correct, but that's not the issue i'm referring to. the issue i'm referring to is that if you're making your own model you can't use the slider tools provided with Skyrim to make a person look like a person, you have to glue it together from your own legos - and if you're using the sliders, you can't get the Realdoll experience that these people are going for.

People say bigger is better.

But for the first time in my life, I think I've gone too far.
That's what Racemenu or ECE are for. They add sliders for everything to the character creator, so you can go as weird as you want while still using slider-compatible meshes. They even let you move the individual vertices on the head mesh in-game. Monster Factory's Skyrim videos use these to wonderful effect.

Real-talk, as a person who draws things, proportions are hard, and the proportion of the skull to the rest of the body is just the worst loving thing. A quarter-inch too large, and congrats, you have a freakish giant toddler or weird cartoon person, a quarter-inch too small and now they're a seven foot tall weird statue person. People tend to go with heads that are WAY too small because if you're going to gently caress it up one way or the other then at least that gives you the illusion of height and accentuated proportions (...on their sad digital waifus that are usually five-foot-nothing tall). That and the weird skinny necks that seem to be so common would look even worse contrasted with an appropriately-sized dome. It's weird and not-good, but it at least makes organic sense how they ended up there.

Nice try, Jim Lee. Tell us how hard feet are now. :colbert:

This stuff was fun to watch.

In suggested videos I got a guy talking about a few mods, Fallout 4 New Vegas, Fallout 4 Capitol Wasteland and Fallout 4 Miami.

Fallout Miami has the Patriots, the GOOD faction who is against slavery, that has to be said for reasons I'm sure are unrelated to the rebel flag surfboard that is featured. And two other factions... the Dreamers and Cuban immigrantsgangsters.

Midnight Animal was going to be an unofficial sequel mod set in a rebuilt-ish USA under 50 Blessings' control, and you'd be playing one of their top operatives. It got on Steam Greenlight and Dennaton liked it enough to give the maker their source code. Then at some point last year or earlier this year, I can't tell, the creator changed the entire style and setting into a blatant Persona rip-off. And by blatant I mean masks are now Personas and there's a lot of traced art. The fanbase has schismed into people outraged that the mod they had been supporting and interested in had effectively disappeared with no warning or good reason, and people who are somehow okay with all of this and are willing to accept anything as long as they get the ultraviolence. The modder is unsuprisingly a prima donna, saying something about how breaking up with his girlfriend shifted his muse or whatever and banning critics.

The dude's changing the story of his game to one he finds more interesting and telling people who don't like the changes to piss off. Sounds reasonable to me.

As for the traced art--well, let's see if that's placeholder art, or if it's remaining at launch.

EE:

quote:

For the purposes of this project, I will use the term ‘game’ to refer to any sort of interactive media where extensive and conscious effort must be exercised in order to arrive at some kind of intended meaning or experience. Under this definition, games are a highly unique and idiosyncratic ergodic medium, encompassing a wide breadth of activities.

The primary gameplay of Exegesis involves the nontrivial traversal of textual narratives. A key component in this is intertextuality; both diegetic and extradiegetic. Keeping track of trends, narratives, references and intertext is essential to successfully navigating the gameplay of Exegesis. Failure to engage with the game as an intertextual ergodic work is equivalent to failure to ‘complete’ the game’s primary objective.

The primary intended audience of Exegesis is strictly non-commercial, and non-artistic. It is not designed to be consumed for entertainment or artistic appreciation, and makes no attempts to satisfy either. It will not be sold, or distributed via commercial platforms. As previously mentioned, it is publicly intended as a working demonstration of a cluster of academic possibilities I’m interested in opening up discussions about; and privately, as a personal auto-psychobiography of sorts, through which I can carry out a comprehensive and intensive self-analysis of my psychic state over a period of several years. If it manages to fulfill one or the other upon completion, then I consider the project to be a success.

Exactly, Bethesda picks those authors they want to hire, essentially. Those authors are well on their way to an actual game development job.

Prices will come down in due time.

I mean, first impressions are pretty drat important. The response to "It's too expensive" being "prices will come down eventually" isn't... going to do anything good for the service, Enai.

"EnaiSiaion posted:

Yep, being in the Creation Club is the endgame for any serious modder, and it is time that the community accepts it instead of flailing around and calling Bethesda names.

That's what happens when less than 0.05% of users actually donates and the average donation is $2.6.

The market has spoken; non-CC mods evidently have close to no value. Talented authors would have to be insane to keep investing thousands of hours into a product that has no value. It is far better to focus on building a portfolio and getting into the Creation Club, which is the only place where mods have actual value.

lollllll yeah okay

I think your first mistake was trying to make modding into a paying job. Maybe some people like modding games? Maybe people agree the poo poo on the CC isn't worth the money? Maybe people aren't just flailing and calling Beth names, maybe they have legitimate gripes against the setup?

I've gotten one donation in my life, dude, and I'm totally fine with that because I am modding for a video game and not under the delusion that this is a paying job or a reliable stepladder into a career. Sure, modders get hired, but it's not like a guaranteed deal.

Also, what's with people who lose the ability to think as consumers when a potential job benefits them personally? As a consumer, I can't justify buying any of this crap. It's nice that the modders are apparently being treated well, but that is not what I am buying here.

aniviron
Sep 11, 2014

That's what I've said from the start, and obviously that guy realizes it but isn't admitting it to himself: Modding is not and should not be a job. If you want a job making video games, then... that job already exists, in many forms. Go join a studio or start your own indie outfit. If you want to be paid to make video games, that is how you do that. The whole point of modding is that it's a labor of love, something you do because you don't want the process to be a job.
