Collette he's being stubborn.)

Yes. He said he was full.
*sigh* It was no use? Sorry, Link.
It's okay. (...I'll go see him one more time!)

Dammit Rusk.

Listen, Rusk. This isn't for me. I don't care if you don't like vegetables or not. But it would really make Collette feel good if you'd try out her veggie surprise.
Hmm... Your suggestion will be taken under advisement. Weighing the pros and cons...fine, I'll do it. I hope Collette's happy.
Really?! Awesome!
But just one bite. No more.
That's good enough! Collette's gonna go nuts!

Rusk ate the whole thing! How did you do it?!
What, really?!
I'm so happy. Thank you so much!
Collette...Rusk didn't eat it all because of me.
What?
Rusk said he'd have "one bite". Either he ate the whole thing because he loves you or your cooking was really good. I'm not sure which.
I see. Maybe I pushed him too hard.
Thank you, Link. I learned something important today. Here, this is for everything. Take it. Link, thank you for today. I'll post something again sometime.
Okay.

Remember kids, eat your vegetables or else you'll be a soulcrushing disappointment to everyone around you! But don't try to force other people to eat vegetables, that would be just be rude.

A more than acceptable reward. Note that this applies to level-up xp only, not skill xp. Which...is only kinda useful, since your equipment does a lot more for your stats than your level does. But hey, every little bit helps.

That's correct! I need to question your tastes now...

>They're a little...different.

Poppycock! Evelyn's fashions are impeccable! But she's so indifferent! She should really have her own fashion week!
You don't need to cover for Evelyn like that, Sofia.
Ahem! What are you accusing me of?!

This is a star pendant. It menaces with spikes of iron. (And whatever other stuff I stapled to it so it'd be better than my current accessory)

I also make a hammer while I'm crafting. I might as well level multiple weapon skills when I have the time.

The rest of the day is spent fishing...

...and getting surprisingly goot loot by dungeoneering. Or it would be if I cast spells more than once in a blue moon. Oh well, free stat point is free stat point.

The next day:

I should probably be fishing more regularly instead of cramming in long days of fishing before contests.

But for now, Daria.

Well, I haven't really been waiting too long.
No, I didn't think so. And who are you introducing me to?
Heh heh heh...I name it...The Daria Rainbow Tour!
What? What is that?
Link, you need more art education. That's why I will show you around my art pieces in Privera Forest!
You were talking about them?! No, thanks...I don't want people to think I'm an accomplice.
Accomplice? What? Anyway, don't be so modest! Now come, my assistant!

Link's already been an accomplice to worse things than art. What's the worst that could happen?

Talking to Daria again lets you know how many stops are left on the art tour. Handy, since it's easy to miss a few and wonder why the quest isn't ending.

Music: Privera Forest

Did she forget or something?

The stuff immediately outside her own house counts, by the way. Even this does, iirc. (It's a nondescript statue conveniently blocked by the text box, in case you're wondering)

It's an expression of ennui. Heh heh heh.
I don't see anything.

The stuff inside her house doesn't count, but some of her reactions are pretty good.

Not usually, anyway.
Not usually?!

This chest is filled with some of her favorite foods. There was actually a miso eggplant in there too, but I found that many, many updates ago and forgot there was more in here.

What?!

I give one of the dishes back to her for easy affection points. Because that's definitely how things would realistically work.

But enough fooling around - back to the tour!

You're asking me?

You think?!

I think that might be important.

It was just a normal pole, which was boring. So I chiseled faces and flowers into it!
Now it's so cute.

Th-thank you...

Yes, that bridge she built way back when counts as one of the art installation. :allears:

One of the treasure chests I find while running around has this in it. I'd complain about the game putting a damper on the need to forge, but hey, free higher-tier weapons.

The tour won't go on if Daria's knocked out, by the way. She's not that dedicated.

It's getting late and I'm still missing one. :argh: Unfortunately Daria won't tell you where any of them are, so I have to search the hard way.

I eventually find it and Daria promptly blocks the view of it with her dialogue portrait.

The other is "Sunset Nako". It represents...something about this world.
You're leaving something out.

And you have to talk to Daria before she'll realize the quest is done.

Whew...it's finally over.
What do you think? Did you learn a lot?
Oh, yes. V-Very much...
Very good! Well, I'll show you when I make a new one!
I-I see.
Here, this is your bodyguard fee. Bye then.
(I just...don't get art.)

I started this quest at 9:48 am. Maybe I should have used a guide to find the art quicker?

Nah.

I decide to get that second cluckadoodle, but quickly realize it doesn't react at all when I try to bribe it into slavery a fair labor agreement where I take its daily produce for free, control where it goes and what it does, and have the option of killing it sending it back to the forest of beginnings if I get bored with it.

