Like, I understand it's a horrible thing to say, but it's sorta the thing you say to calm someone down. My mom was worried when I was going to Occupy protests so I said "don't worry, I'm not black or a Vet."

Absolutely, but even more troubling is that she is specifically being arrested for her refusal to break the law (which probably also happens a lot).

I recall a couple three weeks ago, that cop who murdered a driver in front of his girlfriend (wife?) and 8 year old child, because he had a concealed carry permit and lawfully informed the officer of that fact while clearly not going for the gun or doing anything dangerous. Most likely if he'd chosen not to mention the firearm the stop would have been peaceful and he'd have gotten to drive away after getting a ticket or whatever. I might be remembering the details wrong but basically if you're upsetting a cop, the law does not protect you at all. Maybe he'll get in trouble later, maybe not, but in the moment you should go ahead and obey a cop's illegal orders so you don't get shot. At least, if you're not white.

Curiously that's also an incident the NRA never loving mentions when they talk about government infringement of 2nd amendment rights. I'm glad the nurse didn't comply with the illegal order to draw blood from an unconscious person, I don't even understand why a cop would want a blood sample from someone not under arrest.

It's worse than that, the accident the truck driver was in was because a man was fleeing with his car from the cops and ran into him. They still were trying to get his blood.

Gumbel2Gumbel posted:It's worse than that, the accident the truck driver was in was because a man was fleeing with his car from the cops and ran into him. The stated justification was that proving he was sober would help his own case against I guess the estate of the deceased drunk who hit him. This is horseshit, of course: the presumption without evidence would be that he was not impaired, and without probable cause to get a blood sample, it's obviously against his interest to possibly test positive. Unable to get consent, and lacking probable cause to take blood, the nurse correctly protected his right to not volunteer to give a blood test that could only have possibly hurt any case he might have. What is completely baffling is the behavior of the cop. It's not like he was trying to nail a suspect or something. The most obvious explanation for his insistence is that he didn't like being told no by some uppity civilian who thinks she knows the law better than he does. Which, hmmm, hmmmmmm, someone decides to go into a career as a cop, turns out he kind of likes being in charge and really hates being not in charge, gosh
