Tornadoes are so much worse than hurricanes.

Hurricanes have strong winds but they’re relatively consistent and level. Palm trees care about hundred‐knot winds over the ground. Planes don’t.

Tornadoes are chaos. Planes have trouble when the wind speed changes ten knots second‐to second or wing‐to‐wing. Strong updrafts and downdrafts are also ruinous.

OK, but hurricanes wipe out areas counties at a time, not quite as thoroughly as a tornado, but tornadoes are a bit more focused. Also, if it's Harvey, it comes with a shitload of tornadoes inside of the hurricane.

Boom lifts are fine to stand under, if they're being used properly. They're not like excavators, even if the hydraulics failed they can't come crashing down. Otherwise they wouldn't be safe to go up in, either.

I'm meat on the hoof

In the early 1960's, authorities were considering another airport in the NYC area. They apparently briefly considered using a hydrogen bomb to level out a mountaintop for part of it.

"According to an Oct. 29, 1964, article in the New York Times, "among the ideas that had been considered for blasting out the mountain ridges was the use of hydrogen bombs. "The nuclear idea had been dropped on the grounds that it was impractical and would cause too many adverse side effects. According to the study, included among the difficulties, would have been the evacuation of an area within a radius of 15 miles, during blasting and the required decontamination period afterward when there were the unknown effects of radiation of the region's watershed." In an Oct. 29, 1964, New York Times article written by Edward Hudson, it was predicted that, "the proposed jetport project at either site would be dropped as too costly.
"The report of the bi-state agency to both the New York and New Jersey governors, a major airport at Bearfort Mountain would cost $820 million and $764 million at Bowling Green Mountain. In comparison, it had spent $420 million to develop the John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens."

:thunk:
Yes, you see, boom lifts have these things called safety systems.

Safety systems stands for S-A-F-E. If they weren't safe, why would anyone let some random person drive it after watching a 20 minute computer based training module?

Go ahead, turn it off and rip out the hydraulic pump, it'll be the safest it can ever be. Got to be moving to be dangerous you know, that's simple science.

This is the OSHA thread, in what possible world are boom lifts being used properly? That's the sort of "if" this entire thread is making fun of.