It won't join because my barn's full. Oops. At least it left a medium egg behind when I rage-killed it?

I guess I'll have to fix that problem tomorrow. Or not tomorrow. Eventually.

Oh, uh...never you mind that! It's not important. And the Hornless are still evil.
Okay. You know, you're kinda cute when you crave Hornless food, though.
I do?!
Uh, I mean, don't joke around about the Hornless! They are no laughing matter!
Sorry about that.
Anyway, Hornless food is separate from the Hornless. I mean, I'm basically using the Hornless' own food to fight against them!
Yeah, I guess you could look at it that way. Well, let me know if you need seconds!
I will. Thank you so much, comrade.
You know, if you're using the Hornless' food, aren't they your "comrades" as well?
No! Never! The Hornless are evil! They have no redeeming qualities! ...Except their food.

She's tearin' through that just like Collette would...

No, it's just hard to walk around in the rain as a mermaid. But I don't hate it. In fact, I love water! It feels so good, and it's SO pretty!
Stop looking at me like I'm nutso!
No, I'm just surprised! Let's head out to Oddward:Cavern Pond, then.
Yippee!

The pond is in an easy-to-miss room right by the cave field.

...and the event takes place in a chunk of land inaccessable by foot. I guess Link can only swim off-camera.

See?! It is! But don'tcha think it's weird-ish?
What do you mean?
When I was in the sea, I was always looking up. Everyone looks down at the water, but I was looking up at the lights. But now, I'm the one looking down at the water. And it's crowbar-across-the-face beautiful!
That's an, uh, interesting way of putting it. But I agree, Pia.

So, you came all the way out here just for me?
Of course!
I like you. A lot. A LOT LOT LOT LOT LOT! Like, white-hot-comet-in-the-sky like!
Uh, could you translate?
About as much as I like Sakuya and Shino! And as much as I like baths!
Ah. That means a lot, then!
Rain's a hassle, but I don't hate it. I hate squid, but I love how they taste!
What are you getting at?
It's never "either or" with me! I'm always somewhere in the middle! Are you sure you can handle that?

Why are you so nonchalalanla--uh, laid back about it?
Because I'm just like you, Pia.
You're...a mermaid?

I'm half-monster. So I'm neither completely human nor totally monster.

That is what words mean, yes.

...
Are you scared, Pia?
I'm terrified!
I knew it.

Music: Comedy

I'm terrified of what'll happen if I don't HUG you!
Uh, wait! You'll crush me!
It's SQUEEZIN' TIME!

Flufftastic! Cute-riffic! SQUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUEEZE!
At least...I can...die...happy. Relatively.
You deserve to get squeezed HARDER! *SMOOSH*
Pia's...hugs...are true...weapons...of war...

:rip:

Sorry about that?
Really sorry?
It's okay, Shino. She didn't mean it
Well, if you say so, Link...
Thanks!
(By the way, Pia. Keep our little conversation a secret!)
Sure! You were so CUTE!
Uh, what did I just TELL you not to discuss?!
What are you two talking about?
Nothing!
Curious! Tell me: What were you two doing alone together...?
Just...hangin' out!
Link's thing was SO cute!

Music: Pinch

Goddammit Pia. I guess we're gonna die now.

Shut up, Pia!
His...thing was cute? Don't know what that's supposed to mean, but okay! Oh, Link! I was thinking of sharpening my sword!
Wh-What does that have to do with me and Pia?!
Oh. I was just wondering if I should ask you or Gaius.
Oh, never mind. I don't have anywhere to put the sword, anyway. Forget I said anything.
Well...just keep your sword away from me and Pia!
Anyway, thanks for cheering up Pia. Here's a little something for your trouble! But if anything untoward should happen to Pia...
*GULP* I don't wanna see that sword!

We're alive! For now.

My prize is a sword that'll be even better than my current one once it's fully upgraded.

Let's do something less likely to get us brutally murdered after a comical misunderstanding.

Music: Home

What?! Are you saying that I'm not allowed to use the bulletin board?!
I-I never said that...So, did something happen?
I want to give the present Shara gave me to Shara!
You want to return the gift to her?
Nooooooo! I want you to give her the same thing she got me!
Ah, so you want to be matching.
Yup!! Shara said that she picked it up in Privera Forest, but I can't go there.
Alright, so I'll go get it for you.
Really?! Are you gonna be OK by yourself?
Yeah, I'll be fine.
Yeah, I guess you should be able to handle that much at least.
Ha ha...So, what did you get from Shara?
This!

