My favourite thing is speeding through a thread and being able to tell without checking the name an IFM post. I've recently been watching some Georg Rockall-Schmidt, and he gives me the same vibe as a Shaun video. Very soothing to have on and can be pretty informative. Also his lamp is cool

poparena posted:New Doctor Who Book Guide, this time on "Deceit" by Peter Darvill-Evans, one of those books where everything about it is really interesting except the actual story. Oh hey, I remember Beneath Nightmare Castle. It was a lot more Lovecraftian than the rest of the series, with all the mutant abominations running around. That was cool. It was also the only Fighting Fantasy book to have one of its illustrations banned for being too frightening, although there was more than enough horrific stuff in the text itself to scare me as a young kid. For some reason I was under the impression that the guy who wrote it never did anything else for FF, but in retrospect it makes total sense that he’d be responsible for Portal of Evil as well.

That comparison goes pretty deep, too - Amuro Ray, the hero of the early Gundam shows, and his great rival Char Aznable had a very similar pop-cultural impact to Kirk and Spock, which the creators didn't exactly go out of their way to dissuade.

This is pretty good! I was born a little too late to be in the target audience for these, but I find wilderness stuff super interesting. Minor nitpick though, "Wycombe" is actually pronounced similarly to "wiccan"; a lot of British place names (especially old ones) have less than obvious pronunciations.

Depends whether you think racism as a codified ideology (as opposed to simply 'people from other cultures are weird and scary') was created during the Enlightenment to morally justify the Atlantic slave trade. There's actually some decent arguments for it.

If we're thinking of the same essays on the topic I think you're thinking of white supremacy vs general racism, which many historians argue formed as an actual doctrine rather than a general 'I like people like me' thing around that time from the ashes of nationalistic schools of thought to justify colonialism and slavery and all.
