it's caused me no end of frustration of times for sure - and I'm sure I've done the same to other posters - but this is very likely the first time in my years here that I've actually kept up with a show's thread through an entire season, without having days or weeks where I totally ignore it. You go on reddit or welcometotwinpeaks.com or whatever and the discussion is kind of crap, and despite the derails and whatnot the overall quality of the discussion in this thread has been much higher. I'm gonna miss talking TP with you guys.

Our supposed heros and protectors are sidelined or gone, debilitated and out of reach, and the ideal of American life for those old enough and lucky enough to achieve it is a sun drenched dry street full of identical houses with disappointed spouses and ignored children. The real action, the real zeal, is held by those who live their lives in criminality, from the dealers to the casino owners. The sense of community so many people who had loved the original run, like in life, is largely gone, except for the rare exceptions who mourn over what is lost (that scene in the conference room mourning Log Lady). There were some weak episodes around the middle but the last few have been amazing. The Return is slow, but it's intense when it works. The last episode is a great example - you had the incredible feelgood scene of Cooper waking up, the tragedy of Diane and the shootout followed by a truly hilarious punchline in the space of a few scenes. It's a real rollercoaster.

I really think episode 16 is my favourite hour of TV ever. You're right, it's like a rollercoaster. The tonal whiplash going from coop waking up to the Diane scene and the American Woman remix was visceral. I could literally feel my stomach sinking.

We saw Lynch moving all these pieces into place and it was blatantly obvious what was going to happen. There was going to be a 3 way showdown between the Hutchinsons, the Mitchums, the FBI, and Maybe Cooper/Dougie. Then Lynch just pulled the rug out from under us and went somewhere else. Its the same as the episode as a whole, Lynch moved all these pieces in to place the obvious thing to happen next is the whole cast converging on Twin Peaks and a showdown between Coop and Danzig. Generational might not have been the right choice of words, but I've noticed that among my friends the two of us that actually watched the show are the only ones still keeping up with it vs everyone else that blasted through it. I watched the original run with my mom and dad on TV when I was about 10 or so. I think most people probably watched everything on Netflix or the DVDs or whatever. The original show had a much more "tv" feel to it, and I think that's a part of what made it great. Watching it week to week was a totally different experience than getting to just watch through 6 episodes in a day. I think having watched the original series as it was meant to be viewed made this season easier for me to get through, but at the same time makes me realize how unlike the first two seasons this one feels.

It's no coincidence that the storyline of Dougie surviving society's indifference takes place in the most sinful city in the country.

I'd say there have been at least 5 or 6 episodes that are as good or better than season 1 Twin Peaks, but episode 8 might be one of the best things David Lynch has ever done.

Cooper's revival wrapped up the Dougie storyline pretty nicely too. We were all assuming that Cooper either had no awareness of what was happening, or that he was just finding it painful to be locked in like that - making the whole storyline a bit of a sideshow. But as it turns out he was aware the whole time, and what he saw was kindness from all kinds of unexpected places. It's what he needed to recover from his time in the lodge, and return to being his former self.