Okay, a Amethyst(sic). Okay. Just wait here, I'll go find one.
Thanks. The sooner the better!

After a harrowing adventure back home and to his storage box, Link successfully locates an amethyst.

Yay!! Here! This is for you! Thank you, Link.
You're welcome.
Now Shara and I are a match! I hope Shara likes it.

Our prize is a cookie. I'll take it.

She had nothing interesting enough to screenshot today other than this RF2 reference.

The first barn expansion is comically cheap. Which suits me just fine, because I have a second Cluckadoodle to get(eventually).

Just Eat It

Music: Summer

Another short one today to make up for how much I've been slacking.

Despite all the typhoons, I'm still managing to get some crops out of this season. Not as many as I'd like, but it'll have to do.

Also it's the worst character's birthday today. :geno:

Against my better judgement, I give her a pumpkin.

And...well, Marjorie's the quest-giver here, so we probably won't die or be turned into an ant or something. Probably.

Yes. But are you sure? Inviting me to eat with you...
Yes, I'm sure. You've taken care of Marian so well. Just--Could you bring a Omelet, a Rice, and a Ketchup?

If that sounds like a bizarre dinner menu to you, just know it's a Japanese food thing.

What? Um, weren't you going to treat me to dinner?
Everyone here is like family to me. So I'm just asking my family to chip in a little bit.
I-Is that how it is?
It is. Now, come back when you've got the ingredients.

So, there's a couple problems here. The first is that we need tomatoes and onion to make ketchup. The second, and much more annoying one, is that we need the same size of milk and egg to make an omelet. My Buffamoo are already making medium milk, but my newly recruited Cluckadoodle is still only laying small eggs, so making an omelet is impossible until medium eggs start happening.

I can't believe it took until RF4 for someone to go "wait, can't we just have it accept any size of milk/egg for the ingredient slot instead of having three different omelet recipes?"

Since that quest is getting backburnered indefinitely, let's see what Sherman wants today.

I'm not having a sudden craving for some sandfish dish.
Sandfish dish?
Actually, I didn't ask the chef, too.
You asked Blaise, too? Then there's no reason that I need to...
But Link, I don't have high hopes in your cooking ability.
So you want to compare my cooking with Blaise's?
No. So please hurry and don't make Fried S. Flounder.
Okay. I'll do what I can!
That's not the spirit! Now, bad luck!

To the desert, then!

Sand flounders can be fished out of the desert sands. Just roll with it.

Then fry it.

Please, enjoy.
Of course! *chomp chomp smack*!
Yes, it is disgusting! Too disgusting!

Seconds please!!

But, really...my opinion is that the chef's dishes are more horrible.
I see...
But...it was really bad. I don't thank you.
Sherman...
And no congratulations to you, Link.
What?
You're a chef now too, Link. This is from me. It's not something special.

:stwoon:

Don't improve!
Okay! Thank you very much!
By the way...since when am I trying to become a chef?
...
...

Who cares if Sherman's trying to make us a chef, do you see how well the man pays?

So you did...

Yes, you can learn weapon techniques if a runey skill up procs the right skill at the right time. I'll show off the ultimate spear move eventually, but I'm having too much fun with this overpowered sword for now.

Time to bribe a chicken into slavery.

Love me.

LOVE ME.

Koo koo kachoo.

For some bizarre reason, Walrus immediately lays a large egg in the barn. But after today he goes back to laying small eggs like I expected. It's baffling and also doesn't help me with making an omelet.

The next day...

tl;dr: Everyone will be selling stuff tomorrow. What Wells doesn't tell you is that a few people will be trading items for other items, and there's actually a trading chain to help you get some of the really good stuff.

This ought to be good.

That's it? Okay.
Do you have any dreams?
Dreams...? Do you, Daria?
Yes...I do.
What kind of dream?
I...want to build a castle.
A castle?
That's right. A giant castle bigger than the Sharance Tree.
And what will you do once you build it?
Good question! I, I! I want to look out at the world.
The...world...?

Phrase repeated as a question?

When I was little, my dad took me to a large tower in the city. And the view...was amazing. Everything seemed. so close, yet so far away.
...?
Anyway, it was amazing! That's why I want to capture the world with my art.
You seem...like you're out for world domination.
Well, this is still far in the future. Right now, I want to make art pieces.
Let me know if there's anything I.can help you with. I would like to help.
Link...Okay. No take backs.
What?!
Let's stock up! 10,000 pieces of lumber!

Somewhere, LordHippoman is waking up in a cold sweat.

Whaaaaaaat?!
I'm kidding, ha ha.
O-Oh.
But maybe I'll take 20 or so.
So you are asking me for some.
Now go, my assistant!

