Meanwhile, in the world of game developers who actually know how to produce games, new SCORN gameplay video! :D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gug_0mNhg4k

The Serbian studio producing this game needs additional funds and started a Kickstarter. They say they have gotten most of their financial support so far from partnering with USA based Humble Bundle.

"For the past two years, our team has been working hard on the development of Scorn. Our studio has grown to over 20 people and we have entered the financial partnership with Humble Bundle, which helped us immensely at the time.

We are getting close to completion of Part 1, but we’re not really satisfied with all the aspects of the game. After much internal deliberation, we decided that it would be the best to try and acquire additional resources, taking more time to polish the game and really make it shine, rather than releasing something we’re not entirely happy with.

If we succeed in raising additional funds through this campaign we plan to release the game in 2018."

They plan to release the game in Q4 2018 DRM free!

UH OH.... FEATURE CREEP!!

"150K – GOAL REACHED! We can spend more time working on the game and deliver the full Scorn experience just like we envisioned it.

175K – We will create an immersive VR level for the ultimate experience of the world and atmosphere of Scorn.

200K – Two additional enemy types will be developed and added to the game.

250K – Additional location and content will be added to the game if we get this far.

300K – ???"

Highest tier Kickstarter Pledge is $300. Who the gently caress would pay that much for a game?!?

Anyway you can see the game has got a heavy Cronenberg and Giger influence.

No it doesn't. If you want to make your dreams, go start your own independent company. Look at all the indie games that are successful. Your can have your creativity (and there is some great stuff out there) and make a living off it. But, If you want to work in the big machines of the 150+ million dollar AAA business: You start as a cog, because the machine is huge. I might seem a bit blunt and jaded, but part of that comes from exactly what you are all so upset about : Many of us have tried to change things a few times in our industry careers, and many of us were either punished, branded as malcontents, blackballed, or found unemployment on the other end. Even worse is when you do make a change that makes the team better and people are happier, then the game you make fails to meet projections, and you are all let go. Then, sadly, the magic of what was changing is now lost and scattered - while you go to the next company to work, and they tell you that "This is how we do it here: there's your desk"

Edit: And for Foo Didley: I'll give it a rest.
all the indie companies i know of seem pretty chill as working places. And i feel most of em feel burned out by AAA workplaces.
But i do feel like independent development is risky, as competition is hard and you need to have truly unique idea to succeed.

why do people in general trust these big ad's that are mostly lies.

So you buy cheap concepts and upgrade them to other hulls already released or to be released and the other hulls will inherit the LTI from the original concept sale purchase.

CCU tokens serve to limit how often you can do this (unless your willing to pay, of course). This whole "thing" is the reason why some people purchased 3-5 space bikes. Those bikes are being upgraded to other ships that are past concept sales so they can have LTI on them.

There is no way this game will be possible to balance once released.

Money talks and IP is a very powerful money generator. I'm sure that game companies have skeleton swat teams that prototype games and they have proper dev project management teams to manage these prototype deliverables to see if they would work as a product.

90% of these projects won't / dont see the light of day, and we won't even know they exist. But know that these projects are funded by on going sales of games. And not presales of ship jpegs. Companies are safe churning out what works, because it gives stability and it pays the bills.

In the last 500 years, the Fourth Stimpire has dominated four systems, which it has united into one starzone, Stimsis. The Fourth Stimpire has origins from the Ten Empire War in which 10 of the United Stimpires revolted against each rules. All empires except for the fourth swore freedom upon their citizens. There is no free speech in the Fourth Stimpire, and all self-controlled transportation has been made illegal without undergoing painful medical verification methods, in which arteries are severed without pain resistant, operated entirely by machines. The way they work claim to be the most hygenic and healthy way possible, but these machines often rub against pain points, causing great deals of pain to patients. The heart is then extracted from the body and placed into a glass grinding machine. Various energy centers are also dissected and replaced with dangerous transplants. After the painful, 52 hour surgical procedure, patients will then have to use a fused guidance tool, which pumps painful resistors into the body every 2 hours. The pain they have caused is so bad, the victim would freeze in a tense position. They would then collapse afterwards.

