Tales of the Dying Earth is essential reading
https://www.amazon.com/Tales-Dying-Earth-Jack-Vance/dp/0312874561

It's a collection of all the Dying Earth stories, including the Cugel the Clever novellas which are absolute must-reads.

while we're on the subject of religion and sci-fi I should also point out that anyone who hasn't read A Canticle For Leibowitz is doing themselves a disservice

though it's also quite different from most of the sci-fi novels discussed here previously

It's ace, yes. Case of Conscience is worth a read, too.

I only ever read one Culture novel, Player of Games, and I can't remember anything about it apart from that one thing about how when you're in the middle of a game and it suddenly dawns on you that you're going to win. Always stuck with me, and if I'm winning an RTS game it always comes back to me.

and another thing: im not mad. please dont put in the newspaper that i got mad.
The best socialist fantasy/SF novel is Iron Council by China Mieville. You might want to read Perdido Street Station first for background on the world, but it's not strictly necessary.
