Reading this discussion as a foreigner in a country where there's only negative credit reports (i.e. you can only have "bad" credit, and the lack thereof is automatically "good" credit), this whole thing where you have to dutifully take out a credit card and use credit to have the right to exist as a valued citizen and get things like an apartment is really hosed up.

Landlords aren't allowed to discriminate based on the things they really want to, but credit score is a pretty useful justification to deny leases to "those types".

I started enrollment but it told me my enrollment date is in a few days.

My credit score is over 800+ so I am really loving worried.

As long as it doesn't track who buys guns.

Hot take: Will the Equifax leak end up a net positive for the country? I'm convinced this poo poo's been leaked over and over again and people either don't know or keep their heads in the sand about it but it's a bit harder to ignore this time around.

Hopefully it'll also push people to get credit freezes -- me included. Normally there may be a fee (up to $15 for each of the four major credit bureaus) to place a fee unless you think you've been breached but let's face it, you've been breached.

Further down the line it'd be nice if this triggered a push for something other than SSNs for verification, but that'll be for another administration I'm sure.

So in my limited understanding, freezing your credit costs money (as in $10-$15 for each of the three major companies, depending on your state), but declaring a fraud alert is free (but not as secure). And that many states mandate free credit freezes when you can show proof of identity theft. Would this event constitute identity theft? Is it worth it to pay $30 for a freeze?

Credit freezes are good to prevent new lines of credit, but they won't prevent your identity being used in all kinds of other nefarious ways.

$30 seems like a small price to pay for your credit score which is arguably one of the most important things out there. I am going to do it as soon as I get home (can't do it from office).

Also side story, the last apartment I moved into only had me pay a half deposit on my place because my credit score was so good :toot:

This is good advice. The website where you enroll seems so slapdash an answer, as if they had just gotten wind of this. They had five weeks to prepare and this is the best you can do? Reminiscent of REPEEL AN REPLASE - you had seven years to plan for this.

There has to be a thread for this right? Because where the US healthcare system is hosed up it is at least conceptually hard to fix, the US credit system though is just predatory bullshit with clearly extralegal powers. Reforming it encounters some vested interests, but I am not that sure they are that powerful ones. Wall Street should certainly be fine with reforming that stuff, getting a pool of people who can buy on margin if they want.

Oh and apparently fees can get really outrageous in some states because #statesrights

Live in a red state? You're probably going to pay $10-$20 every time you want to lift or renew your freeze. Does your rental car agency want to check all three companies? That's $60.

Get a credit card with a really tiny limit and just pay it off every month so you have some payment history in the event you need a car/home/whatever loan.

Still the Dems should be cautious about any support they get from Trump. Trump doesn't care about Dem causes or Repub causes, just making himself look good, and he will throw anyone under the bus to get ahead. He is really a monster that has gone beyond the control of his creator.