Sexual stimulation in any way within the grounds of the Fourth Stimpire is strictly prohibited, and anyone detected even touching their sexual organs will be subjected to a penectomy or if the offender was a female, they would then have a razor inserted into their ovaries. They would pump a blue solution into the womb until the stitchings burst. Offenders would also be forced to show their operated areas in public, and they would always harass and punch them to a pulp, against their will.

Otherwise, offenders would be tazed with the worst type of electricity in the systematic district, causing so much pain, the victim would scream and flail in madness. The pain would also triple every second, but no death would be incurred. This is also used in combat against enemy units, which is why all UEE forces must wear the upgraded suit to block this effect.

However, enertainment is also questionable in UEE grounds. Sporting events end with the losing team being rounded into a grinder and shredded on live television, boxing matches end with the loser having their hands removed without anasthesia, flight races would end with the losers having their arms and legs removed, then being injected with insanity, for entertainment. People are also forced into these events, by undergoing a painful 127 hour procedure which involves tweaking the muscles so they will not listen to brain commands, and then having a painful drug injected which also causes madness if the player is not sporting. This is all for entertainment, and anyone not watching any of it during sporting times and cheering for the winning team, they will be imprisoned into galactic camps.

Snuff films are also broadcast, and actors are actually murdered just for entertainment. Stealth droids also guide these forced actors into behaving exactly as the director dreams, otherwise they will be punished by being placed into a macerator and having their execution written into the film. Any film that does not feature someone being murdered will be burned and the entire crew behind it will be executed in the most grotesque way possible - vivisection.

All executions are broadcast, and anyone who misses even a millisecond, even by blinking, will be executed. All citizens must boo to the person being executed, and the family is gathered to be injected with eternators, which cause pain forever, making them immoral but feeling the pain tenfold every millisecond. They cannot pass out, but they will feel like it forever.

Conquests by this Stimpire end in the planet being razed, and all the citizens being executed in the same way as their citizens are. The planet is then destroyed and all remnants of it are removed, and any memories of it will be erased instantly from civil minds. People who are also killed are also erased from memories, and all memories of them, including toys and pictures, are destroyed.

Prisoners undergo 40,000 years of relentless and endless labor, and anyone not complying is sentenced to the eternator injection. All prisoners injected with eternators are placed into capsules and launched into far space, then the room is closed tight to ensure maximum insanity. Some prisoners are also subjected to the removal of blood, the lungs, the liver, the genitals, the skeleton, the muscles, the eyes, and even the injection of pressure. Prisoners sentenced to pressure chambers are locked in until they are inflated to a high level. The decompression is then stopped to make sure they are inflated and uncomfortable.

Children born on the 14th of July are subjected to the removal of their skeleton and an implant of a silver liquid to replace it. The nervous sysem is also injected in various parts to ensure it is five times more sensitive than the average.

Restaurants also are ordered to serve civil meat, and anyone attending must give themself up to be cooked into a grotesque meal. They are cooked alive, undergoing extreme pain, and are then subjected to industrial grinders and blenders. The Stimpire orders at least 1 million citizens to be dispatched every day, as they are afraid the population may overthrow them. But only one planet is cared for, and the rest are banned from eating, drinking, talking, using technology, touching anyone, wearing unauthorized clothes, touching buildings, or walking a centimeter out of designated routes. Civil enforcers are on every planet, and they are engineered so that they are 40 times larger than the 300 quadrillion population. At least 7 billion die every 12 hours under this rule.

Thoughts are also surveyed, and anyone who does not think anything to loving the Stimpire with more than their capabilities will be sentenced to a prison. Prisoners who are punished for this violation will meet their greatest fear, only to have it amplified so they will turn insane as they imagine it exactly as they fear it. They then undergo a painful extraction of all fluids, to be replaced by a toxin which causes permanent irritation. The unknown substance keeps the subject aging normally, except they will never die. Prisoners punished in this way are unable to be reverted, despite many efforts, and they will never be able to be disposed.

The sickening truths have been revealed only today, and invigilation teams are still investigating the truths without setting foot in the galactic space of this sickening empire.

I think Mne is mostly right (although maybe a bit aggressive), but what I think is truly unjust here is that there are some people whose first job in the industry is going to be at CIG. A real thing happened about a month ago, where we had an application come through where the only industry experience listed on this resume was from CIG. The hiring manager had no idea who that was, and after an explanation of the studio, (albeit, a negative one) we then discussed whether or not that counts as relevant experience.

