nessin posted:This is such a poo poo excuse. What was the worst the Republican's could respond with? You probably can't even find a total of five worse alternatives to Gorsuch for the Supreme Court. For the full duration of 2017, the time under which we could have had whoever Obama wanted to appoint, we get as close to the worst situation we could have all because Obama didn't want to push the issue a year out and snub the Republicans. And in a best case scenario the Republicans would have been so fractured under the Trump Presidency they wouldn't have been able to vote anyone else in and let Garland/whomever stay by default, which is basically the situation we're heading towards come Jan 2018 had Obama actually done it. It wasn't an excuse? It's my understanding of the process that recess appointments are not permanent, and the original asker is, if I recall correctly, Canadian. You can argue that Obama could or should have tried some kind of legal or political maneuvering as you described to circumvent this, but in terms of the way the process is meant to work, recess appointments are not permanent as far as I know. Also if you're going to remake the thread a "serious" title and OP might set a different tone of discussion, but if you don't want that then I don't see the point in doing a new thread.

The only break that Obama could have made a recess appointment in is the one Scalia died during and the net effect of it would be... Trump gets to appoint a judge on the DC circuit.

DNC topics of the moment are Bernie rallying establishment Dems to support a policy that was dismissed as impossible less than a year ago by Hillary, at the same time that Hillary is promoting a book largely blaming Bernie's championing of impossible policies for her loss. It's not possible to partition talking about the ideological divide between them from current Dem events. This thread was already a containment zone; trying to create yet another for Hillary criticism is just a sign that some posters don't want to acknowledge that criticism of the political approach she represents is pertinent to current policy and strategy. (It's because that approach is so undeniably embarrassing and unconstructive at the moment.)

yronic heroism posted:sick bern bro Well I guess if you lack an understanding of the concept known as "context" and the reasons why people in this thread say "democrats are a waste", then what ever the gently caress you posted might make sense. Edit: I'll even spell it out for you; if the Democrats had actually put their money where their mouth is and helped workers, the poor, the ability to unionize, decreasing foreign military engagements, etc, then this thread would almost certainly not exist. Bernie, while not exactly Lenin reborn, is currently leading the democrats to those ideals and actually fighting for them thereby putting them back on the right track. Before 2016, socialist policies were just crazy things those other people in every other developed country had. Now a few names who we'll almost certainly be seeing in 2020 are, crazy as it is, advocating for those same crazy things to happen here. Edit2: This for the tl;dr version. It's pretty much predicting doom and gloom for the party, nonsense posts about losing ground in the House next year, etc. If anything, events are showing the Democratic party as a whole is pretty responsive to its base. Not to be confused with loving naysayers who only moan rather than participate in any way other than maybe voting for Bernie (if they registered).

Your thread is loving stupid because it dismisses necessities of a functional society in the 21st century such as single-payer and free college tuition as 'ideological purity.' This thread has always worked for Democrat infighting—we don't need another one?
