Probably the prop department. I remember the pilot had a very obvious box of Cap'n Crunch but it was called "Crunchies" and there was a circular container of Quaker Oatmeal just called "cereal."

Also, speaking of food, I loved the hospital food callback from the Mitchums ("You don't want to eat hospital food"). S2E1 had about 5 references to it:

I completely disagree with your take, so there's a lot of things I could say. But I what I will say is the Twin Peaks S1 and S3 are a natural outgrowth of Lynch's evolution as an auteur, and that as TV increasingly gets more central and profitable, an unmolested outgrowth of an artists vision being so truthfully created is something that everyone can enjoy I hope, even if it doesn't slot into something that might or might not have existed, through the lens of decades and nostalgia.

The expansion of the united states over really 200 years to cover the two coasts and in between creates an interesting web of connectivity and unique qualities that I don't think can be separated, they always settled the land, often killed to get it, and many did it with a sense of national unity. Many towns across the country have the same names because often the goal was to just set up the same thing further away from the coast. A story about a small town in america is a story about american's trying to create something like what is depicted as the atomic family. 1950's atomic era america is the real texture of the series (I feel).

That aside the area in Washington where Twin Peaks is supposed to roughly be is also about where the uranium for the Trinity bomb was mined from, and that caused some problems in the area at the time. The Midnite Mines in the 1950's caused displacement of native americans from their reservation as the uranium was under it. Radiation has been detected in multiple locations throughout the reservation. Also domestic supply for uranium became the norm on the mid 50's, whereas before the war it was taken from international sources. So we began mining more of our own land and displacing people to make, among other things, atomic weapons. Pretty evil imo.

I don't think Twin Peaks has been decentered from the story, part of the very ground near the town was transfigured into an incredible weapon. I don't think the link leading back to Twin Peaks has truely been shown yet.

Very cool post. You can't extricate the small town from the larger American experience. Something I've really dug is Lynch's painting of small town life, on the cusp of collapse and decay, and that's found everywhere in America this days.

The children of the original cast, on the whole (other than Bobby basically) is doing worse than their parents, stuck in place and sinking and diving into drugs and debauchery as a lifeline (Becky's sunlit daze is pretty much the opiod crisis in a single shot, the woman screaming about 119).

Our supposed heros and protectors are sidelined or gone, debilitated and out of reach, and the ideal of American life for those old enough and lucky enough to achieve it is a sun drenched dry street full of identical houses with disappointed spouses and ignored children.

The real action, the real zeal, is held by those who live their lives in criminality, from the dealers to the casino owners. The sense of community so many people who had loved the original run, like in life, is largely gone, except for the rare exceptions who mourn over what is lost (that scene in the conference room mourning Log Lady).

I could go on but there's just so much to chew there. I'm so happy S3 exists.

There were some weak episodes around the middle but the last few have been amazing. The Return is slow, but it's intense when it works. The last episode is a great example - you had the incredible feelgood scene of Cooper waking up, the tragedy of Diane and the shootout followed by a truly hilarious punchline in the space of a few scenes. It's a real rollercoaster.

After the way ep16 tied so much together, this is about the only character or scene that I feel hasn't contributed anything. I'm really curious if its going to end up being relevant.

I've been thinking about ep16 and the death of the Hutchinsons. We saw Lynch moving all these pieces into place and it was blatantly obvious what was going to happen. There was going to be a 3 way showdown between the Hutchinsons, the Mitchums, the FBI, and Maybe Cooper/Dougie. Then Lynch just pulled the rug out from under us and went somewhere else.

Its the same as the episode as a whole, Lynch moved all these pieces in to place the obvious thing to happen next is the whole cast converging on Twin Peaks and a showdown between Coop and Danzig. Its what everyone is expecting from the last 2 episodes, and I can't wait to see how Lynch manages to do something completely different than that.

Generational might not have been the right choice of words, but I've noticed that among my friends the two of us that actually watched the show are the only ones still keeping up with it vs everyone else that blasted through it.

I watched the original run with my mom and dad on TV when I was about 10 or so. I think most people probably watched everything on Netflix or the DVDs or whatever. The original show had a much more "tv" feel to it, and I think that's a part of what made it great. Watching it week to week was a totally different experience than getting to just watch through 6 episodes in a day. I think having watched the original series as it was meant to be viewed made this season easier for me to get through, but at the same time makes me realize how unlike the first two seasons this one feels.

American fiction writers have this tendency to make everything about the whole country, like whatever they're writing about is tied to some kind of unique national spirit that is embodied in everything, mythologising their own history as uniquely good or uniquely evil. In the first two seasons that wasn't there yet, the Black Lodge was something that seemed to precede the United States as a country and just kind of existed in a specific forest somewhere for some reason, i preferred it that way. Episode 8 of this season made it seem like Bob exists because of some great American original sin in the a-bomb, which felt like too much of a cliche.

That said it's fun to watch Twin Peaks as a foreigner because of how exotic it feels. New York or Las Vegas are common settings on TV and I kind of know what they're like, but the American northwest pretty much exists in my imagination as Twin Peaks. I've never been to a diner and I don't know what cherry pie even tastes like (apple pie but with cherries?) but I want to try it some day. The opening shots of the great northern and that waterfall set to the theme song really set a certain local mood and I felt going to Las Vegas kind of hosed that up a bit. The characters from that part of the story are fun, I just don't care for the change in location.

Imagine watching a show that takes place in China. Would you rather have it take place in Hong Kong like so many movies, or in the rear end end of Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia or something for a change?

I think it's really interesting that Las Vegas was chosen as the secondary local in the Return. Like how the first two seasons depict the dirty underbelly of a seemingly wholesome town, this season shows us the hearts of gold that are buried in the bodies of scumbags.

It's no coincidence that the storyline of Dougie surviving society's indifference takes place in the most sinful city in the country.

Right now I'm reading Kafka on the Shore by Murakami, I get the feeling he drew a lot from Twin Peaks. Murakami is an American literature-inspired magical realist writer, he also likes to focus on back of beyond rural areas where supernatural stuff happens, most of the more enjoyable parts of his stories take place on like the forest in Shikoku or on the north shore of Hokkaido. The mountains in Hokkaido are the most Twin Peaks-looking place I ever visited, just endless pine trees and waterfalls, it's spooky there.

I can't remember off the top of my head which story it is, but in either The Elephant Vanishes or Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman there is a short story where someone goes to sleep and literally has a dream about a dancing dwarf

yeah, this is why i wasn't sure if audrey's dance in the roadhouse was a coma dream or a thing that was really happening at first. like, it's such a surreal event, but at the same time it is twin peaks canon that the jukebox at the double r has weird abstract jazz - and the popular local bar has a lot of dreamy synthpop acts pass through - so i was like well, maybe this is just the kind of town twin peaks is, everyone goes down to the hangout on thursday night to watch a middle aged woman vamp around

Cooper's revival wrapped up the Dougie storyline pretty nicely too. We were all assuming that Cooper either had no awareness of what was happening, or that he was just finding it painful to be locked in like that - making the whole storyline a bit of a sideshow. But as it turns out he was aware the whole time, and what he saw was kindness from all kinds of unexpected places. It's what he needed to recover from his time in the lodge, and return to being his former self.
