Take that you bastard.

This is outside Singapore, they are getting cocky here.

Their subs are out of control!

The destroyer swings north.

Flak gets another liberator.

Betties! Shame we lost a few. But the fact they are down here is a good sign!

This ASW patrol goes wrong.

We get a hit on one of their ships.

We force these troops into retreat.

The number of enemy subs I getting painful. This is when the war is going to get very tough.

It's getting brutal out there.

(*No worlds were harmed in the making of this title.)

Is the ship database in the second post only ships that have been seen so far in the LP, or have I managed to go almost two god damned years without realising that my lucky submarine, the I-178 isn't actually represented in WitP. Which would be weird considering there's a bunch of glorified trawlers with depth charges welded on, but I should never underestimate my own capability to be a dumbass.

It's the first option, only ships that have been actually sighted. My lucky ship has also never appeared in this LP, and the odds of one of the most famous destroyers the IJN had not being in the game is, uh, low.

What's funny is that one of the more popular mods for WITP is dedicated to adding even more janky-rear end trawlers that the original left out, for even higher fidelity.

This is not going to be nice. Brace for impact lads.

No! don't go for Effete! They all sink down there!

We get one hit in.

We see a large air fight in Burma.

We lost a number of plane today, but it's the subs that are going to kill me.

Does the game let you have any harbor defenses? Like at all? Because ow. And good luck if there's any way remotely to boost merchant production or ASW Destroyers. You're gonna need 'em.

You can set an ASW task force to patrol only a harbor hex, a useful task for shorter-legged ships like SCs. Also, minefields are a thing that may help. Lay one in a friendly harbor, and it will last a while. Even longer if you have a ship classified as an ACM in port (disbanded, not in a TF) to tend to it.

Lord Koth

Honestly, it just seems really gamey mechanics and it probably shouldn't even exist, only being effectively mindless busywork for human players to make sure each individual harbor has the right boxes checked. Even without actual trawler patrols of a harbor, doing something like this is absolutely suicidal because there are plenty of eyes around that can potentially spot a periscope, and harbors tend to be shallow and constricted enough that even lovely IJN ASW procedures should have an easy time finding and killing one.

I'm honestly having trouble finding any example of an actual harbor attack by a proper submarine, rather than something like throwaway minisubs or infiltrated frogmen, aside from Prien's sinking of Royal Oak and am coming up blank. Even that attack was considered insanely risky, and Scapa Flow is both enormous and has multiple huge entrances, as opposed to the harbors being hit here.

I mean, go find a picture of Rabaul's harbor in particular - it'd be absolute suicide for a sub to enter and conduct an attack against a ship docked there.

wedgekree

Yeah, on the other hand this seems to be about par for course for this game when it comes to the UI. Actively figuring out how ASW works and effectively doing such without a massive amount of tedium and estimation of where enemy subs are so you can maneuver your own ASW assets to counter them, of which the ocean has thousands of hexes and you can have dozens if not hundreds of ASW assets.. I mean, this is a grog game, but the actual mechanics of it once you get past the AI seem highly repetitive - make sure each of the dozens of bases have supply, convoys, oil for fleets, escorts for ASW, planes set to proper CAP and resupply, setting the physical altitude for them..

Kudos to Grey for playing the game so well, but more importantly doing so in an entertaining way and showcasing this game and the process of it without getting bogged down, and also making it amazing to follow.

Grey will win the game in 1945 at this rate, but his Japan would go on to lose the war, I'm guessing in the first half of 1947.

I'm doing better than historically (and the AI)

I like to think you can see how much better I am at the game by the losses this time around, I've been a lot more cautious with my ships.

The UI and airframes not withstanding, I'm down to silly mistakes from trying run and report a war at the same time.

I just imagine that after all their surface losses the USN has decided to tell their subs to be as suicidal as possible if they think they can get kills on Japanese ships.

This game is making Destination Tokyo look less like a propoganda film and more like a documentary.

In addition, all the major harbors had anti-submarine nets. Are they in this game?

How do we know that the ships being targeted in the harbour hex are literally being shot at their moorings and not being sniped as they come near or they leave the harbour? These hexes cover a lot of area.

This thread has me playing Silent Hunter IV again. Last night I hit a convoy off Formosa and started north to patrol the Formosa Strait and hit a large task force. Two fleet carriers, two escort carriers, a heavy cruiser, and some destroyers.

I sank both fleet carriers and I survived. The game crashed as I was returning to Pearl Harbor. D:

The first few minutes of a turn are getting to be the most stressful at the moment.

When my convoy defence ships do react, it's often after the fact. To late to save another precious ship.

Tarawa is now an allied fortress.

I'm a bit annoyed my carriers didn't make a strike at Tarawa, but it's probability better for my plane pools.