That's like three stumps of wood. Why not just lumberjack it yourself? :colbert:

OK OK, fine.

This was nothing compared to 10,000.
The castle's name will be "Link Rainbow Tower".
Ha ha...oh, stop.
Thanks, Link. I'm really happy that you helped me.come closer to my dream...
...?! What's the matter?! Why are you suddenly so timid? What?! What?! Another face of Daria?!
How rude! I only have the one! And what's so wrong...if I'm a little...

D--?! Daria?!
Oh shush. Let me speak.

Thank you for everything today. You can tell me your dream next time.

Quest rewards get a tiny bit ridiculous as you get further along each quest chain.

Vegetables: Will Rusk eat them?

I know that...I can't stay this way.
I see.
So I thought I'd try one.in a sweet first. So, please, Link. Could you bring me any kind of vegetable to me?
Okay. You want me to bring you a vegetable.
Yes. Thanks.

I already had a tomato on me, so might as well.

Thanks...I'll do my best to eat it.
Good luck.
Here, this is for everything. Well, bye then.

Oh hey, something to make crops grow faster. I abuse the hell out of these in RF4(where they affect a plot of up to 9 crops), but they're considerably less worth it in RF3 since they only apply to a single crop. But hey, free is free.

Incidentally, since Pia knows our deal now, we can talk to her normally in our Wooly form. Whoopee.

Labelling text boxes properly is hard.

While I'm doing herb/grass gathering things in Privera Forest, I accidentally recruit a Pomme Pomme.

Pomme Pommes are bad at fighting and don't produce anything, but there's no reason to release it unless I need the space. So Ringo gets to stay and be forgotten about.

I've also used up some antidote grass so I can get rid of some of these annoying poison plots. They're not that hard to avoid & poison is really easy to cure, but they're still annoying.

I'm pretty sure I've shown off Raven's diary before, which only had this entry in it earlier. But now that she likes us more, she's written more!

Flea Market

Music: Festival

Today's the Flea Market, which is one of the most involved festivals(relatively speaking) in the game. Everyone in town will be selling stuff, or trading stuff for other stuff, or playing games in exchange for stuff. And I mean everyone. There's also a trading chain to get the top-tier stuff, which you'll see in due time.

20 gold a pop? Clearly garbage. :colbert:

Gee, if we can't trust Daria, who CAN we trust? Let's do this!

I've been bamboozled.

Let's try again!

Sensing a trend? There is a very small chance of getting something good, but I'll show that off later.

Hopefully the small child is more trustworthy.

1 win is a veggie and recipe bread, 2 wins is a flower seed, 3 wins is "a nice tonic", 4 wins is a farm tool, and 5 is the secret prize. I know what I'm aiming for. Savescum powers activate!

The rules aren't all that complicated. Prepare your favorite sacrifice to the RNG, and get going.

Feel free to consult the Rock Paper Scissors LP if you don't understand how to play.

Repeat 4 times...

*sniffle*
I-I'm sorry...
*chomp*!!
Owwww!

So yeah, the secret prize is getting bitten. I'll take the 4 win prize instead, since farming string for the fishing poles is a pain in the rear end.

Shara's selling a couple things that normally don't show up in her store until the fourth dungeon is done. They're also ridiculously cheap compared to normal.

BUY BUY BUY

(The emery flower is a spring flower, and the pom pom grass is a fall flower.)

For Flea Market, our resort opens a stall we call "Carmen's Paradise". Pay up front, then you get to see what gift you've bought! You might find a real bargain! How about it? Interested, right?
Not really...
Well, don't sweat the small stuff!

Might as well go for it.

Alright! That's more like it. Well then, you've got three choices. Which do you want?

Naturally I'm going to use the power of ~magic~ to see all three.

Top Gift is okay, I guess.

Special Gift is cake.

And Token Gift is a ring.

I go with Special Gift since cake is worth the most. Seriously, look at that price!

Carmen's running her own version of Carmen's Paradise.

The fished item is, shockingly, a fish.

The mystery item is some generic crafting stuff.

And the sparkly item(and also the one I settle for) is a ruby.

Rusk sells exactly what you expect, but with a twist.

It's all being sold cheap enough that you can flip it for a tidy profit.

Eat it? Why would we do that? Link gets to cram alarming amounts of simple dishes down his throat for his daily Eating skill points.

Cheap ore? Don't mind if I do.

Marjorie's where those trades I mentioned come in. I don't have the ability to make any of those dishes yet, but I can get two of them from trades around town. And I definitely want those items, since stat boosts and all.