In same ways, it's not unlike any other studio. You have to talk to people both inside and outside your expertise, and make plans that last for months and follow through on that stuff and understand a content pipeline and what not, but not having a box with which to put your name -- not having a shipped product with an end is kind of a big deal. Knowing how to triage and understanding the 'last 10%' problem is a big deal. The read I have from an external point of view is that CIG has never had to deal with the 'last 10%' because they keep on bolting on more features without polishing and really finishing anything they started. If we'd ever interview someone from CIG, there would probably be a whole battery of questions about triage, the process of bug-fix and polish, and how you manage time and resources to do that as best as you can. I'm not sure someone whose experience is exclusively with CIG could adequately answer those questions.

Why 3.01 is hosed, or 'if you want mining, first you must create the universe'.

Allow me to describe a simple scenario from a decidedly non-fidelitous and inferior space game, Elite, which is naturally a pale shadow of what the best space game ever is going to be in terms of complexity and realsim. Please bear in mind therefore that the following represents below an acceptable level of fidelity: :siren:In order to meet the expectations of backers, Chris needs to deliver a gameplay experience that is somehow deeper than this.:siren:

I want to mine some space rocks.

Part 1: I outfit my ship.

Mining at its very basic level requires a few key things: the ability to break off materials from the rocks surrounding them, the ability to process them into something useful, and the ability to store and transport them. I equip my ship with mining lasers, a refinery, and a cargo bay. But I like quality of life improvements as well: it would be nice if I could improve the yield of everything I'm mining, so I buy a controller for prospector limpets (drones that burrow into the asteroids I'm mining and tell me about their composition, and increases the amount of minable material I'm able to get off of a single asteroid), as well as one for collector limpets (drones that fly out and pick up individual hunks of rock so that I don't need to fly my ship over to every single one in order to scoop them into my cargo bay). I also think that I might need protection from people trying to pirate my goods: because I don't want to be a sitting duck, I equip my ship with a hanger bay so that my buddy can patrol a fighter around while I'm busy with rocks and keep hostiles off my tail.

Things required for the mining loop so far: Mining equipment. Refining equipment. Materials storage. Equipment for scanning minable bodies. Equipment for retrieving ore. Woking multicrew. Hostile enemy ships dedicated to pirating miners. Mechanics by which ships can liberate enemy cargo while in combat with them so as to avoid just blowing the cargo up while fighting.

Part 2: I work out where to go mining.

I open up my galaxy map and figure out where to go in order to start making some sweet, sweet spacebux. I notice that a nearby star system has a bunch of worlds with metallic ring systems, which usually has better prospects for mining. I travel there. Around one gas giant there's a pristine ring system that has one of each resource zone: a low-traffic zone which has smaller yields but less people zooming around in it and which would be generally safer, a high-traffic zone that has lots of people in it because the mining's good, and a hazardous zone which may have the best prospects, but which has no police presence due to the fact that it's in a black spot for distress calls - a real Wild West scenario. I decide to go to the high-traffic zone: I'm equipped enough to deal with a few pirates that might try to harass me and can last long enough for the cops to get there if I start to get overwhelmed.

Multiple star systems. Multiple worlds with varying types of resources, richness in resources, and types of mining zones. Multiple minable material types. AI miners to populate zones. Police presence, and the notion of high and low-security zones.

Part 3: I go mining.

I launch and engage my frameshift drive to travel to my targeted star system, and fly there. I boost towards the planet's ring and drop in to the metallic asteroid zone. Finding a likely asteroid that doesn't have anyone else mining it, I blast it with my mining laser, and target the chunk of rock that comes off of it. Cobalt. poo poo. I find another asteroid, and repeat. This one has a fair amount of gold content, so I launch a prospector limpet at it, and start mining, launching collector limpets as I go. I pirate jumps in and scans my hold: finding gold there he attacks. My buddy in the fighter and I fight back, and kill him with an assist from a police cruiser: safeguarding my days' work, and getting a small bounty reward into the bargain as it's not that guys' first rodeo. Finally when my hold is full I boost out and head back to my space station. But I realise that the station I'm heading to is an agricultural one, and has little use for gold. I locate a station with more of a bent towards precious commodities and go there instead. Finally I sell my mined materials, repair my ship from the damage it took in the battle, and plan my next move. My buddy gets a chunk of the profits.

