Never forget: Texas (if I remember right?) board of education was against teaching critical thinking skills in general because it makes one less likely to blindly follow their parents (authority's) advice. And the Texas textbooks are the ones that decide what a shitload of other states choose for their books too. We really hosed up as a nation by allowing trends like that to continue unabated for decades.

Texas textbooks tend to get chosen by conservative states/districts depending on how the purchase system works, but if Texas was some radical leftist state with the same pull on the textbook market, all the shitstack conservative schools would just have another Conservative Freedom edition to buy which would be equally as lovely and dumb - look at how Southern apologism started spreading in American textbooks in the early 20th century despite no one Southern state having the kind of critical purchasing power to demand it on their own.
