My intuition was that "no voters" were a real minority in Australia and the stats in the poll that was posted seems to confirm that.
I can't help but get the impression that more people seem to think the two sides are more balanced than the evidence suggests.

I got 4 surveys because the previous occupants of my lovely rental place didn't update their details.

What happens if i call the ABS and tell them I never got them and to send more? Can they tell if the first lot have been sent in and counted? What happens if more than one vote from the same person is counted and one is for yes and the other is for no? Which one do they go with?

If the polls are to be trusted, it's not really even necessary. The yes box (that it looks like all of us will be checking) is going to completely outscore the "no"s.
Additionally, for the "no"ers doing it for religious reasons, they'll surely be unlikely to change their minds owing to a leaflet and for those people complaining about feeling "bullied by the far left," I imagine they'll just look at the leaflet as a weird confirmation of all of that.

But I'll stop speculating. Of those 100 leaflets, how many NOs do you think you'll turn into YESes?

There's a pretty sizeable portion of people who are unsure, or who do care but not necessarily enough to vote. It's not just about convering a NO into a YES.

You can't really use this thread as a sample for the population at large. If we represented the greater Australian population then every election would be between the Greens and Labor with the LNP picking up a couple of seats.

I think it's fair to say that the "no vote" looks like it stands no chance. Good news.

I'm not attributing this to you, but the whole vibe that we (Australia) are riddled with neo-nazis and a homopobic majority just doesn't really seem to have much actual evidence supporting it.

Hopefully and probably the yes vote is going to romp it in. I think most of the worry comes from the fact this is a non-compulsory vote which is a out of the normal thing for Australia, along with the last 18 months showing that complacency about certain victories can seriously backfire.

Yes, this is no time for complacency. Even this postal survey is an attempt to manipulate the demographics and I'm sure they'll do everything in their power to skew the results as much as possible. Let's not have ourselves a Trump/Brexit situation.

We can't allow this to turn into propaganda for the No side by sitting at home and saying it doesn't matter. Everyone who is in favour of marriage equality needs to make sure that they vote. This is the opportunity to return a colossal Yes vote and ram it up Turnbull's arse.

I think Turnbull really does support SSM, it's just that he supports retaining lib leadership more. This plebiscite is happening because he won't risk upsetting the conservative fuckwits that inhabit the lnp.

Uh, Turnbull appears to be on the "yes" side of things.
At least as of now. I'm guessing he sees it all falling exactly the way I do - that the NO vote stands no chance.

quote:

Malcolm Turnbull throws support behind same-sex marriage

Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull threw his support behind the “yes” campaign with a surprise appearance to a gathering of supporters from the Liberal and National parties in Sydney.

Mr Turnbull’s surprise address to the NSW Liberals and Nationals for YES campaign launch in Sydney this morning came at short notice.

While the PM has consistently said he would vote in favour of same-sex marriage, he has been shy about confirming whether he would campaign publicly.

Addressing an enthusiastic crowd at the Australian Museum, Mr Turnbull said he was voting yes in the upcoming postal vote because “fundamentally this is a question of fairness”.

Mr Turnbull listed English-speaking countries around the world that have already legalised same-sex marriage.

“This change has already happened around the world,” he said. “Now, in any one of those nations has the sky fallen in? Has life as we know it ground to a halt? Has traditional marriage been undermined? The answer is plainly no.”

Of course, once everyone in your area is on HFC 18 months after it is first switched on and they turn off the old network then everybody will be congested all the time.

I see it as mitigating against a NO vote.

Marriage equality is happening, it's just a question of if we have to wait for a ALP government, enough LNP MPs to crack the shits and cross the floor or if YES passes and we get a conscience vote this year. So if YES passes it doesn't really matter if turnout was 50% or 200%, it's happening.

If NO passes, a 200% voter turnout weakens the case for NO despite the result and makes it easier to justify changing the law later on once we get a non-poo poo government.

Regardless of what happens a 200% voter turnout makes the people who demanded the survey take place look like a bunch of idiots and show the whole thing to be an expensive farce.

Forgive me if I don't trust the motives of the man who has compromised every single one of his convictions in order to continue hanging on to power. This plebiscite is itself a colossal waste of money in order for the Liberals to attempt to avoid doing their own jobs. Marriage equality is an issue for the floor of parliament. The fact that this survey is happening at all is in itself an insulting mess by a leader who has let the right wing nut jobs effectively run his party.

I don't care what side he "appears" to be on if he doesn't support his own convictions enough to rein in the party that he's supposed to be leader of. Why doesn't he push for this to be addressed on the floor of parliament like a true supporter of marriage equality would? Why won't he make a joint statement with Bill Shorten? Why won't he dispute the insulting false claims made by members of his own party?

The bigger the yes vote is the more Turnbull can be dismissed as doing too little too late. He's going to come out of this with the conservatives unhappy and the left giv8ng him zero credit for it passing.

I imagine that people who are opposed to SSM being confronted with the reality that they are in an absolute minority might do some good to shut them up in the long-term... unless they want to denounce the democratic spirit of a survey like this. People live in their own little echo chambers and a national yes vote of 60-80% is going to reality-smack more than a small handful of people.

If you and I are called faggots today to avoid us and others being mean-spiritedly called that in the future, that's a price I'm prepared to pay, but we're all different. That's fine. That's fair and I get it.

I just worry about how vitriolic and vocal the people who are opposed to SSM would be if they genuinely felt their voices weren't heard at all on the issue before it was settled. I seriously think things would be worse for longer, but I'll admit I'm just guessing.
