I like how the blocks in the first act of Press Garden remind me of Castle of Illusion.

Look on the bright side.

Press Garden feels like a mix of Marble and Ice Cap Zones and that's cool to me. It's definitely the least exciting of the new zones but it's still good.

Press Garden and Titanic Monarch both have huge Freedom Planet vibes, both in looks and music. Which makes them pretty rad to me.

Especially given that this game doesn't have a bullshit difficulty curve problem like Freedom Planet did.

Distractions.

I saw a YouTube comment (I know, I know) that theorised that Robotnik set up his press in the garden because of the handy supply of trees to chop down and turn into paper.

Or the randomly torturing and mutilating the main player character problem, for that matter.

Yeah, act 2s deforesting the area for use in Act 1. I like it, it works

I like how a lot of the zones seem to actually be used by Robotnik for something. Like Press Garden and Studipolis' propaganda machine, the train in Mirage saloon taking oil from OOZ

It seems like Eggman is a bit of a media magnate, because he has his own TV station and newspaper to print propaganda in. He's also an oil baron and runs a casino business. And loves theme parks. The guy is definitely an eccentric billionaire. How else can he afford a badnik army and a giant Death Egg?

Also Sonic Mania should be rated M for Mature because in Press Garden Act 2, you can throw Tails into a woodchipper

I like the idea that Robotnik's got his own pirate Tv channel, a propaganda machine, and all this other stuff but nobody actually cares or pays attention to it but him.

Also Backyard Dad Zone is the best name and I'm stealing it

I wondered if the snow in Press Garden act 2 was actually the falling newspaper shreddings from the explosion at the end of act 1. Ice stuff could just be coincidental!

For what it's worth, in Riders it's mentioned he has a company called Robotnik Corp. making the Extreme Gear and presumably other stuff. So that's probably what he uses to fund his world domination stuff.

Obviously the extra money goes into personal luxuries like moustache wax and photorealistic sandwiches.

I wonder if "Ivo Robotnik" is the legitimate businessman and "Dr. Eggman" is the supervillain as far as the public are concerned.

And of course he doesn't bother with a disguise because this is the universe where people thought Shadow and Sonic were the same person.

I doubt it. In that part of SA2 where he hijacks the world's screens or whatever it has both that name and Eggman displayed on it. But like you said this is a cartoony-rear end world with very little in the way of logic so who knows

Nodosaur

Obviously that was only SPONSORED by Robotnik Corp. and once they learned Dr. Eggman was a very very bad man they pulled funding.

G.U.N. would buy it.

If you must blink, do it now.
After mulling it over I decided to keep my copy to support the devs (since I pre-ordered it anyway), but this'll probably be the last thing I buy from Sega until they walk-back this nonsense. I don't believe their company line on this for a second.

Waited to play the game until I'd made up my mind, so here we are. It's pretty good! Got my first game over on the boss of Flying Battery - it's been ages since I last played Sonic & Knuckles, and my timing's off for those spin column things. Here's some scattershot commentary:
  • The first boss being Sonic 2's final boss retooled was rad.
  • The second boss being Puyo Puyo was hilarious (and perfect timing, since I've been playing it recently).
  • Studiopolis is a pretty swanky.
  • Heavy Gunner's a fun fight but Weather Station Robotnik feels way too easy.
  • Loved the transition to Sky Battery.
  • Loved the nod to Sky Fortress.
  • Despite killing me, I like that this game isn't afraid to roll out the trickier bosses sooner rather than later.
  • I actually mastered the blue orb challenges in Sonic 3 & Knuckles as a kid, so I'm excited to see them return.

It occurs to me they could've done a fake-out, with Robotnik waiting for you at the end of the zone, only once you defeat him the egg police show up and you've gotta escape.

If it's real it would be fun to characterize the OC as being a huge fan of Shadow the Hedgehog in-universe.

Something I might have accidentally found out the other day but I still need to test it--I think it's not about timing, you can just hold left or right when you press jump to go in that direction.

This is true and has been since 1995.

Of course, every other "spin around something" object in that game works according to a semblance of physics, so Sonic is just weird and confusion is understandable.

Well, standard video-game-spinny-thing "physics" where you need to let go when your character is at the nearest point to the direction you want to go in, rather than moving in the right direction.