Marian is less than amused if you bullshit her about her own(seemingly terrible) trade.

This is the same deal as Rusk's food, where all of it's being sold for less than we can sell it, but the Curry Rice should be saved to trade for Invincroid instead.

Golden seeds are ridiculously rare. So naturally I'm going to buy both of them. (and not plant them now, because typhoons. The summer ones can go in the desert once typhoon season is over.)

Pia sells some stuff, but also has a trade that makes Marian's trade less ridiculous.

And Sakuya is conveniently selling a Raccoon Leaf for people who don't happen to have one lying around.

Trade chain, go!

No time to be alarmed, gotta get this heavy spice over to Pia.

No, thank you.

Sherman is the only person in town not selling or trading anything. How rude.

Why yes, that IS completely ridiculous. So it'll probably sit in the "too awesome to consider using" pile, but hey, I have it!

The love potion is...interesting. I'll show it off later.

Raven's selling accessories. I grab a scarf because why not.

:geno:

A second use of Heavy Spice appears.

It doesn't actually help in any trade chains, but whatever, I'll take it.

All three of these are pretty good. The critical ring gives increased chance of critical hits, and the silent/paralyze rings grant resistance to seal/paralysis while giving you a chance to seal/paralyze foes yourself.

Evenlyn's got a backup option for getting a raccoon leaf, along with some other goodies. I go with the Platinum since it's in short supply right now.

Same deal as Rusk and Collette's stores.

Cheap seeds, cheap food, and some greenifier I'll probably use at some point.

After many, many, many tries, I get a non-trash item out of Daria's lottery. It's not worth it. At all. Daria, I normally like you, but gently caress you. :argh:

With all the Flea Market stuff taken care of, let's check in on the settlement.

Fascinating. :geno:

Back to town to do a simple request.

tl;dr: Mystery person left this trash here.

I take everything because even the literal trash is worth a gold or two.

Once the Flea Market's done, everyone will talk about how well their stuff sold. Most of it is boring variations on "I sold a lot!".

So let's timeskip to tomorrow and do a Karina quest.

For added comedy, it's a hurricane today.

What? Where?
Privera Forest. Of course.
Wait, why?
Because.
What?
Oh...umm...(I probably shouldn't say.)
Come on. You can tell me.
Well, I want to practice.
Practice?
Yeah, if I want to get to the city, it's going to take a lot of walking. So I need to get ready for that.
You need me to help you practice walking?
Hey, there's some dangerous stuff in Privera Forest. (Monsters are such a pain.)
Ah.
Yeah. I'll do the walking. You take care of the monsters for me.
But won't you have to deal with monsters if you travel to the city?
Oh, I'll worry about that later. So could you get me to Privera:The Eye, then?

Why can't she practice walking around town? Oh well, who cares, let's get this over with.

Music: Privera Forest

This is the literal first screen of the dungeon.

What?! This is just the entrance.

What he said.

Oh. Really? (Who would have thought that the wilderness was so...big?)
Isn't there some kind of carriage service that we could take there instead?
I don't think so. Let's go.
Fine. (I guess I can get used to walking...Maybe.)

If this game was set in the modern era, Karina would live in her mom's basement and only emerge for pizza deliveries.

We've made it all the way to the second screen in the dungeon! Karina just might make it!

At this rate, we're never going to get there.
Yeah, I know. (Maybe I should give up on this "walking" concept.)

Oh no! Now Link's become the tutorial! :derp:

Hmmm. (Oh, I know...) How do you collect ore? Could you show me?
What? I guess I can.
Thanks. I'll just watch.
Okay.
(Now I get a break.)

A small amount of mining later...

Yeah, thanks. (It's over already?) Hm...
Hey! Isn't that an Apple tree?
What?

Those apples look tasty. Could you get me one?
You could get it yourself, you know.
But my legs are tired. Please?
*sigh*

You know, as easy as it is to hate on Marian, Karina's an almost equal(but more low-key) terrible. Who the hell wrote all this and went "yes, this is a character that players will want to interact with as one of the possible marriage choices"?

(I hope it's someplace with a bench.)
...
(There isn't going to be a bench, is there?)
Don't worry, Karina.
Hm?
It's just a little farther.
Oh...(That was nice of him.)
Okay. I can make it.
Okay! Let's go, then.

(As long as it's only a little farther...)

I see...(I'm so tired.)

(And the city is even farther than this?)
...Maybe the town isn't so bad. (I'd never make it to the city.)
Well, that's one way to make your decision.

That was a real adventure. Here's your reward for being such a good guide.

You're no Sherman, Karina.

Thanks for today. (I guess it went okay.) Well, see you later.

