Minnesota circumvented the salary cap which is a much bigger crime than mere tampering which probably happens every day . They only punish it when you are dumb idiot who winks on national tv.

The Wolves are a special case, because they circumvented the cap, (something possibly done by other teams, we have no way of knowing) and there was material evidence, as Joe Smith dumped his agent and the agent gave the information about the illegal contract directly to the NBA. There was rock solid evidence and the sentence was 10 years in a pig pen.

Imagine if the lakers signed KCp for the vet minimum and them extended him next year at whatever the partial bird max is . That would be similar . What actually happened is that they signed him for 18 mill which is fair and he will have a substantial cap hold next year .
