The tricky part as I understand it is the takeoff, as the airframe can handle quite a bit more stress than the layman would think; so once they were safely in the air, it was home free. That being said, I would be EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE inside this plane.

You can just fly through them, though I'm not sure if it requires a specially preped plane: https://twitter.com/NOAA_HurrHunter/status/905184657431506945 https://twitter.com/NOAA_HurrHunter/status/904707845228290048

The wiki for the plane says it's not modified to fly through hurricanes, but the decks are reinforced to hold the testing equipment.

Hurricanes have predictable lateral moving winds, so pilots can adjust to that. Thunderstorms have multiple pockets of air moving upwards and downwards randomly which leads to your plane suddenly dropping. I still wouldn't loving want to be on a plane in either situation though.

On flying and storms, can someone remind me of the name of this air phenomena that's like a fist of cold (I think) air that sort of punches down from the sky towards the ground. I'm trying to explain it to a coworker and can't remember the name. I swear I read about it in this thread. I'd just look it up but stuck using my phone and Google won't load.

I got to experience a microburst in Arizona my first year out there. It knocked over trees and was the weirdest thing. Not as scary as driving through a haboob or hiding from a tornado, but still pretty crazy.

Just hanging out on a normal day when suddenly: everything was on the move, really loving fast and then back to normal but now trees were down, power was out, signs and poles were knocked over. It was the craziest poo poo.