Good riddance. Let's go talk to more interesting characters.

Yes...since it was the first thing.
What?
Making pendants. It's what Gaius first taught me how to make.
I see.

To cook?
No, silly! To make socks!
I...don't even want to know how you'd go about that.

Squid are mine! Watch out! The squid's days...
are numbered.
So suddenly?!

Link delivers the brutal truth.

I had a feeling it was a defect...I can't help it, though!

Have you tried developing character traits that don't involve food?

I'm running out of ways to say "here's the next quest."

I'll tell you when we get there. Well, let's go to Privera:Lightway.
?

Well, there was actually someone.that helped me around here.
What?!

Link is just the best at keeping secrets.

Oh, umm...
Hmmm...
And its wool was gold, so I thought I could shave it.
Shave it?!
Yes. I've never seen a golden wooly before. I'm sure its wool would fetch a high price.
Yes...That's...true...
What's the matter? You don't look well.
I-I'm fine.
Okay then. But I don't see that golden wooly anywhere.
Yeah.

But thou mustn't.

(I could shave myself...?) (That's just, too...Anything but that!)
I thought golden wooly wool would fetch a high price...

(You can't buy pride with money...) (I'll pretend I didn't hear her...)

I seriously have to wonder how traumatic shaving is for this to be the one thing Link grows a backbone over.

I've decided I'm not going home until we find that golden wooly!

Seems like it'll be cold tonight...
What?
Oh, well...umm...you mind waiting a second?
Okay...?

Nobody will ever piece together this puzzle.

Oh.

Link & Sakuya conveniently go offscreen so nobody has to animate any of this. Tell, don't show.

S-Stop right there!

The game doesn't even provide portraits.

...You're just a regular wooly, aren't you?
?!
I mean, of course he is.
B-Bah...(That scared me.)
Alright. Well, we'll start here.
B..ah...! (Ah, it's cold.)
Now, this side...This is harder than I thought.
... (It tickles.)
Alright, now this side.
Ba?! Bah bah bah...?! (Wait, if she shaves this much...)
Hm?
Bah!! (Noooo!)
Hey, if you don't stop fighting...S-Stop! Where are you touching?!
B-Bah...?! (Wait, I didn't mean to...)
Honestly, you naughty little...! I'll shave you bald as punishment!
Baaaaaaaaaah!

Yeah, this should be enough.

Where did you run off to?
I just...had a thing...
You don't look well, did something happen?
Well, just something that really cut me to the core.
Hmmm...Oh, anyway! Look!
Tadaaa! I found the golden wooly and shaved it.
Oh, yeah.
Where's your enthusiasm?
What?! O-Oh, I just wish I could've seen him too...
I see.
...
Oh, well. Anyway, thanks for today. Here's just a token of my appreciation. Hope I can count on you again.
Y-Yeah.

The real reward is the trauma you endured along the way.

So you think about the opposite words before saying them?
You've got me pegged!
I'm...even more confused now. By the way, Sofia, would you like to go somewhere sometime?

A rare appearance of the portrait parasol!

There was a book that I loved in my youth. There was a courageous hero who wore a cape much like mine. Wearing this cape...It still makes me feel like a hero sometimes.
(Wow. I didn't expect that!)

One thing I somehow haven't shown off until now is that you can refight bosses to farm their drops.

They don't tend to last very long when you're several dungeons ahead of them.

"This beast that was threatening the settlement is here again all of a sudden. Okay."

I try fighting Skelefang in human form since I can do that now, but the timing's all off for its attack patterns. At least they tuned it really well for the mandatory woolyform fight?

It's 1AM by the time it goes down, so the update ends here.

Bosses have at least one(sometimes more) random drops, generally with powerful(relative to when the boss is) crafting effects. There are also some recipes that require specific drops.

For instance the Raccoon drops Raccoon Leafs, which are ATK+8 DEF+7 INT-6(aka 'pretty nuts for the first & most of the second dungeon', and still nice now if you're not casting a whole lot), Amaranthine and Crimsone drop furs that boost magic/physical attack by a lot(double what I can get from ores right now) and magic/physical defense by a little, etc.

Is that...cake?
Uh...no?
DO NOT LIE TO ME, COMRADE! IT IS YOUR PATRIOTIC DUTY TO EAT CAKE WITH ME!
I'm pretty sure that's not part of my patriotic.duty, Kuruna.
It's uh...in the fine print!

Yes, Link was definitely eating cake first thing in the morning. Brilliant deduction, Kuruna. (I wouldn't have him eat cake anyway, it's far too valuable. :v:)

I'm not very picky. What about you?
Me? Let's see...I like juice.

