Well, obviously. If we actually got rich people to pay more of a share and used that money to fix problems, the problems would go away, and then we wouldn't be able to be smugly superior about how we can't fix those problems and that wanting to fix those problems means people are naive children.

We can probably get by with some of those things, but essentially yeah that's what we need to do. The alternative is death, one way or another.

Your argument seems to be "humans can't do this, therefore any argument suggesting humans need to do this must be wrong" when in fact the conclusion you would be reaching if you could think rationally, is "the human race is doomed". And this may actually be the case, but it's not very helpful.

The walks are ratcheting up. The number one question is no longer "oh, there's an election?" We are now at "Which one is the Democrat?" 42 people came out to walk for the governor's race, and we're starting to work for Elizabeth Guzman in the House of Delegates race.

People are starting to wonder what the candidates stand for as well, and that's where it's fun to watch released staff learn. It's not enough to repeat 1-3 talking points that the home office in Richmond provides. You have to know what your guy is for. You read this thread, so you know that and I know that - you can't just say "the other guy is a shmuck, vote for me!" Teaching people how to use their own story to explain why their guy is their guy is everything. My job next week is to train / retrain everyone in the office to speak like a human and knock on doors like they're people, not just marching band teens with a script.

Side note: actually ran into marching band teens in Fairfax County yesterday. They were rehearsing their speech while walking to the next door. We had a laugh about it. Door knocking is hilarious and awesome. Democracy is awesome. Getting people to get down for a cause is awesome.

Last round of polling has Northam +6, and the Kochs responded with a $2 million ad buy. Northam apparently had a response to said ad buy ready to go, as VA Dems often do; they've even tactically positioned the response to run immediately after the Koch attack ads. It's kind of amazing.

Yes.

Right now it isn't much of an issue because our economy growing strong.

If debt grows at an unsustainable rate you either have to increase inflation by printing money or balance the budget at some point. The US relies on strong economic growth to make our past debt irrelevant. If growth slows long term there will be problems.

The thing is that organizations that buy debt take that probability into account. So if they start thinking it is likely that the US government will start printing money they'll want higher interest rates to offset the risk of inflation. The US is rolling debt forward in 10 year notes. So every 10 years we fully cycle through the $20T or so in debt we have. Right now we pay basically nothing in interest. If the market starts demanding higher rates we can quickly find ourselves in a position where our year budget gets blown up because we have to make much larger payments to service the debt. This can lead to a cycle of hyper inflation if the government just starts printing unlimited money.

This is a real risk. You can't simply print money to pay off the debt with out consequences.

The real question is how far from this are we? We're probably at least a a couple of decades out at the current rates. But all of this can change. If economic growth picks up then the time line gets longer. If the economy slows and the debt markets start worrying the timeline gets shorter. The US is a insulated from this because when the debt market gets worried they buy our bonds. During the Financial Crisis in 2008 the interest rate on treasuries was negative for a while. People were willing to fork over $100.1 million for a guarantee of getting $100 million in 10 years.

Edit:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_public_debt

Greece is roughly twice our ratio and are in a world of hurt. Japan is the next closest and has a "lost decade", a scenario of near 0 growth over an entire decade

It's also worth pointing out that there's also a risk of paying of the economy growing unexpectedly and the government paying off too much of its debt. T-Bills are a very important bedrock in the modern economy and not having enough on-hand to use as collateral can lead to problems like the 2008 crisis.

I did some door knocking for kathryn rehner here in MS for this last special election, but she got creamed by like 700 votes (1500 to 800) and there'll be a runoff. She's almost certain to lose but it was cool to get out there and meet so many people that at least said they were gonna vote for her.

A significant number of the doors I knocked on wound up being black people who supported rehner but couldn't vote because of past convictions. :sigh: not one white person said this to me. Thanks, totally-not-racist state of mississippi!

Last year was a bit of a bellwether for that up here. McAuliffe tried to restore rights to every felon who'd served their time and completed parole, and the state Supreme Court sided with the GOP saying he couldn't do that...but he could absolutely do it on a case by case basis. So the motherfucker sat down for a little while every day restoring people by hand, one by one. Two good friends got to vote because of that.

I'm hoping that Jim Hood (MS state AG, pretty darn progressive dem actually) runs for and wins the mississippi governorship in 2018. It would be such a big deal, because when he came to speak in my town he said his priorities would be things like immediately expanding medicaid, raising the minimum wage, etc on top of common sense things that are essentially apolitical but the GOP refuses to do because they're horrible shitheads. I don't know if he has a real chance but I liked him a lot and I will be happy to canvass for him when the time comes.
