Is Donald Fair still running things for the PA? I know management will always come out on top over labor, but at least him seemed like he caught the owners off guard by being competent and didn't let the players get their poo poo handed to them too badly.

Finally, I would've probably preferred a bridge deal of some sort but $5.5Mish isn't bad. With management's talk of the Sedins' future this week, I wouldn't be surprised if they announce the contract at training camp and have Henrik hand Horvat the C.

I would've thought a bit less given the Wennberg contract but if they get 8 years that makes sense.

Yeah, Wennberg sorta set the market and I figure after that it was just a matter of exact term and dollar figures for the Canucks and Bo. Horvat and him are fairly similar players at this juncture, but Horvat gets the bad team's future captain bonus and Wennberg takes the upcoming cup contender discount.

Theo Fleury wrote a song that is on the Madden 18 soundtrack

reminder that he had 74 points and 270 PIMs in 34 games in the EIHL during his comeback.

i like to think that season consisted entirely of him alternately bullying and then scoring on much larger men

thank god this footage exists although it tragically only shows the aftermath of him beating up some poor 6'3" swedish guy

I have vague recollections of Fleury trying to climb out of the penalty box to fight the crowd at some point. I also always thought it was really funny that Fleury was on, specifically, the Giants.

Why do teams keep insisting on hiring former fan favourites into incredibly important managerial roles despite the fact that they have no experience in the role and often less than a highschool education? Sakic is a flat out terrible GM who clearly has no idea what he's doing. You'd think that the Avs would've learned that lesson already with Roy (who at least had management experience in the QMJHL), but I guess not.

I also like that Thomas Vanek is #5 on that trade bait list despite the fact that he signed with the Canucks a week ago.

The NHL, as with every other organization in life, is an old boys club.

Merit matters so much less in the business world than who you know. That's how it has always been, and always will be. Organizations that make decisions based on other factors are the rarity, not the norm.

Of course, but there seemed to be some sense to it until recently. I understand hiring former players to be scouts and stuff or offering the GM role to a player who learned the ropes as an AGM or in the minor leagues, but just giving the most important position in the organization to a dude who's hideously unqualified? That seems like a recent terrible move that came coupled with the shift to fan favourites as Presidents thing, and it's just so stupid. Is there one example of a former player with no managerial experience who came back to his old team and didn't immediately mess things up horribly?

Well Yzerman hasn't had a chance to ruin Detroit yet but he'd probably be an example of an actual good GM who probably shouldn't have just been handed a GM job.

But yeah it is dumb, no doubt about that. Most of these former players have high school educations at best and little to no experience doing real work. Maybe teams are looking at Yzerman and thinking they can catch lightning in a bottle too with their former players?

Not looking forward to the day Bill Guerin is Penguins GM but at least he has been working as an AGM for a while and might not be a complete disaster.

Stevie is legitimately a smart guy, very curious, and a forward thinker. He isn't running the team like teams he played for, for obvious reasons.

I'm a go and say I would vastly overstimate my abilities as a GM and would probably be crushed by the reality of having to deal with a bunch of early-20s millionaires blowing their money on cars, booze, and drugs getting an attitude about how and who they want to play with really loving up a monstrous amount of negotiations and contract signings. You play with a lot of people with absolutely lovely attitudes and personalities in small-town dek hockey leagues, I can't imagine what it's like when it's a bunch of young people who have always felt better that everyone on the teams around them suddenly trying to grow up in the NHL around everyone being better than them.
