This new hire has set off a shitstorm. I mentioned it to the HR person and for once instead of her usual fake sunshine & roses she was genuinely pissed off. It turns out the CEO spontaneously hired him without first speaking with the consultant or general counsel, the two people who have been trying to fashion themselves as operations gatekeepers. So now HR is pissed, the consultant is pissed, the department head this new guy works for is pissed. Everyone involved is angry, except me. This pleases me.

Brief interlude from DT's more interesting story. Is it acceptable to unmute on a confererence call, yell "Shut up. Shut up. Shut your loving mouth. Stop talking. Shut. Up." and then go back on mute? Answer quickly please. For those of you who live and die by my posts, you know that I adore one of the PMs I work with, and the other one is useless. I've been on three calls with the useless one so far today and I'm just completely done with this guy. For anyone who might be heading to a position of leadership in their career, whether with direct reports or as a PM, please know this. Talking isn't leading. Talking is talking. If you're holding the floor for 3 and 5 minutes at a time during a conversation, you are ineffective.

I guess it could be one of those magical "saying what everyone was thinking" moments but since you seem to mostly like your job... Actually, I guess I should ask first: what sort of conference call is this? Is there some possibility that such an outburst would be met with "Who was that?" and a bunch of silence?

We have a new PM in the building. I have no idea what she does or what projects she is assigned to. But when I walked by her desk, she had something work-related on her monitor, which is more than I can say for the other PM, who as far as I can tell has done basically nothing at all in the year+ he's worked here.

Wrath of the Bitch King posted:Ah yes, the incredible overhead of certificates and port 443. How will we overcome? Oh, it can happen. I am the local network specialist for my company that manufactures and services copiers, and sometimes I have to go into the field to deal with bizarre issues. One of which was a software program which was installed onto a PC and hooked up to a copier that was supposed to be used for people that were sight and hearing disabled so they could operate the copier. It was pretty cool, except that it was a beta that was never fully released and nobody at corporate had ever heard of it before. Oh, and it didn't work. Even though we had sold it to a national organization that helped people with disabilities. If you used this program to do anything it would either timeout and crash the copier, or it would work after an absurd delay of around 30 seconds. Since the only documentation was Google Translated from Japanese and didn't have any information other than 'install this', I started digging into the configuration files. After a few hours of fruitless testing, I saw that the software was connecting to the copier over port 443 and was set to communicate via SSL. I decided to disable SSL and try port 80. Suddenly it was speedy and worked perfectly. The lesson I learnt that day was 'Never underestimate how poorly software can be coded'.

Had a weird one come across my desk that is starting to piss me off. A 2TB Samsung HDD that seems healty, no issues copying files to another drive. Tests fine in Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. But will NOT format, even doing a compelete format which took 13 hours ended with the exact same file structure (and the files are there and not corrupted). I can delete files manually through explorer but once I power cycle the drive - they all come back with old Volume name and all files. It's an NTFS Partitioned drive that was just for data - not the boot disk.

Dear God, this. As much as I love my new boss, I hate her for this. We have had two hour-long meetings to decide what will go into the training we deliver to support regarding the new version of our software, which is longer than it would take to actually compile training material for every change being made in the new version of our software. And after all that, she decided she would go through the release notes herself and decide - and guess what, it's almost identical to the list we compiled earlier! At least she is good about the meetings themselves- if they are scheduled for an hour, they end after an hour, no matter what.

VMWare upgrade from 5.0 to 6.0 on Cisco UCS. VAR sees it only has a single SD card, want to upgrade to 2 cards. Maintenance window started at 9 PM, SD cards won't build a raid, sync utility wastes an hour and then fails at 1 AM. Maintenance window is now stretching into 3 AM. Yaaaay! edit for the sleeping people; still camping out at 4:20. Services are starting to come back online, finally. SD cards never RAIDed and we're running off a single card. Boy I love working 11AM to 4PM, then 9PM to 5AM. What a wonderful schedule. E2: everything was working, then the doofus who was too tired tried to make a few improvements. Now critical systems are down and the guy can't figure out how to unfuck it. Welcome to 6 AM everybody. Judge Schnoopy fucked around with this message at 11:17 on Sep 6, 2017 |

Yeah no, the project scope is upgrading call manager from 8.6 to 11.5 including migrating from a 2821 router to a 4331, with an underlying ESXi upgrade from 5.0 to 6.0. Not only do I not possess the knowledge to do the upgrade, I think it would be wholly irresponsible to just "do it myself" without contracting professional services.

You'd also be saving money and that's all someone in your role should be shooting for. I'd be kicking all of those companies out of there and building a staff. You might find yourself in a really weird career purgatory. People who aren't doing all their own work as the only IT person on staff wind up being kinda worthless - they've never managed anyone and they're light years behind technically because they've spent their time 'supporting the business'. So when the time comes to look for a new position your options are limited to roles that basically boil down to vendor management, which at large companies might not even strictly be an IT concern.
