thanks admiralbahroo is chill and yes this game version he's doing is crazy

being new at this game i had a completely ridiculous mission defending south africa's resistance fighters. team of five, i lose my best ranger to an unlucky crit, and, having never seen a muton before or knowing what it was, decided to use my recently promoted templar to finish one off melee, and oh turns out you can't do that. the entire first group of civilians got killed while my guys got beat on. however my new dark event was the lost on any level, so in the middle of this misery one of the purifiers blew up a barrel and summoned a lost swarm, which turned everything into a complete clusterfuck. with the chaos though it turned around for me, my guys barely come out on top, and somehow three resistance fighters in the corner put up this unbelievably strong defense, and by the time i got there i only had to help them with a soldier and a faceless, winning the mission outright.

what i'm saying is anyone considering xcom2 and its expansion should probably buy both and play both, it's great fun don't be a wuss

It has the same ADVENT "nerfs" that surgical does, so I'm pretty sure it's just that those nerfs are not nearly in tune with the restriction. Those two are pretty much going to be no-gos for me. I don't use balance mods besides bugfixes, but if I was going to mod for balance I would definitely make the "light threat" reduction more severe, because it's hardly noticeable at the moment.

Keep up to date on their weapon and feed them early mission kills. Focus is up to +3 damage once you get the +1 max focus perk and their attacks can't miss (except against Mutons :argh:)

A ranger with bladestorm and reaper doesn't need to be fed kills throughout the mission and also can't miss.

Once they focus up, Templars can do a shitton of melee damage (more than Blademaster Rangers IIRC once you hit the third focus point, and they have an automatic 100% hit chance except against Mutons right from the start) and the combination of Parry, Deflect and Reflect means that once they hit high focus they can stand right out in the open and not give much of a poo poo. (Parry means the first attack against the Templar fails automatically. Deflect at 3 points of focus means a 50% chance that a hit from shooting will just glance off. Reflect at 3 points of focus means a 50% chance that a shot hitting him goes right back to sender.) And then you get to Major rank and get Arc Wave and now all your Rend attacks are area-of-effect. The focus-using abilities are kinda interesting, but I've found them pretty situational compared to just keeping up the focus bar and rampaging around.

Abuse parry. Parry is broken and lets you cheese tons of encounters by putting the Templar in a position where they will get targeted. I'm gonna have to not give them it on my impossible run because its just gross. Reposistoning with momentum is a lot more tactically interesting without letting you abuse the AI. Excluding parry, give them a mobility PSI and try to put them on +mobility OPs. This makes it much easier for them to build up focus with rend safely.

I imagine the reason you think Templars aren't strong if you've recruited one late and he doesn't have much in the way of skills. Templars are pretty weak if you can't one-shot enemies for easy focus. Once you get the skills that make them gain focus as random drops and start with it, it becomes much easier to build up focus so you can utilize their abilities more.

AOE Rends sound alright, but I really just can't get over having to take two or three turns to build a guy up when most of the missions I've been playing have combat that usually doesn't last longer than two or three turns. When you couple that with the fact that the Templar can't dodge overwatch shots I'm just not sure how to get one to maximum focus, let alone actually allow him to get more than one hit in at max unless I'm intentionally dragging the mission out. I've had my Templar for months now and he's been on nine missions, but rarely gets more than two kills and usually winds up in the infirmary for a week afterwards. Maybe I've just had lovely RNG with the defensive abilities.

I mean, a fight with a pod will usually last two rounds and its easy to get a minimum of one focus off each pod. With skills you start with one focus, so that would be 2 pods to get your focus built up to max. That's assuming no psi focus drops; with a drop and a kill you'll be at max after one pod.

Maybe it's a difficulty thing, then. This is my first Xcom 2 playthrough so I decided to start with Veteran, but I could see how longer fights at higher difficulties would make the Templar more worthwhile.

I built the Hypervital Module for my Infirmary.

It takes 80 supplies and 2 power to build, then it turns out you need an Elerium Core for every soldier you want to Full Restore, and you can only restore any particular soldier once per campaign. And the soldier isn't even healed for good, they just bounce back for one mission and then return to how they were before.

Totally useless.

Hypervital is there for the highest priority missions only, and the one guy you need present is nursing wounds in the infirmary.

Woah, Templar clones get everything the Templar has. Including Reaper.

Also, Templars with Reaper are fantastic- once you upgrade Rend to have aoe, you can soften up one or more additional enemies with every kill, so the diminishing returns aren't nearly as much of a factor. I just had mine take out 5 chryssalids and 8 Lost.

Not to broken up about it, but I did want to see what the Chosen do in the final mission if you leave them alive.

You know, as more customization mods come out that support the resistance classes, more and more I'm going to be wishing for a mod like RM's old mod that forced soldiers to randomize into default armor appearances, cause that doesn't work with WotC anymore.

It's really annoying and jarring to have to go in and re-customize all my soldiers whenever I upgrade to a new tier of armor due to half of them turning into a mismatched mess of mod-added bodyparts.

Whether or not the UFO intercepts you is apparent determined on its spawn and has nothing to do with your movements. All the evasive movements are just for show.

Which of course makes it all the more stupid that ace pilot Bradford doesn't actually evade and instead patiently waits for the UFO to crash into you.

Never had the game crash from me using the skirmisher's grapple but I've definitely seen it do some weird poo poo. Stuff like Advent generals floating in the air aftering being pulled forward or the skirmisher zooming past the grapple target and floating off into the distance.

The skirmisher's abilities in general seem buggy, which sucks cause its my favorite new class. Probably the closest one to being balanced too.
