Dallas Mavericks: Generations
A classmate invited me to play a pickup game tomorrow. I don't think I've played a game of pickup basketball in over 5 years. I've messed around dribbling and shooting every few months or so, but I'm predicting I play poorly. I'm going to be the bad hustle player. The goal is to get boards and pass the ball to better players. (and attempt at least one crossover to see if it works.)

British Steel may have the hits but Sad Wings and Stained Class are universally considered classics

Yea, they're appreciated by people in the know but I'd be hesitant to say any film/album/book is "universally considered" anything. Lots of people have zero interest in that genre etc. without even getting into particulars.

There are a lot of Gen Z people out there that don't even know about JP pre-Painkiller. JP recently started playing "Never Satisfied" live and a lot of people were confused as they'd never heard of it. The other thing is that premier tracks from those first five albums get zero radio play:

"Dissident Aggressor"
"Saints in Hell"
"Beyond the Realms of Death"
"Dreamer Deceiver"

*radio silence*

"ESQ: You love basketball?

RH: Yes…

ESQ: Do you have a favorite team?

RH: Well, I’ve still got my house in Phoenix, so I’m a Phoenix Suns fan. It’s been difficult for the team for the last few seasons, but I think we’ve got something very strong growing there and I think that next season is going to be spectacular. However, I also have my lucky San Antonio Spurs shirt and I was wearing that the day that they beat Miami. So I’m a Suns fan first, then I veer a little bit to the Lakers occasionally, but then the San Antonio Spurs. But yeah, I love it. And it’s only because I’ve spent so much time in America now that I learned to love the game. It’s such an exciting game. I love the way that one second can seem like an eternity. There’s one second on the clock and somehow somebody can pass the ball to two or three guys and they can get it in the hoop as long as it leaves their hands. The buzzer might have gone off, but as long as it left your hands it’s still going to count. It’s extraordinarily exciting!"

I'd been meaning to check the z-scores (standard deviations above average) for the main five stat categories. 15,000+ MP players:

code:
Player PTS z-score
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar	5.09
Karl Malone 4.82
Kobe Bryant 4.20
Michael Jordan 3.95
Wilt Chamberlain	3.78

Trenton Hassell -1.40
Jon Koncak -1.45
Ervin Johnson -1.45
Chris Dudley -1.45
Reggie Evans -1.49

Player TRB z-score
Wilt Chamberlain	6.48
Bill Russell 5.71
Moses Malone 4.44
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar	4.30
Artis Gilmore 3.93

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf	-1.18
Steve Kerr -1.19
Hubert Davis -1.19
Craig Hodges -1.23
John Paxson -1.24

Player AST z-score
John Stockton 7.65
Jason Kidd 5.51
Steve Nash 4.50
Mark Jackson 4.49
Magic Johnson 4.38

Andrew Lang -1.22
Ervin Johnson -1.24
Serge Ibaka -1.24
Chris Dudley -1.24
Nazr Mohammed -1.24

Player STL z-score
John Stockton 5.66
Jason Kidd 4.34
Michael Jordan 3.96
Gary Payton 3.80
Maurice Cheeks 3.49

Player BLK z-score
Hakeem Olajuwon 6.14
Dikembe Mutombo 5.16
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar	4.97
Artis Gilmore 4.95
Mark Eaton 4.75
John Stockton's 15,806 assists come out as the biggest outlier. It's the equivalent of scoring 52,041 points, grabbing 27,418 rebounds, 4,147 steals or 4,657 blocks.

z-score = (stat - average) / standard deviation

The vocal and style range of Rob Halford on the 1970s albums seems impossible. He's like an operatic, demonic chameleon. Then a sullen and downtrodden choirboy, then a shrieking bird of prey. It just doesn't make any sense.

PS People literally trying to imprison the band for subliminal lyrics in 1980s hysteria continues to get funnier in hindsight.
