During the civil war he signed an order expelling Jews from several border states; there were several Jews involved in smuggling, but it was an overly broad order that was never really enforced because Lincoln directly countermanded it.

It pretty clearly haunted Grant for the rest of his life because he was the most pro-Jewish president ever when he was elected, appointing more Jews to federal jobs than all of his predecessors combined, was the first president to visit Jerusalem, was the first president to attend a synagogue at its opening, intervened diplomatically to try to stop Russian pogroms... etc etc etc etc.

Dude made a mistake and was on balance very very much not an anti Semite, but he did That One Thing so let's remove his bones from his tomb!!!!!!!!

Wow, I can't believe I read the whole thread!!!!!!

E: Just so I'm not threadshitting, can anyone link good voting resources for new NYC residents? I moved back to Manhattan year ago, and registered for the dems so I could vote in the presidential election, but have since moved across island. I don't really have a good idea on the structure of local government, who my state representatives are, when they'll be up for re-election, or any other local or neighborhood politics I should be aware of or even if I need to update my voter registration with my new address!!!!

WNYC does pretty good and comprehensive voter guides a few weeks before any given race as far as that stuff goes.

Yes you need to update your address. He easiest way is to fill out the same form as a new voter registration - there's a checkbox to say "this is a change of address"

As for the basic structure of local government, here's a quick rundown of important stuff:

I am gonna assume you know who the mayor is and what a mayor does. The specific nuances of his power and the limitations thereof aren't helpful here.

You have a city council person. This person is probably a Democrat unless you live on Staten Island. The Democratic Primary is the "real" race for these seats. The NYC Council is relatively weak as city legislatures go, owing to the combination of NYC by charter having a very strong executive branch, and, more importantly, the power of taxation (and just about anything financial that flows from that) being wholly controlled by Albany, even for local taxes that only affect NYC residents. They get elected in odd numbered years that follow leap years (like this one!) to four year terms, and have a limit of two consecutive terms. Since the introduction of the NYC Public financing system, the council has gotten dramatically more diverse in its membership.

There are two other citywide offices of note: the Public Advocate and the Comptroller. In general you can think of both of these offices as existing to look over the mayor's shoulder and make sure he's doing a good job. The Comptrollers mandate is specifically financial, of course, and the office has some other responsibilities in terms of managing the cities various pensions and other finances, but, especially under the current officeholder, Scott Stringer, the office has become very aggressive about ensuring the business of other agencies is on the up and up.

The public advocates mandate is a bit more nebulous - it's essentially a soapbox position that can introduce legislation andnspeak in the council, but can't vote. Also first in line of succession to be mayor.

You also get to vote for a borough president and a DA. DA's do what you think they do. The Borough Presidents role is increasingly vestigial - at this point they primarily exist to be a booster in chief for the borough, as well as signing off on some land use stuff, and an occasional advocacy role. Not much power.

You can also vote for judges and stuff.

Next time: The State Legislature!!!!

Anyone have opinions on the Brooklyn DA primary? Gonzalez has continued some of the work of Ken Thompson but shows a worrying pattern of playing nice with the usual NYC politico shitheads. The PBA endorsement is not comforting either.

Fliedner apparently has some endorsements from progressive groups and old Bernie people. He was also glad handing with his husband while shitfaced at Brooklyn pride this year.

I don't know anything about any of the other candidates and there seems to be very little coverage or campaigning for a race with six candidates.

I'm voting for Fliedner. It's not the end of the world if Gonzalez wins because he's picking up after Thompson. Since Charles Hynes got booted, the Brooklyn DA's office ended up throwing out thousands of old arrest warrants, and they were the first to make possession of up to 1 ounce of weed only ticketable.

On the other hand. Fliedner was the guy who got a conviction for Peter Liang, and he resigned in protest when the Brooklyn DA's office haggled down his punishment to basically nothing. He and Dwimoh are the only candidates who put ending broken windows policing on their platform.

my friend's been getting the same thing from Chaim Deutsch but he's presumably doing it for the general, not the primary. that district's gone super red, since the leftie Jews and working-class Italians have given way to Hasidic Jews and ex-Soviets who hate anything that smells like communism

Well do your part, there is the list of candidates on the primary ballot. Research the ones in your district, don't let incumbency be a shield.

Alternatively: http://whosontheballot.org

machine politics is your answer

in my district, lander is running unopposed and he's decent, i suppose. if i lived a few blocks east i'd have mathieu eugene, who does nothing and is disliked but will win by splitting the primary vote

if anybody is in east harlem and parts of the south bronx, don't vote for rodriguez. also don't vote for diaz sr. or cabrera (who was a republican but switched)

i heard that gustavo rivera doesn't have his picture up at bronx dem HQ, which means he's doing something right

The greater question is what kind of dum dum registered for the green party in a solid blue city? In the general you can still vote for your JO Crystal candidate, but before you do that, maybe you could help steer the party who is going to win to be more progressive?

it's a shame that brisport is a registered green because he's in a district that could really go for him in the primary. instead, the socialist candidate running as a Dem is in the district that has Dyker Heights poo poo in the middle of the sandwich

I figured Brisport was running green so he could make it to the primary in the first place. That primary is already pretty nasty. Figure I can vote for Ede Fox in the primary and Brisport in the general. Fox seems OK too, so it's only a tragedy if Cumbo wins again.