A reminder that Ondorus exists and is a Univir of simple tastes.

Back in Humantown, word's spreading that we beat the last boss.

She was just smiling away while I was really depressed. Next thing I notice, we're walking back to town together, both of us smiling.

:kimchi:

What?!

Pia: Still Pia.

I decide to buy the double bed & bookshelf while I'm thinking about it. I'll need the double bed to get married once that's even an option(it's plot-locked and relatively late in the plot). I don't really need the bookshelf(it just stores extra rune abilities and spells), but might as well while I'm here.

...the ones I bought a few updates ago are made from regular fabric, right?

She told me never smile, so I'm just practicing that...
...You're doing it knowing it's opposite, aren't you?
...
But you're so much cuter when you smile.
...

Not even RF3 is safe from the dreaded "why aren't you smiling? you should smile more. you look better when you smile."

This sounds like a terrible idea. Let's do it!

Music: Home

Sorry to keep you waiting. Is Collette helping too?
Nope. I just fell, so Marian was treating me.
You're asking Marian?!
She's like a moth to the flame.
I see. Does that include me as a victim?
What? What do you mean?
I don't have time for that today!
Something happen?
Grandma took away my syringe! She said it was increasing patients instead of decreasing them.

Finally, a sensible response to Marian's...Marian-ing.

She's right about that.
Anyway! Now I can't work! I need to get it back.
(So that means...) Hey, Marian. Just prove to Marjorie that your magic is good. If you can use solid magic, Marjorie will have to let you do as you like.
What?!
Of course! I see, this is a test of my abilities! Now I'm fired up!
That's great, Marian. (If her magic succeeds, she won't need to be giving shots anymore.)

This is the most sensible Marian quest we've had yet. What's the catch?

Let's get going! C'mon, Link!

Sol Terrano:Star Dunes.

Around here? It may just be a sea of sand, but...

Where did you even get that from?

R-Really?

Mushrooms don't even spawn in this dungeon! :argh:

You're not just picking up random objects, are you?

I don't even want to know.

That much?!
Alright! I think this should be enough!
Is it really going to be okay...?
Now! Back to the apothecary!
...

:gonk:

Huh?!
Now for some magic!
Wait a minute!

Grandma! Perfect timing. I'm almost done! And no syringes today. It's just magic, like a real witch.
I see. This is quite a poison.
Poison?!
What?! That can't be!
You think I can't tell?
...
Did you forget? You promised not to make medicine without me.
Oh...That's because I--
Regardless, you didn't keep your promise to me, now did you? And if they'd drunk this, they probably wouldn't have survived.
What?! Oh, no...I'm sorry...
You don't think saying sorry is going to resolve the issue, do you?

In any other game, this is where Marian would stop being a hazard to life and limb. But this is Rune Factory, so she's not going to learn a damned thing.

...
Well...I'm so sorry...Link.
No, this was my fault anyway.
You got really lucky this time around. Might not be so lucky next time around. Silly Marian.
Yes.
... (I should go home.)

What? Why sorry, Collette?
If I had said something, this wouldn't have happened, right?
What do you mean?
Marian's syringe doesn't increase her magic, it controls it.
What?!
Marian's magic is way more powerful than Marjorie's. But she can't control it quite yet, so she uses that syringe to somehow manage.
I see.
Marian didn't mean to do any harm. Please believe me.

That still doesn't make it okay! :argh:

Okay. I'll have to be careful too.
Oh, this is from Marjorie.

What?
She really has lots of good traits too!

Such as?

I hope you guys can still be friends!
Yeah, okay. Don't worry, I understand. Thanks.

That's a pretty damned cheeky reward there.

Yes, each stack is that tall.

All the remaining requests I can do today are simple requests & battle requests(ie. non-important ones), so I just pick one at random.

You seem really tired.
Sashimi would hit the spot. Yeah, sashimi. It makes everything better. So, could you bring me 1 Glitter Sashimi.
That's my job as your apprentice, right? Oh, fine.
Heh heh, thanks. I'm counting on you.

Too much work for a simple request that'll probably reward me with bronze or something. :byewhore:

I spend the rest of the day forging instead. Gotta keep those skills up, especially since the game probably won't keep giving me high-tier weapons for free. Probably.

A shot of Link's new furniture before he goes to bed.

New day, new trolling Kuruna.

Music: Town (Day)

New Raven quest, etc.

I absolutely detest my family!
Uh...I certainly hope that was opposite-speak!

:allears:, but you're not who we're here for.

