Wait didn't it just not work the first time because he had to input the code from booting up, like touch ID makes you? The next times he did it, it worked.

e: nvm, looks like its not the same error

Once TouchID works under the glass they will probably just be like "Hey we heard you all missed TouchID and hated the slow FaceID, so we brought it back!"

"Faceid" already works good on some laptops like the Spectre. If it's better than several current laptops then it'll be really good.

You assume they're opening that code to anyone, it appears to have the same locks around it that TouchID does.

The lack of subsidization is kind of interesting. The raw, unfiltered $1000 buttfuck of actual phone pricing will be difficult for a lot of people, regardless of means.

I've never had any problem reselling my iPhone for at least 60% of original value

Buy an 8 and use it while the early adopters buy the X and Apple smooths out the inevitable issues with it

The X really does look great, but the 6S is just so serviceable - I'm excited to see how that range progresses though once the older designs are phased out.

Exactly, I will happily buy an 8+ next week on a 12 month upgrade plan. Then if the next years model had TouchID and the other stuff I like I will upgrade again.

This was a minor plot point in a Black Mirror episode (S1E2).

But it's highly unlikely Apple will open it up to just any old rear end in a top hat.

You can disable faceID quickly by pressing the power button five times in iOS 11 (same for touchID as well).

I find it funny that they skipped 7S to try to mask the fact that 7 was just 6SS and 8 is 6SSS. Literally four years of incremental improvements (sometimes even regressions!) on the same design in a market that has changed rapidly around them. It's a drat shame they've been rewarded for their blatant coasting this whole time. Granted the software is usually a lot better than android but still, this feels like a day late and a dollar short.

I can tell you right now that six core cpu setup is pretty fricken impressive. IF you're in apple land there is a not-insignificant-but-really-should-be-7s QOL upgrades in the 8 if you 're looking from a 6/6s perspective.

All the stuff in the X is just playing catch up with the rest of the market: edge to edge screen, oled, wireless charging, face ID (sorta). Even the water resistance from last gen was just following the crowd (and they didn't have to lose the headphone jack to get it).

Decent OLED is ~5 years old, great OLED is ~2 years old. Apple have been behind the screen-quality curve a while.
OLED is the only new thing on X [the faceid is just a workaround for no touchid] so to say they're leading the "future of phones" whilst being literally the last flagship to adopt it, at a price-point way out-of-line with the industry, is.
Well, its a thing.

Design wise, they've tried to go bezel-less and their implementation leaves a lot to be desired. The top bar sticks into video, are you serious??

Doesn't look like they're doing anything actually cool with OLED either (like always on displays) instead calling "touch to wake" revolutionary.

Let me tell you about true luxury.

So a very few phones are bezel free now. A very few phones have oled screens. A very few have other features the Samsung high end model and iPhone have. The pixel is further behind. So the industry is basically one phone versus another phone with a few cheaper ones with massive trade offs. What was revolutionary about the new s8? Seems like we're well past the revolutionary phase of the industry and firmly sit in the incremental period.

Is it worth noting that rushing unreliable features to market doesn't get you bonus points for being first ("waterproofing")

I can appreciate your impassioned defense of stagnation in consumer electronics. On the other hand, 999 US Dollars for a phone that does not innovate, has a number of troubling compromises, and does not compare well with a cheaper flagship that came out 5 months ago is not a very compelling proposition to me.

You noticed that Apple's already touting their new GPU all over the place, I wonder if it's even faster than the PowerVRs.

Guess having the tie-in to machine learning is a plus (since I don't think the PowerVR chips even have that as a feature) but I'll reserve my judgement until someone does some graphic benchmarks; but note that Apple's not crowing about how their GPU is super de duper faster than 'that old chip.'

Doesn't compare well? Well that's like your opinion. Maybe you need every model year phone to be hugely better than it's competitor but that's not a healthy way to look at electronics. For me I choose based on a number of factors, one of which is the phone that literally laps its opponent in speed tests multiple times

Your biggest offender is always going to be images and video from a storage standpoint. If you sign up for a non-garbage tier icloud or google drive account, they get backed up at either near-quality or original quality. 64 gigs should last a long time if you practice the littlest of data hygiene.

How well does it work ?

Im not concerned about Face ID not working or recognizing my face

Im worried that we're gonna have to do exaggerated motions to unlock it like Craig did on the keynote, instead of calmly putting my finger on the home button while I'm not even looking at the device
