man for a broken unplayable mess of a game I sure enjoy playing this not at all finished trainwreck and affront to all things good in this world try mods you nerds, redistricting alone has completely revamped the way I approach city design for the better and it requires minimal file editing to work just fine with the current version you too can have jewelers quarters giving bonuses to diamonds, jade, and silver

The game isn't good modded since the mods are so limited in scope. You can't really touch the AI, for example, just tinker with variables around the edges.

So no wonder it feels like the "game is bad" posters have a monopoly - there just aren't enough "game is good" posters out there

I think Civ 6 is about as good as BNW, but I did also decide to not play more than 5 or 6 games to completion before waiting for expansions to come out. I like the new systems for the most part, and I don't particularly mind bad AI. It's not like the AI in Civ 5 was ever good.

DeathChicken posted:Of course Civ 4 made up for that by doubling down on punishing you for daring to build wide instead of tall. Yay exorbitant maintenance costs as soon as you went over eight cities (which hilariously made Communism the best route for anyone to take since Communists were the only ones who didn't have to worry about it). You still want to build as wide as possible in early game (at least until you hit negative gold at like...10-20% science). There are ways to mitigate your economy being in the toilet (Overseas trade routes, careful tile management with Cottages + city placement to get a good money city, Scientist specialists that give you gold independent beakers, Courthouses and commerce buildings. Currency Tech. Wonders like Colossus, Great Lighthouse, Great Library etc) but there aren't really ways to force an advantage if you miss out on the early land grab because you're scared of a slightly hairy early game (unless you're a master of war). So basically if you're careful you can pretty much expand for the entire game and not have your economy implode, you just have to be slightly careful very early on and then you're golden. You don't have to wait until State Property.

Yeah, Civ 4 basically steps up the "maximum efficient number of cities" as you go through the game, though it's always a soft cap you can get around with enough money. Early on it's about four cities. Then you get courthouses and you can get a bit bigger. Later in the game things like markets, banks and grocers show up and you get bigger. Then with Communism the brakes come off entirely and you can conquer the world. It was much better than what Civ 5 came up with, which was originally "Build as many cities as possible from turn 1" and mutated into "Four cities is optimal throughout the game" as the expansions stacked up.

When the answer to the question of "How do I defend against early AI aggression" is "build a slinger" I think it's safe to assume there is zero strategic depth to the combat. I know Civ has always been about pushing units around but I would love to see the series abstract away combat somewhat and focus more on empire building and diplomacy. That or bring back Civ 2 combat complete with stackwipes, either way. Edit: Actually yea just bring back stackwipes and make offense the name of the game again.

Another thing I'd like to point out that shows off how lackadaisical Firaxis is with this game is accidental inclusion of the leader's nuclear weapon dialogues in this latest patch. To a non-programmer, it may seem logical that a mistake like that happens. They are working on something new, and a little bit of it accidentally slips into the release, but this is a problem that has been solved years ago by modern day programming. Every company that programs anything, except Firaxis I guess, uses repositories to save every version of every file they work on. Nearly every repository option allows some form of branching, which allows the programmers to do things like make a patch for the currently released version while another team works on new features. They can then release the patched version to the public without new features getting in the way, and they merge the patched version code with the new feature code internally so the new feature team can continue their feature work with the latest patched code. So either Firaxis isn't using any repository/version control, are using it wrong, or they released the wrong version to the public and decided just to leave it there for months instead of re-releasing the correct version. All of these are bad, and the game is never going to get better because of the practices of the current team.

Just need to have slightly better UI for managing and viewing endgame stacks. But for civ a fundamental important aspect of combat is that the combat occurs between two units and fully resolves in 1 turn with one of them dying.

My only gripe with 4 was the suicide catapults but otherwise yea it handled combat pretty well with lots of opportunities for unit counters and superior positioning. At least the AI can kill you (or each other) with stacks, I miss that most of all.

# ? Sep 17, 2017 22:01 |

Catapault stacks were fine, even necessary given the mechanics of stack combat. The cavalry flank attack was a clever addition, but the whole concept of collateral damage just needed a bit more refinement. 1upt is a huge step backward and makes no sense as a Civ concept.

If I'm working on a religious victory, I should use Missionaries to spread my religion and Apostles for only theological combat, correct? I ran into an issue on my Poland play through where I increased the cost of the Apostles so high early on that I couldn't effectively deal with Inquisitors. I'm a scrub and play on Prince so I figure I did something wrong with my unit utilization.

It depends - do you have the city state ally that lets you choose the Apostle promotions? If you do then you should be using those as they can take an ability that wipes out enemy religions in a city instantly. It's a very fast converstion rate and an easy win.