Yes. You wanted to thank everyone?
Yes...I really caused everyone a lot of trouble. That's why I thought to give everyone their favorite things.
Then you want me to help you gather those for you?
Yes...I want to give Sofia a Failed Dish, a Amethyst Ring for Karina. And a Gold for Gaius.
Yeah, okay. Then let's go give them in order.

To be clear, even though Raven says she wants to give people these things, we have to do all the work of procuring the items and handing them out. Nevermind that Raven should have easy access to two of the items thanks to her job.

Oh, and she steals all the credit.

Really?! I'm so sad, Thanks!
Oh, which reminds me--It seems that you think that special light makes people disappear.
What?!
You knew...?
Not at all.
So you did know.
It seems that phenomenon occurs when humans and monsters somehow cause an imbalance in runes.
Where humans and monsters cause an imbalance...? (That's pretty much just me being a half-monster.)
...
But I haven't found a case where it causes a person to disappear. Just monster pets.
But I saw. I saw with my eyes my friend disappearing...
Was that really a human?
Huh...?
Well, it doesn't matter. I just looked into it a little, I'm not worried about it at all...
Just let me know if you find something.
She must really be curious.

That ring was all me. :argh:

No...I caused you so much trouble the other day.
Trouble? (What is she talking about...?)
What?
Oh, yeah, right. I think you did. (I'll leave it at that.) Well, I'll let you off the hook with this then.

I...caused you trouble the other day...
Oh, is that all?
That all...?
Well, everyone's different I suppose, but I just did what I thought was obvious. Worry about my family.
Family...
I mean, you'd be worried about me if I disappeared, wouldn't you?
Yes...
That's all I mean. But I will be taking this, though. Thanks.
No, thank you...

Gaius: Dad of the year.

Link, for you...
What? For me?
Yes...
I see...Thanks. I'm happy.
...No, thank you...
Oh, by the way...here.
What? This feather...
I found it the other day when I came back with you. If you want, you could make it into an accessory.
...OK. Thanks...
Something the matter?
....No. Never mind.
Bye then.
...?

It's the thought(and obvious secret) that counts.

Inside, Raven's Adventures In Smiling continue.

What's the matter, Raven? What's wrong with your cheeks?
...!
...It's nothing.
???

Man, the bulletin board quests are really slim pickings this update. Guess that's an excuse to show off more daily dialogue.

You have much to learn! I'm still training myself.

You really have a great friend...Marian.

Still not seeing those good qualities Collette was talking about.

Just a little?

And Rusk's quest is just a free cookie. I think I know what to do with this.

Thankfully, RF villagers don't get mad about regifting. :v:

Okay.
Would you like to try this on?

No, I have no idea what horrifying thing she wanted him to wear.

Thanks to boredom and having way too much cash, I decide to spruce up Link's place with some furniture.

And stuffed animals, because why not.

Way too damned many stuffed animals.

Sadly, you can't have literally every piece of decor.

Another outfit change, and now it's time to see what I did to Link's poor house.

Delivery so lazy I bet Karina did it.

Better. Purely decoritive furniture can be moved around at will, but can't be put into your inventory. It also tends to teleport back to the main room if you try to put it anywhere else, even other rooms of the house.

If you want to get rid of it, you have to use a tool to break it down into wood.

Having this much clutter actually makes the game lag a little(and it gets in the way since Link can't walk through it), so I'm going to end up destroying most of the stuff I just bought. :capitalism:

Much more reasonable. Let's check out downstairs, we haven't been there in a while.

Link's trophy collection is actually something to look at now.

They all either commemorate the first time we did specific actions, or winning various festival contests.

For contests with specific minigames, like the Wooly Festival, you can replay them at will here. Mostly handy if you really, really suck at one and need to practice.

Much like skills, there are trophies for goddamned everything.

After a busy day decorating and undecorating, I think Link's earned his rest.

I, frankly, want this smug Jagen to be my avatar on all forms of social media immediately.

It feels like RF3 is personally attacking me with this line.

This update really does seem to kinda highlight the extremes of the "wacky" character writing in the game. Carlos talking about 18 WIELDING was pretty funny and made me smile, but Marian's whole questline and character being "she's grossly irresponsible and likely to poison her friends to death for the hell of it. Please still like her." feels like way too much.

Yeah, by and large they've done pretty well to make the extreme character traits basically harmless, either to themselves or to others, except for Raven's social issues and Marian's potential for accidental murder.
Raven's growth in dealing with that seems tied to the main plot, but from the sound of it I'm not sure if Marian will actually lose her big character trait and start letting responsibility get in the way of enthusiasm. As long as the game keeps preventing her from actively hurting anyone they could keep playing it off without fixing the core issue, but it's weird for them to make a big deal about how dangerous she's behaving if that's gonna be the case.
