That might be a bit much. Check out the current creator line, there's some well made but not incredibly involved house sets in there right now. Maybe get him the modular for his 8th or 9th birthday.

I mean, yeah, the modulars are big, involved buildings, but I don't know if they're fun exactly for kids? I'd echo getting some of the Creator modular 3in1 sets for buildings.

The Sharks could be that Champion.
I guess that's kind of my question. He'll enjoy the set pieces they provide and it'll probably fuel some creative play, but it might just be too much. The problem with the regular Creator series buildings is they're too boring and easy for him. When my mom asked what he wanted he specifically asked for a set with over 1000+ pieces, and of the ones I filtered for her, she latched on to the modulars. That said, AS is definitely more involved than the others, and I also worry that it just sets totally unrealistic expectations for the future.

It's fine for him. My three year old routinely plays with my modulars and invents stories around them. It's basically a dollhouse, which people spend insane money on even compared to Lego. If she's okay spending that much then let her.

That's sort of what I was thinking/hoping, and his 4 year old sister would get a kick out of that, as well. It's just such a big freaking modular.

Do any of you have Assembly Square and any of the other modulars? Does the Square still have the same detailed touch despite being so huge?

Yeah. I have all the modulars and the Square is great. There's a lot packed into it so some of the interiors are a little small, but the advantage there is that there's something for everyone. Your daughter will enjoy the ballet room, the flower shop, etc.

I overheard a conversation at the Lego store in Munich Pasing today between a Lego guy and the mall manager.

Apparently Lego was unsure whether the MF would sell well due to the price point, but they were proven wrong. This local store stopped counting availability inquiries over the phone after 150 calls.
The guy told the manager:
Lego dude: "We have at least 50 people coming on release day and will organize a queue in front of the store."
Manager: "So over 50 people? Well how many units do you have in stock?"
Lego dude: "25"
Mall manager: *smiles the smile of an adult man laughing at the stupidity of people queuing for overpriced plastic and not getting it*

So I guess this thing is selling like hotcakes. However, after seeing it up close, it seems to have way more studs and looks more clunky than I thought, something seemed off compared to the pics, maybe they were not finished building it or something, but I am glad I saw it in the flesh. It actually looks not as nice as I thought and the will of spending 800€ on it has disappeared entirely.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not one to turn down a set like that, and it's not beyond his ability - he built the expert Ferrari almost single-handedly on his 4th birthday. But....it's extravagant af, and for those who have it: is it just too much for a 6 year old? My original suggestion for her had been the Parisian Cafe or Detective's Office, because he's expressed sudden interest in creating structures and building a micro-city on his lego pad (a 24x24 pad with a 20" square LEGO surface that I built for him). My mom just happened to see the "customers who bought this also bought" on Amazon and away she went down the rabbit hole. Thoughts?

My six year old prefers Lego Worlds to actual Lego at the moment. But if I was to get him a modular I would get the Bank one (I don't actually have it mind you). Because it seems to actually have a narrative in it to create scenarios plus I always think you need to give something for all the robbers and cops in lego to do. Too many of them with not much to actually break and enter in to.

Saying that, if I was going to buy a big set for him it would be the Temple of Airjitzu or that new ninjago city block modular thing. Seems to have a ton of playability.

Since you son is clearly a proficient lego builder, you can be confident that its not to hard. Modulars are the only sets in the house that belong to me, but I let my kids assemble and play with them, they just aren't allowed to break them down for parts. My son did Assembly Square before his fifth birthday. The only part he couldn't do himself was the rolling garage door window installation for the bakery. There's a ton of play value for 4-8 year olds with the set, IMO.

Having said that, my kids get by far the most milage and enjoyment out of the 3 in 1 sets. You should consider having Grandma get a series of related 3 in 1s. For example, if your kid likes airplanes, have her get 31066, 31064, 31047 and 31039. She'll still spend way less and the play value, build and rebuild, and ultimately the part variety will far exceed the Modular for a kid of that age.

I said it before, but my guess is that the Falcon will be swooped up by every Jortsman, reseller, and SW nerd with expendable cash for a few months, be hard as hell to find, and have absolutely comical listings online for thousands of dollars for that time. After that Lego will make a fuckload of them and think they have a hit with their $800 set, and the rest of them will sit and collect dust for a couple years and eventually even get marked down. The price will of course will sky rocket again once it goes out of production.

mark my words people.

Bring him to a Lego store or browse the site with him and see what he gravitates toward. It's his birthday, let him choose. Stay long enough for him to browse, then take note of what he goes and looks at after the "wow" wears off, that's what he wants.

Worth it for Green Grocer, Market Street, Cafe Corner. Things that are insanely marked up. Market Street is $50 from Lepin. $500 on ebay and was under $100 retail.

For things that are less than 2x retail, I'd say get the Lego version. This includes the Haunted House and most new things.

Basically anything that is still available: buy Lego. Anything that is within $100 or so of the original Lego retail, buy Lego. Quality is better and you are not really paying that much more.

My opinions only. How you spend your $$ is up to you.

Pretty sure there's no fixed number of Ideas sets they make so there's not really such a thing as taking another person's spot.

That said I do agree that if the fishing shack sells well they could consider just making it a series. A small village in that style would look pretty great.
