Just watched covenant, I think it's hilarious that these people have no protocol that prevents them from just diverting course to a new planet with thousands of lives at stake. I wanted to like it, but it had the same "everyone is a huge idiot but it's okay because it's intentional" vibe that Prometheus did. The scene where two characters slip on blood within a minute of each other could have been intense and scary but I half expected the Benny hill theme song to start playing. Also, what's the point of David's creation? The original weapon was some insane nano particle that could wipe out a whole civilization in a day and he spent years making a less efficient version that requires a mother, gestation, etc? The body horror of the alien ripping it's way out of the guy was great and then the rest is borderline slapstick. I get that these people aren't prepared to deal with this poo poo but I feel like there's a better way to handle it. I think a lot of it has to do with the cast being so bloated, they had to kill someone off every few minutes. Almost everyone was married too, like every character had to lose a spouse by the middle of the movie. And while I'm nitpicking the justification for going off course was bad. I can't imagine they'd have the authority to land somewhere else on a whim with thousands of people onboard just because they heard a garbled transmission. They pulled a quiet mutiny, just like the crew in The Martian. Except this didn't end with a cast sing-a-long to Love Train.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but the slapstick stuff felt like it was out of The Host or some other Korean film. I guess I'm still trying to process the movie because I went in blind. I was expecting Daniels to be the main character and something closer to a claustrophobic horror film. I liked the performances, the sets, the score, the body horror, and everything but the writing. Have you guys all been over this DVD feature?? The ~fan~ in me likes the added detail on the goo and the suggestion of the Queen, but it feels a bit like the sort of connective tissue Scott has no interest in. I wish we'd seen more of the horrific hosed up ecology on Paradise, I'm way more interested in that then more xenomorphs. Even more curious about exactly what happened between Prometheus and Covenant now.

What's so insane about this is that the characters WEREN'T huge idiots, even in Prometheus. They just didn't know ahead of time that chaos demons were real. That's all.

How did two people slip in the blood? Why didn't they just circumspectly and gingerly tip-toe around the bloody part of the floor before attempting to shoot the star beast which can literally crawl anywhere faster than your eye can follow it?

There were several aliens in this film. David/Walter and Daniels are the main characters. Most of the marines weren't married to each other, it's implied their partners, being only regular colonists, are still on ice. The crew clearly does have the authority to change course to explore better prospects, since that's what they do. General Battuta posted:Have you guys all been over this DVD feature?? I kinda dig it, but Phobos is clearly intended for the fans who were so vocally confused about David and the goo and demanded strict answers. It's a sop to people who can't be pleased in the first place. Unlike the Walter commercial and Last Supper and the Crossing, it's non-canon imo.

Elderbean posted:My expectations were pretty low. I expected an alien film, and the character that was all over the promotional material to have a bigger role. When you talk about expectations being "low", what you really mean is, "I only need the film to satisfy few requirements (x,y)" as opposed to "high" expectations which would be, "I need the film to satisfy many requirements (a,b,c,d,e,f,g,x,y,z)", before I can like the film. It's a checklist of what you "need" from the movie before it gets your stamp of approval. Prometheus... dumb scientists x infinity. X: Daniels would have a bigger role. Daniels was the second lead behind David/Walter. I mean, I honestly think Daniels had about as much screen time as she needed. How would more screen time help? Y: It would be an "Alien film" It is a film called Alien: Covenant, features not 1 but 2 Aliens very similar to the "classical" Alien, and also features 2 more Aliens, the Neomorphs. It also features an egg and a facehugger that are very similar to the "classical" egg and facehugger. What do you mean by "Alien film", anyway? Alien, Aliens, AlienCubed, Alien Resurrection, Alien vs Predator, Alien versus (|?) Predator Requiem, Prometheus... which of these is an "Alien film" and which is not. Watched Alien 3 Assembly Cut and Covenant recently. I loved Covenants ending and David as a villian but I'm not sure how well it fits into the continuity of the other movies. He won't be very successful, since no one has heard of or seen a xenomorph by the time Ripley encounters one in Alien and multiple planets have been colonized. He definitely perfects his creation but the company probably comes closer to loving over mankind than he does. Alien 3 is one of those movies I like reading about from a production standpoint. It seems insane to me that a studio could have so many directors, screenwriters, and reshoots while not really knowing what it is they really want. Considering all the production fuckery that happened, it's kind of amazing that even the theatrical cut of Alien3 ended up anywhere near as good and coherent as it did. David Fincher has straight up disowned the movie, and while his reaction is understandable given what he went through, I think he's letting his experience in making the movie color his perception of the finished product a little more than most. I think there's a lot of genuinely good stuff in Alien3 that he should be proud of, and it's unfortunate that he chooses not to be.

Also watched Ressurection. The scene where Ripley finds her failed clones is still creepy as gently caress and it feels like it's from a completely different movie. It returns to being shlock immediately after that.

General Battuta posted:It was canceled just in time to avoid the horrifically misogynistic mass rape plot they had coming up quote:She had this magic syringe. She would take this drug. And if she were, for instance, raped, the rapist would die a horrible death. The story was that she gets kidnapped by Reavers and when Mal finally got to the ship to save her from the Reavers, he gets on the Reaver ship and all the Reavers are dead. Which would suggest a kind of really bad assault. At the end of the episode, he comes in after she’s been horribly brutalized, and he comes in and he gets down on his knee, and he takes her hand. And he treats her like a lady. And that’s the kind of stuff that we wanted to do. It was very dark. And this was actually the first story that Joss pitched to me when he asked me to come work on the show. He said, ‘These are the kind of stories we’re going to do.’ Hahah, holy poo poo, gently caress Joss Whedon forever.

That plot sounds like a Game of Thrones thing. If Whedon never got his break on TV, he'd be writing space dungeon porn. Wasn't there a rape scene in Buffy too? I vaguely remember an interview with the frosted tips vampire where he said he was forced to do the scene despite vehemently protesting it.

No see guys it makes her a strong empowered female character because she uses her repeated rape to defeat the bad guys and fight back. And then she's treated like a lady. It's so empowering and emotional and we get these really feminist close ups of her bare bruised feet as they are supportively massaged in a very respectful and emotional way, Joss Wheadon is hyper-feminst guys.
