Oh wow, two minutes ago I figured out that Don Cheadle is not a fat white comedian from back in my parents' day. I'm not sure who I thought he was.

In the original Star Trek episode The Corbomite Maneuver, navigator Bailey goes off when Balok threatens to blow the ship up and he perceives that Kirk and the others aren't doing anything about it. He's relieved and goes off sulking to his quarters. Just before Balok's countdown is almost over, and the Enterprise looks like it's about to be destroyed, Bailey quietly comes back to the bridge and asks permission to resume his post. When I watched this episode as a kid, I just thought it was nice that Bailey had regained control of himself. What it took me until fairly recently to realize was the fact that Bailey returning to his post was his way of showing his devotion to duty. Even in the face of what seemed at the time like certain death, he was willing to go back to the bridge, sit at his station, and do his duty like a mature officer. To be fair, I grew up with TOS as a kid and missed many subtleties like this.

Besesoth posted:Meanwhile, "Luigi", "Louis", and "Ludwig" are all basically the same name in different languages - and "Ludwig" was first. Those are all modern interpretations of the same name and none of them were "first" Besesoth posted:I still run into people who pronounce it "mare-ee-oh" as though it hasn't been 20 years since "it's-a me, Mario". Because there are irl alive people right now who are named Mario and pronounce it that way Besesoth posted:...please tell me you don't think pronouncing the first "a" as in "hat" is the correct pronunciation. Both of those are loanwords from languages that don't have that sound. A butter face is short for "but her face" as in she looks good...but her face. It doesn't mean someone who's face looks like it's made of butter. I always thought it was just a way of saying someone had a fat ugly face.
