Podvoisky is probably the low point of the Soviet destroyer line, everything after it is pretty good with a slight hiccup at Minsk. The friendliest lines are US destroyers, Japanese cruisers, French cruisers, and German battleships. On the other hand, if you're not having fun, you might as well stop. It's only a video game.

If you're not liking how fragile you seem at tier 6, then I also have to recommend you stop now, because that's not going to improve at higher tiers. It's one of the genuine problems with the game. Based on what you're describing, you're looking for a ship that can take a hit, do some moves, and guns are kind of a close third in consideration. There's a couple of premiums that instantly leap to mind, but I'm not going to recommend you spend money on a game that you're not sure you even want to keep playing. So the best one in my mind that fits those criteria is the tier 7 German battleship, the Gneisenau. That thing has thick side armor and can go faster than some of the cruisers at that tier. The guns are typical battleship, but it comes with torpedoes, so it's in a weird position. Also, if you don't like things at the higher tiers, remember: you don't have to keep climbing. I'm probably not going to ever have a stable of tier 10s, I don't like the gameplay. I'm perfectly content to futz around at tiers 5-8.

I'd say that Gnevny is a lower point than Podvoisky. Compared to Podvoisky, Gnevny loses a main gun, 4 knots of top speed and gains a bit over a second of rudder shift time. Also there is no shame in using Operations for a bit of a boost in particularly bad T6 ships. The XP is much better than co-op although not as good as PvP.

The Nürnberg is infamously fragile though and one of the most unforgiving ships in the entire game, so you did choose the right thing to complain about. In general at tiers 5 and 6 cruisers start becoming harder to play because battleships start getting actually accurate enough to hit you. The key thing you need to survive as a cruiser (and as any other ship as well, actually) isn't map knowledge or detailed mechanics knowledge or anything like that, it's mainly about situational awareness. You need to know when you can be shot at and from what angles. I wrote some quick tips a little while ago that may or may not help.

The Yamato's fore citadel bulkhead isn't a flat wall athwartships like almost everything else; instead it's more like half of a hexagon. ASCII art: \_/ So, if you see a Yamato angled like 30 degrees, just shoot under the front turret and you're quite likely to citadel him, at least at short ranges. What makes the Yamato better at bow tanking than other T10 BB's is that it can overmatch other BB bows but they can't overmatch the Yamato's, once again proving that despite all the complex ballistic modeling the game has, what's by far the most important is simply your caliber vs a magic plate thickness number WG arbitrarily chose for certain unarmored ship sections.

I watched a bunch of Flamu's videos at work today and god drat does his skill impress and terrify me. I'm extremely jealous of how well he did in a Cleveland (which I am very bad at and do not enjoy.) Does his tier X cruiser review still hold up? It's two months old, but it pretty much confirms my choice of IJN, makes me want to grind through the Cleveland and I kinda want to pick up the german line :/
