In the original Japanese game, dekameron would've been written in Katakana, which the translator would've recognized as signifying that the name was a foreign term written in Japanese letters, and not the Japanese word mega melon. So the British translator did it as a joke, and probably as an insult to the Portuguese, as all British people are racist.
