It's a dig at his personal wealth, which is standout by Australian political standards.

In real life he's more well known for wearing leather jackets than top hats.

It's exactly the opposite of that though??? It's calling out the right for its partisan hypocrisy, and for moving far to the right without a comparable leftward move by the opposition.

No? What happens if red went left? The only way things can be balanced is to have both parties toeing the line. This analogy sucks because by nature the left can't go any more to the left either. In fact both parties would still be in harmony if both birds were on the far ends.

It's cute on the surface, sure. But it breaks down really fast when you think about it. It is a bad analogy and I can't handle it.

Have any of those lawmakers, like Cruz, been asked about their prior votes and what changed their minds? Probably a bad question to ask during an emergency?

The justification they gave at the time was "the aid package for Sandy was loaded with lots of unrelated, unnecessary spending, and that's what I voted against."

Of course, said "unrelated spending" was for infrastructure improvements and climate science which could help to mitigate the impact of future hurricanes but they don't mention that part.

The metaphor still holds up in the original, though, because the conclusion is either:

1. That Right Bird should return to a semblance of sanity

or 2. That in response, Left Bird should push harder and commit to more outspoken, radical structural changes to fix the system that Right Bird threw out of balance.

The "socialist" accusation, in my reading, isn't even necessarily meant to imply that's a totally bad thing, just underline that acknowledging facts is now considered "socialist" to half of the country, regardless of what actual leftward movement has taken place on the part of politicians..

I was a little confused by the color scheme. Historically, red was the color of socialists, but in the U.S. it now represents conservatism, oddly enough.

It isn't even a loving metaphor, it's a visual representation. The political left has moved ever closer to the centre. The right responded by moving ever further right. Now the whole system is at risk of toppling off to the right, and anyone who moves even slightly to the left is condemned as a socialist.
