Time to shove my eye full of needles. The turrets are so charming. I'm going to avoid...the thing...that turns me against them, even if I did see it coming a mile off.

Counterpoint: Turrets are useless and even when you spec into them they still die as soon as you are in another zone and you are cutting yourself off from all the coolest powers in exchange for basically a line of text in the ending cinematic.

The wheel of themes is dusted off. As per the rules, 2017's winner "Post Apocalypse Open World 3rd-person action game". Kratos, Mario and Master Chief, dressed in black robes, spin the wheel. A single dart, pearl and ivory with an obsidian needle, is flung from the shadows. It embeds itself, deeply, in the gun-metal grey triangle labeled "Giant Robots" as the spin slows to a crawl. "Good, Good."

Ya the PC release I got in a Square Mystery bag is basically the same PC release I had decades ago but is able to run on newer computers. The graphics look horrible on it. While I don't have a desire to play it again, I do think they should give it the same treatment since so many people loved it.

The intro swordfight and ballroom dance were both pretty impressive for a game CG in 1998. At least the location designs are cool.

FF VIII is basically is so much more Japanese than the other 3D final fantasies and I'm so glad they ditched so much of that baggage. Ok so you're in High School (buts it's fighting High School) and your rival is mean and your sexy teacher is whipping you and you occasionally pass out from the hidden anxiety of disappointing your dad... FFIX was a breath of fresh air, and I thought I perfectly paved the way for the colorful yet somber FFX.

I quite like all the 3D Final Fantasies from 7-10 and either beat them all or got 90% of the way there. FF12 started the long trend of Final Fantasies with dreadful combat systems though

I always wished FF7+8 let you get more people in a battle, since FF4 gave you 5 people to play with. FF9 at least added one, then FFX decided swapping was a weird middle step.