Things required for the mining loop so far, hyper turbo extended edition:
  • Mining equipment.
  • Refining equipment.
  • Materials storage.
  • Equipment for scanning minable bodies.
  • Equipment for retrieving ore.
  • Woking multicrew.
  • Hostile enemy ships dedicated to pirating miners.
  • Mechanics by which ships can liberate enemy cargo while in combat with them so as to avoid just blowing the cargo up while fighting.
  • Multiple star systems.
  • Multiple worlds with varying types of resources, richness in resources, and types of mining zones.
  • Multiple minable material types.
  • AI miners to populate zones.
  • Police presence, and the notion of high and low-security zones.
  • Planets with ring systems.
  • AI miners.
  • Minable bodies with differing materials and levels of richness.
  • Scanning minable materials to determine their composition.
  • The ability to scan other ships to determine if they are worth pirating.
  • A fully-formed bounty system.
  • A fully-formed universal economy that provides incentives to sell different commodities to different buyers.
  • Repair and re-arming systems.
  • A profit-sharing system for multicrew.

I could go on, and frankly there's a bunch of stuff that I've likely missed because this is something that I'm typing up in my free time as I shitpost on the internet. But look at how many dependencies the mining loop that a comparable game has. And look at all of the dependencies I've listed and think about how many of them would have multiple dependencies of their own.

At that game's current state, assuming that all of the game-breaking bugs in the current build were solved overnight, that whatever they're doing with mining it planned to a tee, and a competent dev team with unlimited funding took over, Star Citizen could have a mining gameplay loop that rivals the inferior nonfidelitous space madness simulator Elite: Dangerous by 2019 at best.

I actually think the fault lies in consumer. Why do people support AAA development?

Because theres a lot of good AAA games? Problem is weeding out the chaff. You are far more likely to be burned by indies at any rate.

Also Battlefield 1 is pretty epic.

when i think about it Star Citizen is the next step of AAA development.
Instead of releasing disappointing end product to consumer you just keep on piling up the promises and fidelity. With soon being a keyword keeping people investing into the product.

Think about it star citizen has always been close to finish. But what is actually getting finished is a trailer of next big feature delaying the overall process.
from in engine made 2012 sq42 trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN6LSz9D3kk
to terra landing in 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UaFSd-ezQc
to citylanding in 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Gx-3iwXvoQ
to almost complete nyx landing zone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2YMlnn4Ngk
to pupil planet at end of 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yLTm8DZ8s4&t=1s
to sandworm in 2016 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuDj5v81Nd0&t=6861s
to facetracking in 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCtdyNFwQWo&t=5671s
each time raising the expectation of consumer.
the more they deliver the actual product the less they can sell the dream forward.

im fearing this is the lesson AAA will learn from star citizen

edit: tax

Edit2: and i guess my feelings are mostly about single player quality drop. I dont buy games for multiplayer usually.

No poo poo: the dev diaries that Factorio does are hands-down some of the best forms of REAL open development I've ever seen. They talk about achievable goals in real terms, and when talking about bugs, blockers, and technological challenges they provide excellent detail and give it in easily digestible terms even for a layman, but without sounding dumbed down.

Read this:

That's just one dev diary, but I can recommend reading through a bunch of them to see how clear they are being with their approach to dev. Even if you don't want to click, check this out:

It's extremely funny to me that SC pretends to have all this "fidelity" when actual simulations exist. From infantry combat to ground vehicles to atmospheric flight to space flight, other games did it far better years ago

The very first game I ever played was Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 with my dad on his laptop back in 1990. The game came out in 1989 and it still has a better flight model than Star Citizen, a game made 28 years later.

The Stimpire is such a great text. Like, it's so dense that despite reading it several times I only just realised its lore includes ~240 foot tall policemen.

Edit: And for Foo Didley: I'll give it a rest.

so that explains no mans sky. You come from that environment knowing nothing and learning nothing and create poo poo. Promising the sun the moon and the stars and getting star citizen. All the while having poo poo practices.
