Bookcases are IKEA Billy black-brown with an extra shelf on each. TV stand is just something I got from Target on sale and will eventually replace with matching IKEA one.

Also, more photos for those who like to spot stuff on shelves:

I think I'm already locked in because I did the Half-Way to Black Friday pre-order bundle. I think I'm going to shell out for the whole year pre-order come Thanksgiving :shepicide:

Seriously though, if you like getting Blu-Rays of movies that your friend's uncle would have had on VHS, and can deal with the occasional early 80's porn in 1080p, it's definitely worth biting that bullet.

I didn't realize the pre-order bundles included unannounced titles (at least I assume Liquid Sky hadn't been announced then since it was announced last month). May have to do that sometime.

I'm pretty sure it's just the yearly Black Friday pre-order, and back half of the year (Half-way to Black Friday) pre-order, because I didn't get the two they during the Half-Way sale, as I was only pre-ordering by the month at the time.

It is fun to get a bunch of movies in the mail every month though :)

Ahh gotcha. I really liked their pre-order bundle option its a neat idea. I debated doing the October package for a bit. I might just get Demon Wind though.

Not that I know of. If they do discounted bundles on Arrow then I have been missing the gently caress out because I buy them individually and like 5+ at a time.

Has anyone bought the German restoration of Suspiria? I'm seriously debating looking for and buying that one along with the synapse version since the colorings look so different.

No bundles, but Kino has an online store for their "Studio Classics" line (movies licensed from studios like Fox, MGM, and Paramount) and pre-orders are usually 50% off for a short time:
https://www.klstudioclassics.com

Free shipping on orders of $50 or more, too.

Also, I noticed that Amazon UK stopped selling Masters of Cinema releases to US addresses. Eureka still ships to the US, though.

I missed Black Friday, as I hadn't discovered Vinegar Syndrome yet, but since I got the Half-Way pre-order, I can speak for that.

Basically, On May 26 -29 of this year they had a sale, it incudes some secret and limited items, as well as the Half-Way pre-order. Basically I paid upfront for all of their Blu-ray releases from June until December. The nice thing about it is, I get all the limited edition stuff, and it usually arrives for me before the second week of the month. They had a couple options, I know there was an everything option, and a Blu only option. I suspect that the Black Friday package will be similar, but for the whole year instead of just the last half.

I wanna say I paid about $360/$380 for mine, but I can't find it right now. I get 2 or 3 (mostly 3) Blus per month depending, but October I will be getting 5, it all depends on their release schedule. I admit it is a bit of a gamble since it's a mystery what exactly you're going to get until a month or two out.

I've got this "problem" too, it's gotten bad enough that I've put a loose embargo on myself to not spend any money on more blurays unless it's a preorder of a movie in theatres (Alien Covenant, Wonder Woman) or a preorder on one of the Arrow/Shout Factory collector's editions.

I've been using the blu-ray.com app to keep track of which blus I've actually watched and which ones I still need to. I've also been "saving" all my horror movie purchases for October for Spooky Movie Month, so I've got a bunch of blurays that I haven't watched yet but I'm really looking forward to.

Learn 2 rip (use handbrake, it's not that hard) or buy good quality digital downloads. Buy a nice 4TB external drive. Keep physical copies of the films you really enjoy. I sold my entire collection off a few years back and have only purchased about 14 blu's since. Mostly criterion. Trying to be really selective with what I buy and keep as a physical copy. Doing this now will be worth it in the long run.

EL BROMANCE posted:

BestBuy we’re doing 8TB WD Red drives in enclosures for $150 a few weeks ago and it’s likely they’ll do it again. At that price, you can even skip using Handbrake and just remux the film (put disc in, load MakeMKV or similar, press go and you get a single file of the film with no encoding/quality loss).

I'll give Handbrake a shot. It's something I can do off and on for building a nice collection.

How big is the size difference for a remux? 10+GB?

Yeah I have a big ol stack that's going to be like half of my October marathon views. I sort my movies at home by ones I've seen and ones I haven't though so I haven't resorted to tracking them on bluray.com just yet.

MakeMKV tends to give you something around a 20 GB file for a Blu-ray, assuming you just want the film and not all the extras.

I'm finally taking an October off from spending money on blu rays and just allowing the collection I already have to do the job. I made a list and I have like 50-60 horror movies that I'd like to rewatch so it's not like I'm short on options.

Yeah most ‘movie only’ options with all the English soundtracks tend to go between around 18-35gb or so. The bigger ones tend to be the longer films that come in a 2 disc pack where all the extras are separate so you have a ton of room just for the movie.

You get the best pq and it’s the fastest way of doing it, but the trade off is the space consumed.

Any that I'd be unlikely to be able to pick up a few months from now? Like limited edition stuff? Aside from Suspiria, but that's not coming out in October anyway.

Egbert Souse

Finally got The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly... it's not the definitive edition, but best all around so far. The color is considerably improved, but Kino opted to use somewhat basic compression. Compression is blocky in shadowy areas. Oddly enough, it softens the image a little, making it not as harsh as the MGM disc. Also, most of the supplements are in the wrong frame mode, resulting in choppy video.

I'm guessing it'll probably take a UK label like Arrow to really do a definitive package. Everything I've seen from them so far has excellent compression - Zardoz looks almost miraculous considering the diffusion filters and heavier grain made it look like mush on DVD.

I think VS's October releases look pretty tight. Demon Wind, Blood Beat, Corpse Grinders, and Prime Evil w/ Lurkers thrown in. Tho looking at the details the only thing limited about them is going to be getting booklets with Demon Wind and slip covers for the other two. So not as exclusive as I originally thought.

VS typically has a run of 1,000-3,000 slip covers for their limited editions, the booklets don't appear as often, and I'm not sure how limited they are offhand. I got one in January with "Don't Answer The Phone," this month with "Psychos in Love." The Point of Terror and Bay of Blood Blu also from January did come with a limited DVD containing the TV edit of both movies.

I believe the German and the Italian are virtually identical - at least image-wise - with the Italian being much cheaper (only 15 Euros from Amazon.it - or 9 from one of their sellers, if they ship to your destination). I think the German one might have a slightly better mono soundtrack; I can't remember exactly.
