I'm surprised that in 2017 we've been relying on the honour system regarding the use of a finite natural resource. Would meters be much better, though? How easy is it to tamper with a meter when there's noone around to see you do it?

Extremely. Even if wasn't you can just bypass the meter. These things are always going to rely on an honours system and citizen surveillance to some degree.

A yes vote will be accompanied by months of the Coalition trying to grant private businesses extensive rights to discriminate against gay couples. However nasty it's gotten so far is only a preview of what's to come. The goal has always been to set up "gay marriage" as an institution separate from and inferior to marriage between heterosexual couples. This is the hill that they will die on.

Apropos of nothing here's an interesting thing I learned today: university is no longer free (like it should be) but the government still pays, depending on the course, about 2/3rds the cost of a degree. The remainder they give you a HECS loan for. I've had a HECS debt for literally ten years and never realised the government paid for the majority of my degree - I thought my debt was 100% the cost.

NBN came to hook up the parents today. They're getting HFC that the government bought off Foxtel, and the people who lived there had Foxtel in the farthest reach of the (long and narrow) house, and the NBN contractor told Dad they weren't allowed to change an existing drop and had to put the modem and phone there, where nobody would be able to hear it ring and no signal would reach most of the place. As opposed to the perfectly functional phone and ADSL they currently have in the lounge/kitchen. He cracked the shits at them, obviously unacceptable, now he's tossing up having to shout on the phone for days, having to get a sparky to come and rewire the coax on his own expense, or just saying gently caress it and staying on the (absymal half a megabit) ASDL. NBN! (Also looks like the hundred dollar shithouse router that iinet sold them saying that it was required to make the NBN work was not at all and the NBN will have an independent modem that can plug straight into the much better one we already have. We had no way of knowing this because we of course have no technical details and I had no idea if this was gonna be VDSL or Coax or something else) MikeJF fucked around with this message at 11:25 on Sep 11, 2017 |

Some routers can be rejigged to be WiFi repeaters to reach more of the house. Don't know about the VoIP it'll depend on what you can figure out from the firmware and how locked down it is by tpg G-Spot Run fucked around with this message at 11:28 on Sep 11, 2017 |

HFC is the worst bullshit right now but wait 5 years when it's been torn up for fibre, but a huge swath of Australians are stick on congested fttn, which neither party has the appetite to replace before 2025.

G-Spot Run posted:Some routers can be rejigged to be WiFi repeaters to reach more of the house. Don't know about the VoIP It's voip-to-the-NBN-HFC-modem and then you plug in a traditional phone to the modem and it's just basically PSTN-over-IP, so it's not an open protocol we can hack at like if it was true VoIP. I think? Like I said, they don't really give you any actual useful information, I'm just going by Dad's description of what they wanted to put in and how. Also, I'd really rather not add a bunch more pointless failure points, too; repeaters are relatively fragile and the folks aren't exactly technical without me around. If we hadn't had a preexisting Foxtel drop they'd have happily wired a new one to the middle of the house sensibly. Maybe we can accidentally rip it out. It'll be cheaper to have a cabler move it. If NBN charge the way Telstra do, it'll be between 120 and 300 funbux to have a technician come out and then call back to base and say ’customer at fault charge CPE Fee’.
