Bertrand Hustle posted:

Basically every experience with Canada geese I've either had personally or heard about has been that they are just complete fuckers. If a goose has babies nearby or is looking for food or just takes a fancy to that patch of grass you're standing on, it will bite the poo poo out of you or just beat you about the face and head with those goddamn wings.

Don't gently caress with geese. If they're well-behaved it's just because they haven't gotten around to hating you yet.

I've been honked at angrily, but I've never actually been attacked. That may be partly luck, but it's also partly having the basic situational awareness to think "huh, one goose is sitting down and one is standing. That might be a female incubating eggs and a male standing guard. maybe I shouldn't walk right by them."

When people talk about getting attacked for no reason I think of a guy I knew growing up who talked about getting stung by bees totally unprovoked. I took him at his word until I saw a bumble bee pass within like two feet and he spazzed the gently caress out. Full on :supaburn:

Animals aren't robots, but they're also not capricious demons. If you get routinely harassed by some kind of critter, you're doing something wrong and failing to learn from the experience.

Same, TBH. Even when I go out of my way to deliberately antagonize them, they just waddle away. I'm beginning to think the local geese are just defective.

If the geese are nice, why do you go out of your way to deliberately antagonize them?

1. I was a child and therefore an rear end in a top hat.
2. Experiment, to see if I can actually get them that pissed off.

I never actually tried to hurt them, just to scare and annoy them. Even when I got between them and their goslings, they just tried waddling faster to get away from me.

I'm inclined to agree in most cases, but mosquitoes must seek me out because they know I'm allergic to them and they hate me, specifically.

I'm A-, I dunno what the gently caress.

And I became allergic to their bites in the past two years or so (a condition with an astoundingly colloquial-sounding name). Now when they bite me it swells up about ten times the size that bites used to. I got a bite on my ankle this summer and it looked like I had broken the drat thing.

Anyway cute stuff.

you clearly live in some pussy rear end bullshit canadian town because canadian geese mind their loving manners in my hometown

- they're quiet
- they're chill
- they watch out for traffic
- they use the crosswalks (not a joke)

for all of my life, I thought canadian geese were normal birds, if a bit oversized but now I'm hearing that everybody is terrified of them and frankly I don't get it

maybe its because the people in my state shoot at birds for fun and the geese know that they're on notice

I'm not terrified of them, they're just assholes. They do none of those things here.

I've seen them try to nest on the green area next to a sidewalk and threaten anyone on the sidewalk, and 'not walking sort of vaguely near them' is not an option because that's the only sidewalk on that street. They don't usually attack, but they make a lot of noise, hence 'rear end in a top hat' rather than 'menace'.

They also don't need to be nesting, or in pairs, to claim territory. Up here, they sometimes decide that a puddle in the parking lot is theirs, and thus the entire section of parking lot is theirs. I've seen them attack (both parked and unparked) cars to try to get them to back off. God help you if the puddle sticks around long enough for them to try to nest near it. They really like the grass next to parking lot puddles, as it turns out.

I live in Alberta, and nearish a park with a pond, which I presume encourages them. (They are usually just fine near the pond though; it's when they go elsewhere they become assholes.) Maybe it's different where you guys are.

Edit: actually the very best was the time one nested in the greenery next to a strip mall and wouldn't let anyone in the store on the end without a threat display.

That's Franklin. Seen here helping me do some mixing yesterday:

He got really stressed with the move to Japan and basically licked all of the hair off of his belly and lower legs. He's stopped licking now that we've settled in, but he grows hair very slowly so he's just going to look like this for the next year or so:

And yeah, he splays out like that pretty much all the time.
