A lot of the things people restart over aren't actually fatal to a campaign. You can recover from a lot. Try to keep going instead of starting over. Worst case you learn some new desperation tactics.

I feel like WOTC+mods has rendered the other DLC pointless, as long as the cosmetic mods get updated soonish and that seems to be happening. The cosmetic options in the DLC are garbage IMO, and the alien rulers, special classes and the special items aren't that important. You can get it once it's dirt cheap in the next sale, but XCOM2+WOTC without the other DLC is already more than enough.

Playing WOTC really showcases a lot of things you got used to in LW2

Stuff like panic making your soldiers do really unfun and moronic poo poo like grenade themselves so that they fall through the floor - there's a reason LW2 got rid of that crap. It's dumb.

Also I love how the Lost really rub those 80%/90% misses in your face. We all get them once in a while but if we're being honest, in LW2, an 80% pretty much felt like it was a confident shot

WOTC laughs at that

Not 100% sure, actually, I haven't seen dupe traits. I assume they can keep learning new stuff indefinitely if you leave them alive, though.

would it do any good to tell you about the string of turns i had during a game of lw2 last week where i missed three consecutive 90%+ shots and then had my best soldier be crit on a 1% chance to hit roll from max range and immediately die. i don't think 80% is different in either version my dude.

Not sure if I'll play with the expansion or not initially though (seen various arguments for and against and am still undecided). Beyond this, is any of the previous DLC considered essential or worth getting?

play the expansion. you're not going to miss some "pure" experience or anything, the expansion just adds a ton of really awesome stuff on top. And big performance gains are always great of course. I only have like 4 hours in it because I've been busy but man it is loving fun.

Lost ain't so bad. Sure you miss but they really don't hurt that much if you fail to mop up 1-2 (which you will because the zombies keep getting more HP for "reasons" as you progress). What really hurts is missing the chosen where they generate 3 shields every loving time they miss. Mix that with a perk that makes them regenerate HP every turn, or take a free reaction shot to misses, or something else like that and you have an instant salt generator when those 80%+ shots start missing.

Nice world you've got here. Shame if anything were to happen to it.

I lost my Champion SPARK in the assault on the Assassin's stronghold. He succumbed to an Andromedon acid bomb. I'd always thought they combined the best traits of being invincible and expendable, but I pushed too hard and paid dearly for it. 'Galahad', and his tricked out rail cannon, will be missed.

panicked advent captain threw a grenade at his buddy which somehow missed. didn't know that could happen!

also took the berserker queen down to a little less than half health just by parking a concealed dude in view of it and freezing/grenading/sniping it outside of its view distance. pretty silly that works now.

So I take it SPARKs are still useless if you don't put a mod on their guns? It's missed literally every shot but one and never had better than 70% odds except with height advantage.

There's a few weird edge cases that makes poo poo that should have 100% chances to hit (like grenades) not actually be guaranteed hits. I've had psi-troopers miss fuse because they were being suppressed (the muton let out a cover-destroying fart apparently). I could see how panic would also induce a weird, global accuracy penalty that makes grenades behave weird.

Also I'm pretty sure you could always do that poo poo with a concealed Ranger. It's just 100x easier with Reapers.

They now start with 74 Aim out of the gate, and they don't give two shits about cover so you can run them around however you want. Try flanking/running closer to the enemy. Of course a scope never hurts...or a laser pointer for crits. Especially when you get the continental bonus that gives all mods +1 tier. :getin:

I leveled a SPARK up pretty high before I was extremely reckless with one and got him killed in a completely avoidable situation - they're actually very powerful even without weapon mods (thoguh weapon mods can make them even better). The weapon hits so hard and shreds armor, and was considerably above average accuracy for me - maybe he just got good aim rolls on levelup? I did take the skill that removes the aim penalties on overcharge, though - being able to shoot an enemy three times in one turn, with armor shredding, is a massive lifesaver vs sectopods and gatekeepers and other heavily armored nasties.. Having the skill that enhances the rocket's size/damage leads to some really impressive cover-clearing, too - you can turn a building into a flat pile of rubble in one turn.

The important part though his that a SPARK has no fatigue, can be deployed while wounded (and then immediately use a self-repair skill), and is immune to fire (purifiers will waste turns throwing incindiary grenades and flamethrowering a SPARK) and poison and mind control and panic and daze. You can /know/ the spark will be available, while most other A-team units could be neurotic, or tired, or wounded, or suffering from PTSD and flat out refusing to work for a month.

The spark being able to shred like 4-6 armor easily is soooo important in the second half of the game, and once you slap a +aim gun mod, he's probably your most consistent unit.

Its not super obvious but they're listed under the stats on the base solider page. At least I think that's where they are. I spent about 10 minutes looking for it and somehow ended up there.

It's neat that the phobias are tied to specific events rather than random. I had another soldier go demonophobic after a chosen showed up and murdered two squad mates in the middle of a retaliation.

Oh man I just had a loving nailbiter with the Avatar project. I haven't touched an alien facility and I'm in late June. I only saved the game by hitting a covert action that dropped progress by 2 with literally hours to go, and in the process lost two territories to a retaliation and something else. That was far tighter than I've ever been with satellites in XCOM EW.

Now to get rekt by a ruler (probably).

They're the new will broken mechanic and it's done pretty well. Of course it means you can't just slap a mindshield on them for victory like you could with the previous system.

This doesn't mean Mind Shields aren't powerful as hell though. They block the Chosen's attempts to stun people (they'll still do damage but the soldier will still be standing). Shrunken sectoid head on a keychain: proven 10x more effective than tin-foil hats at keeping aliens out of your mind.

Based on how it's dodged zero attacks, hit once, and is 1 hp against the Sectopod and broken robits I think I'm just going to leave it in the trash.

Speaking of which boy that Sectopod sure loving sucks when you fail the haywire, every attack from 60 to 90 misses (HOW did you miss the 100, sharpshooter. gently caress you.), and what doesn't does minimal damage!
