numberoneposter posted:One thing I have noticed about some of the bad Voyager episodes is that they are usually not boring. Bad TNG and DS9 eps will put you to sleep. Heck even some of the good TNG episodes will put you to sleep. Voyager can't be boring, your brain is constantly rebelling against what is on screen as it makes no sense.

Voyager has enough good moments to make the rest of the dreary muck stand out as even worse.

Johnny Aztec posted:Voyager has enough good moments to make the rest of the dreary muck stand out as even worse. The problem is a lot of the good moments tend to happen, for lack of a better description, by accident through the actors trying to salvage them rather than by decent writing and direction. And they're generally still in service of a mediocre, cliche, or just plain crap episode anyway.

Brian Singer did a post-Voyager series pitch that listed the ship's sentient computer as a main character. I always thought that sounded neat.

we get boat we get go posted:More people ripping off Andromeda I see. I'd actually love to see an official trek show with the Andromeda plot. It's like 600 yeas in the future, the federation has crumbled despite at its height nearly uniting the galaxy in a peaceful utopia. One ship was some how frozen in time 500 years ago and is now exploring this lovely dark-age trek universe where everything's regressed and it's fractured warlords and slavers and petty conflict all the way down. Slowly but surely this captain re-forges a new federation from the ashes of the old. Basically andromeda done right and enterprise (building the federation) done right. Show earth as regressed to a terrible capitalist dictatorship full of poverty and corruption, Risa a horrible 60's cheap vegas casino controlled by organized crime, the few places that held onto their technology and quality of life, like Vulcan, have become paranoid xenophobic isolationists. Over the course of the show we see the federation, and most importantly, it's ideals of democracy and space-socialism and multi-multiculturalism rebuilt. I could use something inspiring from trek again, something that shows that a lovely decaying garbage world can actually get better.

A whole lot of authors were apparently really enamored with that episode and set their novel during the point that happened, or found an excuse to use it again. It was really confusing.
