Is there a listing of which Apple TV apps support 4K? I’m particularly interest in YouTube, Hulu and Netflix

Is this something that can be fixed or am I looking at a generational mismatch or something?

I have a 7 year old Sony lcd and it will only power on, and 35% of the time will power off. Volume is IR only. HDMI Cec sounds like a huge clusterfuck even today and there is no guarantee anything will actually work.

Any other Sling TV subs here? I ask because I want to verify that the app is complete dog poo poo for everyone else and not just me. It works fantastic on my FireTV sticks in every other room, but on my main TV with the ATV it's just constant crashes and hangups.
If your model has the silver remote with a click wheel it will be called “Apple TV (3rd gen)” and no the new remote won’t work with it (plus the new remote costs $79).
Apple dropped the price of the new remote to $59 now, that was nice.

I just discovered that in TVOS 11, the Computers app doesn’t respect the iTunes sort tags. Now I have a huge number of shows sorted into “T” for “The."

HDMI Cec sounds like a huge clusterfuck even today and there is no guarantee anything will actually work. I have a two year old Bravia, and it worked perfectly until it was updated to Marshmallow. That broke some (but not all) of the CEC functionality. It still auto changes inputs and on/off. If I'm using ARC to my sound system, it no longer passes volume control (which is used to). This is when using the Apple TV remote. If use the Bravia remote, same issue. Won't pass volume changes via ARC (but does power on/off the amplifier). I just ended up switching everything back the way it was (Apple TV into Dennon, HDMI out of Dennon into TV) and use my Harmony Hub Activities to control everything.

Do people keep their home button going to the "TV" app in TVOS11 or revert back to the original home screen? I am going to revert back, it is kind of annoying and the tv app seems kind of limited. Usually I just go between plex and Netflix anyway.

I just reverted behavior back when the TV app first dropped. It kept my pref when I did the update, but I would have still changed it back if they overrode that.

It's been like it for a while, but I reverted. I use the TV app for a few things, but as it can't deal with Plex it's a bit of a dud for me. The 'pressing menu in a video stream and going back to the home menu, not the app' bug still annoys although I've not seen it in 11 yet. Hope it's gone.

Ah it's new to me with the Tv app since that just dropped for Canada with TVOS11, didn't realize it was based off the app and not the os update. I want to like the tv app but without support of plex and more channels signed on it is useless, and I suspect it'll always be that way. No way plex gets supported and tv channels apps are such pieces of crap anyway usually.

There's some irony in that the apps it tends to work with are the ones I quite like using. Proteus Jones posted:Nope. Got kicked out of the PSVue app a couple times. Damnit.

Home button goes home, but probably 80% of my AppleTV use is to stream music through the stereo so a dedicated TV button is near useless to me.

It's especially strange that the TV app wasn't even on the AT until like 7 months ago. Before that it was only a dedicated home button, but still had the TV icon on the remote.

I like the TV app, but I have the button just take me to the actual home screen. Most of my use of the TV app comes from keeping it in the dock and launching shows directly from there, I usually only open it to reload if it hangs.

This is not great advice, to be honest [and it was written before there was much 4k hardware out in the wild]. You should absolutely try the cables you have but for 4k/HDR you pretty much need an 18gbps cable. The way they're marketed and sold is ridiculous and I guarantee you there were a bunch marked "high speed" in like 2009 that aren't capable of modern resolutions. People are legit having problems with the wrong cables with 4K/HDR. e: there's a guy in my building who orders everything on amazon and he went on vacation for like 2 weeks once and there was a giant pile of packages sitting in our lobby and I almost stole some of them just on principle, like don't make your neighbors babysit your crap qirex fucked around with this message at 16:17 on Sep 25, 2017 |

Yep, I connected my 4K with an older cable, and it wouldn't work with 4:4:4 chroma. I ordered a new cable since I have no idea what all else I have, and now it works.

dexter6 posted:I'm using a really old cable. Is there a test I can run to make sure it has enough bandwidth? There's literally a "Check Cable" function in the video options. Alternatively, make whatever changes you want, and if it works, great! If not, it'll revert after 20 seconds.

So it sounds to me like this thing is not worth a purchase at this time with the lack of display switching, fake HDR10 on DV movies, and the lack of Atmos. Apple did say Atmos was on the roadmap, but hopefully they fix these other glaring issues rather soon.

IMO Atmos is mostly useless unless you have a literal dedicated theater room, in a normal living space with furniture and windows and stuff you'll never get the kind of positional accuracy it was designed for. Invest in better main speakers.
