the chapters i read were trashy soap opera stuff with some weirder bits and all i've heard about the later chapters is stuff like ending one chapter with the implication that a girl is choosing to become a sex worker and then just never acknowledging it again

either way if you want yuri stuff there's way better poo poo to watch

Yeah, those are to properly set the setting and prompt the characters growth. It also gets really cute lately

One of the key factors that makes Citrus work at all is its pacing, which is the kind of thing an adaptation in a different medium can easily screw up, so I might wait for enough episodes to be out to get a general sense of how it's being handled before I try and get into the anime.

To be fair, abuse and emotional manipulation are pretty standard Dumb Soap Opera Crap. We live in a world where Twilight and 50 Shades were both smash hits, after all.

I was expecting lots of "LOL US Gamerz rite???" stuff but it's kinda touching and heartwarming and funny.

Most of it doesn't really focus on console or pc games. It's pretty much all arcade, mobile, or the quasi casino games that are popular in Japan.

Two background characters play fighting games or FPS's but they've barely speak a dozen lines between the two of them.

it's a trashy romcom with decently fun characters and vaguely game-based gags with an op animated by a really good animator who really likes and has actually played video games enough to make better clones of actual games than any of the cg knockoffs in the show itself

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBYkMFGkZNc

it's ok, for some reason the first episode is really really bad but it's been decently fun since ep 2

e; actually you were probably just asking if the author has played video games. in which case i will say uh maybe??? i think he knows what tales and ys are at least, vaguely, maybe not really but he knows they exist and that ys has good music. i have no idea if tales of phantasia getting bashed for not being as revolutionary as it was selling itself as is true or him just pulling that out of his rear end though

I'm reconsidering why I dropped Centaur's Worries. My complaints were pretty minor, and I do really enjoy the manga so I'll give it another shot. I hope they do justice to badass centaur archer demigodess in alternate grubby human universe.

in one scene, a member of the Hoofen-SS has just shot two civilians. He aims his gun at his next victim, a child, before he is stopped by his fellow soldier. They've met their quota of victims... for now. "Have we?", replies the soldier. He lowers the gun, but cannot resist kicking the child full in the chest as a final act of cruelty and dominance.

The next shot is of a train moving through a bleak European countryside. Inside one of the cars, the child is packed together with dozens of other victims on their way to a concentration camp; they are packed closely together like cattle, deliberately reminiscent of the victims of Buchenwald.

In the other scene, the girl with the sleepy eyes has done the centaur girl's (Hime's) hair in a very cute way.

Ed:
A couple of thoughts about the composition of those scenes: Visually, it's interesting to note how Hime's giant eyes and deliberately abstracted facial features make her look like a doll or toy, cute and harmless - it's the counterpoint of a visual gag. In contrast, the composition of the shot renders both soldiers faceless; they are embodiments of man's inhumanity to - uh, centaur's inhumanity to - look, I lost the train here somewhere. Tone. These scenes have very different tone.

There is a thematic through line: the focus of the section from screenshot #1 was on the centaur girl's family history. She is descended from a warrior princess, but she is totally harmless; just a teenage girl worried about her looks and her grades. She Is removed from the difficulties of the past.

I think the show knows what it's doing. I just don't have any idea what the gently caress it's doing.

by context i was more looking for how the two scenes related. like yeah if you smash cut from nazi centaur war crimes to hairbrushing that would sure be an intense juxtaposition, but my gut says the show and source material aren't that cheap.

Fair enough, you're right about the pacing at any rate: the two scenes are from different episodes (and different chapters in the manga). However I'm hard pressed to think of another slice of life show that alternates between cute vignettes about monster girls and Secretariat's List*. Shows that deliberately play up the contrast between art-style and content, sure. Madoka Magica comes to mind, and there are plenty of others. Centaur's Worries has a very particular weirdness to it though, because that whole sequence isn't there to generate drama, cheap or otherwise.

It's the flashback of a character who never shows up again--there are no stakes or personal connection to any of the main cast. A show that dedicates an episode to go 'and on an unrelated note let's ponder what the Holocaust would look like if we replaced the Jews and Nazis with horse- and cat-people' is probably not traveling the road to financial success, is what I'm getting at. I admire the stubbornness that takes.

*i was going to use Shoahbiscuit, but that seemed like it might be kind of a reach
